Over half of all higher education institutions offer online classes, due in part to the ease of offering and scheduling (Hoffman, 2006); educators seek ways to identify any demographic or academic characteristics that lead to success (Jaggars & Bailey, 2010). With the growth and popularity of online learning, postsecondary institutions must continue to develop best practices in the areas of online teaching pedagogies to promote student success. Within community colleges there is a growing acceptance of online courses and given that over 60% of incoming students test into developmental math coursework (Chen, 2016), answers must be sought to assist these developmental math learners toward online success. This study investigated the role of various student characteristics concerning student success in online developmental math course completion. The sample was students enrolled in a specific identified gateway mathematic course offered fully online in at a large suburban, public community college located in the northeastern part of the United States. Utilizing a mixed methods explanatory sequential design, explored course completion rates of developmental students enrolled in online college-level mathematics courses, the study analyzed the role of demographic and academic characteristics for developmental students enrolled in a college-level mathematics course offered fully online from the fall 2017 through fall 2019 academic year. A second phase of semi-structured interviews was conducted to explore aspects of student success from individuals identified in the first phase. As the success of developmental college students is at the forefront of postsecondary institutions in their mission for student success online, the ability to identify characteristics that could lead to student success may assist in recommendations for online instructors and assessment of developmental math student college-level mathematics course completion.

Book excerpt: The number of students entering the community college in need of developmental math has not changed, remaining at a steady 60% over the past seven years. This study compared the success rate of Mandatory Supplemental Instruction (MSI) sessions within four sections of a developmental math course compared with the success rates of students enrolled in both the Traditional Classroom setting and the Individualized format at Suburban Community College (SCC) during the Fall 2009 semester. These MSI format courses were compared with both the Individualized format of MAT 060 and the Traditional Classroom format of the same course. The students included in these sections were a combination of students who were: 1) suggested by advisors to enroll in this developmental math course after receiving a low score on the college's Accuplacer placement test for algebra or continuing the progression of developmental math from the lower level arithmetic class; 2) mandated to attend MSI after successful completion of the Jump Start Math Program, or 3) self-selected into the MSI group anticipating the need for additional help in the course. The two primary data sets available for this study are student math final grades and student participation/attendance records. Secondary sets of data include informal focus group notes, final exam scores, student attendance records for both class lectures and MSI sessions, and Supplemental Instruction Leader anecdotal records. The findings of this study conclude that success rates of students enrolled in the MSI sections of developmental math do not differ significantly from those enrolled in the Traditional Classroom format of developmental math; however, both groups did differ significantly from the Individualized format of developmental math, in that the students enrolled in the Individualized format succeeded at a lesser rate and withdrew at a greater rate than their MSI or Traditional Classroom counterparts. This study also concluded that female, full-time students succeeded at a greater rate across the board, which is consistent with the literature. These findings were significant for a number of reasons. Although the difference between the treatment group and the Traditional Classroom group was not significant, there are a variety of reasons at the program level as to why this may have been so and there are many future constructs that SCC can put in place to strengthen and reassess the MSI program. Although this study was focused on the MSI treatment, the data revealed a greater issue existing in the Individualized format of developmental math at SCC. Future considerations can be made in this particular delivery method to improve success rates of students involved in this program. Future research on MSI in the form of persistence and retention rates, graduation rates, transfer rates, subsequent math course grades and success in other college-level classes can be explored to provide the MSI program with more data to determine if particular groups of students are benefiting from this format.

The data is a census of all UTSA students enrolled between Fall 2007 and Fall 2012. Students (Dev-1) whose first-passed, developmental mathematics course was MAT 0203 were compared with students (Dev-2) whose first-passed developmental mathematics course was MAT 0213 on persistence and success in their first college-level mathematics course. Dev-1 students had passing rates nearly as high as Dev-2 students who also persisted and completed a college-level course. The groups differed in their persistence rates, with Dev-2 students much more likely to complete a college-level mathematics course. Results also showed that regardless of group, students who delay taking their first college-level mathematics course more than two semesters after passing their last developmental mathematics course were somewhat less likely to pass that college-level course.

They are also considerably more likely to drop out of college without obtaining a degree. However, many students need developmental math if they are going to succeed in their college level math courses. As a result, it is vitally important to both students and educators concerned with student success that students are placed into the correct courses. Little, if any, work has done been in this area for online math courses despite the explosive growth of online college level education in the last two decades. The present study measures the accuracy with which a multiple measures placement process using ACT/SAT mathematics score, a local algebra skills assessment, and unweighted high school GPA predicts final course grades for students in an online developmental math course. A quantitative correlation design was used for the study. The research used archival data from a private university located in the eastern United States with a very large online student population. Data for all three predictive variables as well as course grades for a developmental math course was retrieved from the university record system for 3843 students enrolled between Fall 2016 and Spring 2019. Multiple linear regression analysis showed no significant predictive relationship with respect to the criterion variable. Additional analysis revealed significant correlations between the online developmental math final grades and both high school GPA and the local algebra skills test. The study concludes with recommendations for further research including studying differences by age of student and using data from other universities.

Book excerpt: Education is a major focal point of individual justice within a free society as well as a central point of human capital for the world. This study compared the cognitive and personal developmental levels of community college students enrolled in developmental-level mathematics courses to students enrolled in college-level mathematics courses. In addition, the effects of age, as well as a variety of demographic differences such as parents’ education, financial aid, and gender on the development of community college students were investigated. The levels of development were based on the following scales: competency, autonomy, identity, and intellectual development. The sources of these scales were Arthur Chickering’s theory on college students’ development and William Perry’s theory of cognitive development. In establishing this causal-comparative design, the independent variables were mathematics level (developmental-level mathematics students versus college-level mathematics students), with a further distinction between age groups (traditional-aged versus adult students). Comparisons among means on the instruments and the various subscales were tested using independent sample t-tests and a series of analysis of variance tests. With this design and combination of variables, three basic null hypotheses were tested: a) There were no significant differences between mean scores on the four inventories of developmental mathematics students versus college-level mathematics students; b) There were no significant differences between mean scores on the four inventories of traditional-aged versus adult community college students; and c) There were no significant differences between additional independent variables tested such as gender, marital status, family background, and method of financing education. Significant differences were found on the following scales and subscales: mobility based on age; identity based on mathematics level; mobility, identity, and intellectual development based on gender; interdependence based on marital status; and competency in mathematics based on employment patterns. The results of this study can be used to recommend appropriate changes in classrooms, instruction, and student services.
