Book excerpt: There is a need for performance characterisation indices and performance-based specifications of unbound materials. In addition, there is a need to address issues associated with the non-uniformity of current empirical specifications adopted by different AUSTROADS Member Authorities, with a view to developing more uniform national performance-based specifications using a framework based on mechanistic design procedures. Repeat load triaxial (RLT) testing equipment and test procedures have been developed and evaluated in NSRP Project N&T 9529 - Stage 1) and current specifications for standard unbound materials (Project T&E P133) are being reviewed. The objective of the NSRP Project N.T.&E 9906 during 1999/2000 is to establish a framework for incorporating the RLT test method into performance-based specifications and pavement design of unbound pavement materials. This report describes the interim AUSTROADS test protocols for the determination of permanent deformation and resilient modulus characteristics of unbound pavement materials under drained conditions, which can be used for the purposes of material specifications and pavement design.

Book excerpt: "Unbound Granular Materials (UGMs) are used in the base/subbase layers of flexible pavements for the majority of roads around the world. The deterioration of pavements increases with the increase of traffic loadings. To ensure the long-term performance and serviceability of pavement structures through a realistic design, the precise evaluation and comprehensive characterisation of the resilient and permanent deformation behaviour of pavement materials are essential. The present PhD study aims to investigate the characterisation of the resilient and permanent deformation behaviour of four road base UGMs sourced from quarries in Victoria, Australia, using Repeated Load Triaxial (RLT) testing. The triaxial system used in this study is instrumented with four axial deformation measurement transducers to achieve highly precise measurements and to evaluate the effect of instrumentation on the resilient modulus of UGMs. The resilient Poisson's ratio of the studied UGMs is also determined using a radial Hall-Effect transducer. Moreover, a series of permanent deformation tests is performed to precisely characterise the axial and radial permanent deformation behaviour of UGMs and investigate the factors that may significantly influence the accumulated axial and radial permanent deformations. Finally, three permanent deformation models incorporated with a time-hardening procedure are employed to predict the magnitude of permanent strain for multiple stress levels of the RLT test. The predictions using the employed models are then compared against the measured values to evaluate the suitability of the models and to identify the model that best predicts the strain accumulation behaviour of the tested UGMs. While this study focuses on the resilient and permanent deformation behaviour of four Victorian UGMs under repeated loading, the knowledge generated from this comprehensive investigation will contribute towards the global development of more reliable methods for evaluating the long-term performance of pavement structures and minimising road maintenance and repair costs." -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: Summary: "Over the last decade a considerable amount of research effort has been focussed on the development of a repeated load triaxial (RLT) test procedure to assist practitioners in the use of natural and marginal unbound base/subbase materials in road pavements. A significant hindrance to the widespread adoption of the RLT test has been the lack of data linking the results of the laboratory test to field performance. In order to address this issue, Austroads established a research project, titled ʻBetter Basis for Bases: Optimum Use of Granular Materialsʼ. A major component of this research project entails the loading of test pavements with the Accelerated Loading Facility. This report details the construction of the test pavements.

The test is intended to simulate the stress conditions that occur in the base and subgrade of a pavement system. Resilient modulus has been adopted by the U.S. federal highway administration as the primary performance parameter for pavement design. We thank those who prepared these papers, the reviewers who provided anonymous peer reviews, and those who participated in the symposium. We hope this STP encourages more work to improve the testing standard and the value of the Resilient Modulus test."

Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 433: Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing documents and summarizes significant findings from the various experimental activities associated with full-scale accelerated pavement testing (f-sAPT) programs that have taken place between 2000 and 2011. The report also identifies gaps in knowledge related to f-sAPT and where future research may be needed. NCHRP Synthesis 433 is designed to expand the f-sAPT base of knowledge documented in NCHRP Syntheses 325 and 235, both with the same title of Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing. f-sAPT is the controlled application of a wheel loading, at or above the appropriate legal load limit, to a pavement system to determine pavement response in a compressed time period. The acceleration of damage is achieved by one or more of the following factors: increased repetitions, modified loading conditions, imposed climatic conditions, and thinner pavements with a decreased structural capacity which have shorter design lives"--

Committee on Strength and Deformation Characteristics of Pavement Sections and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1975 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Procedures are described for determining the dynamic modulus of elasticity by the following tests: repeated load triaxial test, complex modulus test, flexural bending test, indirect tensile test, and resonant column method. A simplified, approximate test procedure is given for determining the dynamic modulus for cohesive soils. The laboratory testing procedure, sample preparation and type of equipment for performance of the tests are described. Some of the problems involved in the dynamic testing of highway materials are defined, and procedures which minimize those problems are suggested. Data which have significant effect on pavement performance are considered. These data relate to stress pulse, dynamic moduli, Poisson's ratio, and the type of material. Specimen preparation and compaction processes for compacted cohesive specimens, compacted granular specimens, and compacted asphalt concrete beam specimens are detailed. Also described is the resilience testing of unstabilized soil which will define the resilient characteristics of untreated granular and cohesive soils for conditions that represent a reasonable simulation of in situ state of stress in pavements subjected to moving wheel loads.
