Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marianne North, an unmarried middle-aged Victorian lady of comfortable means, set off in 1891 on her first expedition to make a pictorial record of the tropical and exotic plants of the world. She produced more than 800 paintings which are housed in a special gallery at Kew. Republished after 85 years thisfacsimile of the 6th edition of the Official Guide to the North Gallery remains an instructive publication to the unique collection of paintings by Marianne North and the gallery. The pictures, painted by North in-situ in the countries indicated and arranged by her in the gallery, have hung in the positions she allocated for them since 1882. The guide does not just dwell on the beauty of the paintings; it also relates the plants and landscapes painted to Kew, its great glasshouses and museums. One hundred and thirty seven years on, it is hard to improve on the praise lavished by the Gardener's Chronicle 'the skilful dashing works of a true artist, which completely succeeds in showing Nature as she is' and the words of Sir Joseph Hooker who saw the paintings as a record of plants 'already disappearing or shortly to disappear before the axe and forest fire'.

Book Synopsis Threatened and Recently Extinct Vertebrates of the World by : Matthew Richardson
Download or read book Threatened and Recently Extinct Vertebrates of the World written by Matthew Richardson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 2214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Habitat loss and degradation are currently the main anthropogenic causes of species extinctions. The root cause is human overpopulation. This unique volume provides, for the very first time, a comprehensive overview of all threatened and recently extinct mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes within the context of their locations and habitats. The approach takes a systematic examination of each biogeographic realm and region of the world, both terrestrial and marine, but with a particular emphasis on geographic features such as mountains, islands, and coral reefs. It reveals patterns useful in biodiversity conservation, helps to put it all into perspective, and ultimately serves as both a baseline from which to compare subsequent developments as well as a standardization of the way threatened species are studied.
Book Synopsis Drosophila melanogaster, Drosophila simulans: So Similar, So Different by : Pierre Capy
Download or read book Drosophila melanogaster, Drosophila simulans: So Similar, So Different written by Pierre Capy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together most of the information available concerning two species that diverged 2-3 million years ago. The objective was to try to understand why two sibling species so similar in several characteristics can be so different in others. To this end, it was crucial to confront all data from their ecology and biogeography with their behavior and DNA polymorphism. Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila simulans are among the two sibling species for which a large set of data is available. In this book, ecologists, physiologists, geneticists, behaviorists share their data on the two sibling species, and several scenarios of evolution are put forward to explain their similarities and divergences. This is the first collection of essays of its kind. It is not the final point of the analyses of these two species since several areas remain obscure. However, the recent publication of the complete genome of D. melanogaster opens new fields for research. This will probably help us explain why D. melanogaster and D. simulans are sibling species but false friends.
Book Synopsis Tourism and Economic Development by : R.N. Ghosh
Download or read book Tourism and Economic Development written by R.N. Ghosh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism has increasingly become a vital element in the economic development of the Indian Ocean region. This volume brings together leading tourism and economics experts from the region to discuss the wide range of problems and issues raised by the increasing significance of tourism such as: tourism and development; dimensions of and assault on rural and urban poverty; empowerment of women; women’s property rights; access of the rural poor to services and resources; political and economic impediments to human resources development; management of energy and environmental resources; and electronic commerce and development. These issues and proposed policies are examined theoretically in the first section of this book, with comparative empirical case studies from Australia, Papua New Guinea, Botswana, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, the Maldives, Mauritius, the Seychelles, China and South Africa illustrating these arguments in the second section. A conclusion sums up the problems found in current policy and practice and puts forward innovative proposals and prospects for tourism and development in the region.
Book Synopsis Killers in the Water - The New Super Sharks Terrorising The World's Oceans by : Sue Blackhall

This book was released on 2012-07-27 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharks are intriguing and beautiful creatures - but they can also be deadly. As we humans have explored the world's oceans and exploited them for tourism and recreation, we have found ourselves coming into contact with more and more sharks. And the outcome can be fatal. From the Seychelles to South Africa, and Australia to North America, tourists, divers and surfers have seemingly found themselves under increased threat from unprovoked shark attacks. Fatal attacks have occurred in locations that were previously thought to be safe, and in late 2010 the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh was rocked by an incredible five shark attacks in a matter of weeks. But are sharks really ruthless, vicious killers, or are they simply reacting to humans invading their habitat? Has the number of shark attacks increased in recent years? What can be done to prevent shark attacks? All these questions and more are answered in this fascinating book.

Book Synopsis Parrots of Africa, Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands by : Laubscher
Download or read book Parrots of Africa, Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands written by Laubscher and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed examination of all aspects of parrots from behavior to their conservation. Parrots' colour and charisma, coupled with the fact that they mimic human speech, make them fascinating to many people. They are ancient birds with unique bill and foot structures that enable them to forage on fruits in the canopy of forest trees as well as on seeds in grasslands. Because they depend on fruits and seeds all year round, most species are confined to the tropics or sub-tropics, where the world's biodiversity is at its greatest. There are over three hundred species of parrots, of which more than one hundred are recognised as rare, endangered, vulnerable or threatened with extinction. Parrots are largely distributed in tropical areas of developing countries where economies are weak and uncertain, and where there is great dependence on the exploitation of natural resources, particularly hard wood evergreen forests, which are preferred parrot habitats. Unfortunately, high levels of corruption are common to these regions, with much illegal trade in animals and little or no law enforcement. Collectors of parrots in the first world pay huge sums for rare parrots. However, research, education and conservation actions are greatly reducing illegal trade in African parrots. This book provides complete coverage of all aspects of the biology of extant African, Malagasy and Mascarene parrots, and reviews our knowledge of extinct and fossil parrots from the region. Particular themes include the behavioural and ecological characteristics of parrots, their species characteristics and conservation biology. Current concepts in avian and conservation biology are also discussed. Parrots of Africa, Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands is aimed at ornithologists, conservation biologists, avian ecologists, academics, bird watchers and parrot fans alike. It is well illustrated, with high quality original photographs, and includes distribution maps, figures and tables.
