Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Precursors of Jacques Cartier, 1497-1534: A Collection of Documents Relating to the Early History of the Dominion of Canada The European explorer who at the close of the fifteenth century1 first sighted that portion of North America subse quently called Canada was Giovanni Caboto, of Genoa2. Of Cabot's early life nothing is known. We hear of him first in 1461 when he removed from Genoa and took up his residence in Venice, probably on account of the numerous factorie maintained by that republic throughout the Levant. On one of his trading voyages to the eastern Mediterranean, Cabot, who in 1476 was naturalized a Venetian citizen,8 made his war via Alexandria and the Red Sea to, as he asserts, Mecca, which city was then the greatest mart in the world for the exchange of the goods of the west for those of the east. On inquirv whence came the spices, perfumes, silks and precious stone. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was prepared in an attempt to clarify seemingly contradictory interpretations of the early history of the discovery of North America, as well as to survey the early historical sources which may contribute to an ethno-historical study of the Indians of those coasts first explored. A major part of the book is devoted to a re-analysis of the cartographical materials and to an attempt to present a more logical interpretation of this material. In the course of this attempt the work discusses and rejects previously widely held viewpoints concerning the early exploration of North America and the development of North American cartography. A new hypothesis is presented in this respect and is shown to fit the available evidence more adequately. The study also reconsiders the documentary materials deriving from the Cartier voyages and develops new conclusions concerning their origin, particularly with respect to the so-called "Cartier vocabularies." This is a pioneer summary and original analysis based upon exhaustive research, and is the most comprehensive collation available to scholars; in combination with the recent map bibliography published by the Public Archives, it will be of great aid to research students. Dr. Hoffman's hypotheses are brilliantly presented and highly stimulating. The line-cut illustrations and listing of nomenclature are most valuable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natives and Newcomers discredits that myth. In a spirited and critical re-examination of relations between the French and the Iroquoian-speaking inhabitants of the St Lawrence lowlands, from the incursions of Jacques Cartier through the explorations of Samuel de Champlain and the Jesuit missions into the early years of the royal regime, Natives and Newcomers argues that native people have played a significant role in shaping the development of Canada. Trigger also shows that the largely ignored French traders and their employees established relations with native people that were indispensable for founding a viable European colony on the St Lawrence. The brisk narrative of this period is complemented by a detailed survey of the stereotypes about native people that have influenced the development of Canadian history and anthropology and by candid discussions of how historical, ethnographical, and archaeological approaches can and cannot be combined to produce a more rounded and accurate understanding of the past.
