Download or read book Agrarian Modernisation in Honduras written by Andy Thorpe and published by Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The agricultural sector is often both the main source of employment and the major contributor of foreign exchange in many developing countries. Furthermore, poverty levels are markedly higher in rural as opposed to urban areas. As a consequence, agriculture and agrarian policy will play a decisive role in shaping not only the country's economic future, but also the material welfare of a majority of inhabitants. cont. on the next page. Thorpe is therfore to be congratulated in providing us with this detailed study of the agricultural sector in Honduras. The country may be small and poor, but the issues that this study raises are relevant to many other developing countries that are currently engaged in implementing neo-liberal economic policies and sectoral adjustment programmes.
Book Synopsis The Legacies of Liberalism by : James Mahoney
Download or read book The Legacies of Liberalism written by James Mahoney and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Barrington Moore Jr. Prize for the Best Book in Comparative and Historical Sociology from the American Sociological AssociationWinner of the Best Book Award in the Comparative Democratization Section from the American Political Science Association Despite their many similarities, Central American countries during the twentieth century were characterized by remarkably different political regimes. In a comparative analysis of Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua, James Mahoney argues that these political differences were legacies of the nineteenth-century liberal reform period. Presenting a theory of "path dependence," Mahoney shows how choices made at crucial turning points in Central American history established certain directions of change and foreclosed others to shape long-term development. By the middle of the twentieth century, three types of political regimes characterized the five nations considered in this study: military-authoritarian (Guatemala, El Salvador), liberal democratic (Costa Rica), and traditional dictatorial (Honduras, Nicaragua). As Mahoney shows, each type is the end point of choices regarding state and agrarian development made by these countries early in the nineteenth century. Applying his conclusions to present-day attempts at market creation in a neoliberal era, Mahoney warns that overzealous pursuit of market creation can have severely negative long-term political consequences. The Legacies of Liberalism presents new insight into the role of leadership in political development, the place of domestic politics in the analysis of foreign intervention, and the role of the state in the creation of early capitalism. The book offers a general theoretical framework that will be of broad interest to scholars of comparative politics and political development, and its overall argument will stir debate among historians of particular Central American countries.

Book Synopsis The Banana Men by : Lester D. Langley
Download or read book The Banana Men written by Lester D. Langley and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An engaging and fascinating narrative of the entrepreneurs and mercenaries who ‘ravished’ Central America between 1880 and 1930.” —The Americas Ambitious entrepreneurs, isthmian politicians, and mercenaries who dramatically altered Central America’s political culture, economies, and even its traditional social values populate this lively story of a generation of North and Central Americans and their roles in the transformation of Central America from the late nineteenth century until the onset of the Depression. The Banana Men is a study of modernization, its benefits, and its often frightful costs. The colorful characters in this study are fascinating, if not always admirable. Sam “the Banana Man” Zemurray, a Bessarabian Jewish immigrant, made a fortune in Honduran bananas after he got into the business of “revolutin,” and his exploits are now legendary. His hired mercenary Lee Christmas, a bellicose Mississippian, made a reputation in Honduras as a man who could use a weapon. The supporting cast includes Minor Keith, a railroad builder and banana baron; Manuel Bonilla, the Honduran whose cause Zemurray subsidized; and Jose Santos Zelaya, who ruled Nicaragua from 1893 to 1910. The political and social turmoil of modern Central America cannot be understood without reference to the fifty-year epoch in which the United States imposed its political and economic influence on vulnerable Central American societies. The predicament of Central Americans today, as isthmian peoples know, is rooted in their past, and North Americans have had a great deal to do with the shaping of their history, for better or worse. “Recounts incredible stories within the framework of social imperialism and dependency theory.” —Latin American Research Review
Book Synopsis The United States, Honduras, And The Crisis In Central America by : Deborah Sundloff Schulz
Download or read book The United States, Honduras, And The Crisis In Central America written by Deborah Sundloff Schulz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the 1980s Honduras was an obscure backwater, of little public or policy concern in the United States. With the advent of the Reagan administration, however, Hondurans found themselves at the center of the US-Central American imbroglio, a launching pad for the administration's contra war against the Sandinista government in Nicaragua and for counterinsurgency operations against guerrillas in El Salvador. Placing events in the context of Honduran history, the authors provide penetrating insights into the causes of revolution in Central America and the sources of stability that enabled Honduras to escape the civil strife that consumed its neighbors. At the same time, the work offers a fascinating account of Honduran domestic politics and of the personalities, motives, and maneuvers of policymakers on both sides of the U.S.-Honduras relationship—too often a tale of intrigue, violence, and corruption.

Book Synopsis I Am Destroying The Land! by : Susan C Stonich
Download or read book I Am Destroying The Land! written by Susan C Stonich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-07 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about interconnections-those among the historical, geographic, demographic, social, economic, and ecological aspects of development-as well as how Central Americans struggle with the interplay of increasing poverty and environmental degradation. Centering on the case of southern Honduras and expanding to include the Central American region, Susan Stonich's analysis employs an integrative approach that builds on a strong and varied methodological foundation to encompass both political economy and ecology. Stonich examines the systemic linkages among the dynamics of dominant development models and associated patterns of capitalist accumulation, regional demography, rural impoverishment, and environmental decline. By casting the discussion against the backdrop of southern Honduras, she presents a powerful historical record of how larger socio-political communities impact individuals and the natural environment and how, in turn, people respond. She charts the destiny of peasant groups within the dynamics of contemporary capitalism, recognizing that the fates of the peasantry and the natural environment are intimately linked. Stonich's study contributes to an improved understanding of the complex interrelationships between social processes and environmental degradation, offering a timely and pertinent comment on one of the most serious modern challenges
Book Synopsis The Diplomacy of Trade and Investment by : David M. Pletcher
Download or read book The Diplomacy of Trade and Investment written by David M. Pletcher and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a thorough examination of government documents, congressional debates and reports, private papers of government and business leaders, and newspapers, David M. Pletcher begins this monumental study with a comprehensive survey of U.S. trade following the Civil War. He goes on to outline the problems of building a coherent trade policy toward Canada, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America. The study concludes by analyzing a series of abortive trade reform efforts and examining the effects of the Spanish-American War. Pletcher rejects the long-held belief that American business and government engaged in a deliberate, consistent drive for economic hegemony in the hemisphere during the late 18OOs. Instead he finds that the American government improvised and experimented with ways to further trade expansion.
