Reading involves decoding and comprehension components, and to become efficient it requires a large number of cognitive and linguistic processes. Among those, decoding failures can have different origins, such as deficits in phonological and/or visual processing. In addition, a child with reading difficulties might also have problems in the acquisition of writing and handwriting performance. This is an important point to be discussed, as reading and writing both suffer interference from vocabulary acquisition, linguistic skills, memory skills, reading and writing practices, and literacy methods. These processes become important only when the professional needs to deal with students presenting learning difficulties. Difficulty in using the knowledge of conversion rules between grapheme-phoneme to word reading construction or phoneme-grapheme for writing can be identified in schoolchildren with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dysortography, being a specific learning disorder with a neurological etiology. In addition, there is established evidence of a speech-language processing basis, students with specific learning disabilities can show a range of cognitive difficulties (e.g., rapid naming, executive functioning, working memory). These presented difficulties interfere in their learning process, impairing their learning development.

Although accountability systems have evolved to reflect less prescriptive measures, schools and districts are still accountable annually to state-level measures of student achievement and growth. Assessing student progress before end-of-year tests has become increasingly important, and interim assessments have become a valuable tool to help predict and gauge student learning. This quantitative correlational research study analyzed the statistical relationship between the English Language Arts Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) and the Curriculum Associates' (CA) Reading i-Ready Diagnostic assessment (i-Ready) for students in grades sixth - eighth. A Pearson correlation test was used to determine if there was a statistical correlation between the two testing instruments during the years of 2017, 2018, and 2019. The results showed differing levels of statistical correlation between the two tests, depending on the grade level and year. Based on the findings, the use of formative assessments tools like i-Ready could assist schools in identifying supports for teaching and learning before annual testing.

Book excerpt: This study examined the predictive validity and accuracy of using teacher judgment with curriculum-based measurement as a part of screening for at-risk readers. The participants included native English speakers and English language learners in third and fifth grade. Results from the predictive validity analyses indicated that after controlling for prior year's test performance and curriculum-based measurement (e.g.: R-CBM and Maze), teacher judgment contributed unique variance in predicting future reading performance. Results from the predictive accuracy analyses indicated that established cut-scores for curriculum-based measures yielded relatively lower sensitivity and higher specificity. Regarding the effect of student variables, it was found that English language proficiency and level of reading achievement moderated the contribution of teacher judgment in predicting future reading performance. However, teachers were not found to be a source of variability in the accuracy of their judgments.
