Dr. Blake R. Heffner Rejoice in the spiritual blessings of God! I was silenced, in shock, as we descended those stairs; my pastor quietly quoted our Lord Jesus, ?Whatever you did for one of the least of these ?you do for me? (Matt. 25:40). I stopped in my tracks?looked back up at that apartment?I saw Jesus sitting next to Phoebe with His arm around her. That day changed my life! That verse from our Lord is at the core of who I am today and what I have believed every day for the past thirty-five years as a Christian; so shall it always be. Jesus has been right by my side, giving me His words. How blessed we are to have living words from Him!? This faith discussion is a collection of reflections, sermons and meditations we will share as we journey together exploring the spiritual blessings of our faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A SCIENTIST ANALYZES THE BIBLE IN SEARCH OF GOD’S ABSOLUTE TRUTH. The whole concept of the Bible might be summed up in four words, “Do good, resist evil.” But how do we do this? The Bible’s Hidden Treasure highlights the importance of one of the Bible’s more unappreciated works: the Book of James. The author finds the book to be like a hidden treasure or a precious pearl, as described in the parable told by Jesus in Matthew, 13:44-46. In this book, get the answers to questions such as: Does God change with time? Which of the Ten Commandments is the least important? What is God-given wisdom and how do you get this wisdom? Are you saved by faith alone? What should you pray for? The book also examines how to resist temptation, the importance of patience and perseverance, what deeds are most important, and what you must do to help yourself and others move closer to the Lord. Find heavenly wisdom and get guidance to find salvation with the lessons and insights in The Bible’s Hidden Treasure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pearl of Greatest Price narrates the history of Mormonism's fourth volume of scripture, canonized in 1880. The authors track its predecessors, describe its several components, and assess their theological significance within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Four principal sections are discussed, along with attendant controversies associated with each. The Book of Moses purports to be a Mosaic narrative missing from the biblical version of Genesis. Too little treated in the scholarship on Mormonism, these chapters, produced only months after the Book of Mormon was published, actually contain the theological nucleus of Latter-day Saint doctrines as well as a virtual template for the Restoration Joseph Smith was to effect. In The Pearl of Greatest Price, the author covers three principal parts that are the focus of many of the controversies engulfing Mormonism today. These parts are The Book of Abraham, The Book of Moses, and The Joseph Smith History. Most controversial of all is the Book of Abraham, a production that arose out of a group of papyri Smith acquired, along with four mummies, in 1835. Most of the papyri disappeared in the great Chicago Fire, but surviving fragments have been identified as Egyptian funerary documents. This has created one of the most serious challenges to Smith's prophetic claims the LDS church has faced. LDS scholars, however, have developed several frameworks for vindicating the inspiration of the resulting narrative and Smith's calling as a prophet. The author attempts to make sense of Smith's several, at times divergent, accounts of his First Vision, one of which is canonized as scripture. He also assesses the creedal nature of Smith's "Articles of Faith," in the context of his professed anti-creedalism. In sum, this study chronicles the volume's historical legacy and theological indispensability to the Latter-day Saint tradition, as well as the reasons for its resilience and future prospects in the face of daunting challenges.

Book excerpt: You are His treasure and He is making you His precious jewel. In this thirty-one-day devotional you will find precious gems of Gods Word, which will transform hopelessness into hope. It is during hopeless situations in life that our faith is truly tested. As you meditate on the daily devotions, you will discover that your hope is the treasure in which faith stands. Put your hope in the almighty King. In Him all the treasures are stored up as you bask in His presence. Know that you are: a daughter of royalty, a precious jewel of beauty, and a diamond to destiny. May you sparkle with a radiant fire that exudes and touches other diamonds in the rough. Be encouraged and know that you are unique, gifted, and created for purpose. The true diamond within will break forth in brilliance. And they shall be Mine, says the LORD of hosts, in that day when I publicly recognize and openly declare them to be My jewels (My special possession, My peculiar treasure). And I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him (Mal. 3:17).

Book excerpt: Amen, I Say to You includes homilies for Cycles A, B, and C of the liturgical year, and a homily for each Holy Day of Obligation within the Roman Catholic Church. Each homily consist of three main points with supporting examples and illustrations. These are homilies I have preached, and they have been constructed with attention to verbal presentation. Another homilist easily should be able to substitute or include examples from his or her own pastoral or lived experience within the conceptual structure each homily provides. These homilies are not essays; they include no long, convoluted, hard to understand sentences. I try for simplicity of words and sentences, for concrete language everyone can understand. Feedback from posting some of the homilies on the internet has characterized the homilies as well planned, with ideas placed in a logical and precise order. They have been called simple, personal, and practical; very inspired and insightful; containing deep reflection and authentic Christian faith; and illustrative, applied and down to earth practical.

Book excerpt: War is uncomfortable for Christians, and worldwide war is unfamiliar for today’s generations. Jim Downing reflects on his illustrious military career, including his experience during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, to show how we can be people of faith during troubled times. The natural human impulse is to run from attack. Jim Downing—along with countless other soldiers and sailors at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941—ran toward it, fighting to rescue his fellow navy men, to protect loved ones and civilians on the island, and to find the redemptive path forward from a devastating war. We are protected from war these days, but there was a time when war was very present in our lives, and in The Other Side of Infamy we learn from a veteran of Pearl Harbor and World War II what it means to follow Jesus into and through every danger, toil, and snare.
