Book excerpt: This Middle School Course of Study document is designed to be user friendly. Units can be used sequentially and each unit may need a different amount of time to complete. When using this document, consider the students' prior knowledge and their understanding of the concepts. The Idaho Mathematics Achievement Standards are consistently referenced as they form the basis of this organizational document. They have been combined in the units so that students and teachers can readily see connections between mathematical concepts. Additionally, connecting mathematical concepts to other curricular areas is a powerful tool. Suggested activities are listed with possible, and yet, not all-inclusive, cross-curricular connections. Connections with the Idaho Student Information Technology Standards are also encouraged and specific grade-level Technology Standard Benchmarks are provided in Appendix C. Along with connections between mathematical concepts, cross-curricular areas, and technology standards, mathematical process skills involving mathematical communication, reasoning, and problem solving should be addressed and used throughout all the units, all year. Appended are: (1) Resources; (2) Sample Lesson Plan; and (3) Idaho Student Information Technology Standards.

Book Synopsis Mathematics Learning in Early Childhood by : National Research Council
Download or read book Mathematics Learning in Early Childhood written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-11-13 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early childhood mathematics is vitally important for young children's present and future educational success. Research demonstrates that virtually all young children have the capability to learn and become competent in mathematics. Furthermore, young children enjoy their early informal experiences with mathematics. Unfortunately, many children's potential in mathematics is not fully realized, especially those children who are economically disadvantaged. This is due, in part, to a lack of opportunities to learn mathematics in early childhood settings or through everyday experiences in the home and in their communities. Improvements in early childhood mathematics education can provide young children with the foundation for school success. Relying on a comprehensive review of the research, Mathematics Learning in Early Childhood lays out the critical areas that should be the focus of young children's early mathematics education, explores the extent to which they are currently being incorporated in early childhood settings, and identifies the changes needed to improve the quality of mathematics experiences for young children. This book serves as a call to action to improve the state of early childhood mathematics. It will be especially useful for policy makers and practitioners-those who work directly with children and their families in shaping the policies that affect the education of young children.

Book excerpt: Pre-Algebra: Keeping It Simple provides students with a highly accessible approach to foundational mathematical concepts. The text is designed to help students develop basic math skills that will prepare them to succeed in more advanced algebra courses. The text begins with a review of mathematical processes related to whole numbers, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, rounding, and estimation. The following chapter focuses on integers with coverage of exponents, order of operations, absolute value, and square roots. In later chapters, students learn mathematical processes related to fractions and decimals. The final chapter provides students with an introduction to algebra, including working with variables, simplifying expressions, solving linear equations, and understanding proportions. Throughout, the text features emphasis on application, demonstrating real-world use of the concepts in everyday life and other academic disciplines. Practice exams at the end of each chapter help students test their knowledge and reinforce key learnings. Approachable in nature and written to help students master critical knowledge, Pre-Algebra is well suited for beginning courses in the discipline. It is an excellent choice for bridging or fast-track programs. Judith Atkinson earned her master's degree in mathematics and her Ph.D. in civil engineering at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, where she currently teaches both face-to-face and online courses as a tenured professor. Her main focus has been developmental level algebra courses. Dr. Atkinson also teaches a math course for non-science majors, business algebra and calculus, and math for elementary school teachers. She helped develop the UAF Math Fast Track program and coauthored a textbook to go along with the program. Prior to entering the field of teaching, Dr. Atkinson worked as a civil engineer for the Alaska Department of Transportation.
