Download or read book Macom Farm written by Tom Baldwin and published by BookLocker.com, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macom Farm, in the Township of Prank, a hideaway hamlet in Connecticut—is as beautiful as it is sinister, as tranquil as Gettysburg’s killing fields before the battle cries. Prank has complicated social maladies, underlying secrets, and remarkable attributes as a developer's dreamland, seen by Sullivan Development as a singularly unique opportunity to build a magnificent city structure. Conquering the obstacles devolves into a daunting contest no developer in history has been confronted with before. Jason Lang recently graduated and newly hired at Sullivan, is appointed project manager in charge of exploring the viability of Prank—a seemingly benign career start that instead becomes his baptismal journey into chaos and mayhem. In due course, Jason teams up with Andrea Cole; a stunningly beautiful social analyst hired to evaluate the impact of such a project on the Prank population. Andrea and Jason find common ground and begin an intensely intimate and gripping relationship that endures many twists and ugly hardships. If developers were to descend on Prank and disturb its anthills, the peaceful calm of rural living would be forever disturbed. But worse, a thriving local operation would be severely threatened, and that cannot be allowed to happen. Macom Farm begins the chronicle as an intense standoff between the developer, the townsfolk, and an unknown force with evil ambitions—a mixture of clever parry-and-thrust, legal maneuvering, cyber warfare, flawed law, brutal murders, and perverse strategies.

Book Synopsis Fooling with the Amish by : Dirk Eitzen
Download or read book Fooling with the Amish written by Dirk Eitzen and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2022-09-13 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using Amish Mafia as a window into the interplay between the real and the imagined, this book dissects the peculiar appeals and potential dangers of deception in reality TV and popular entertainment. When Amish Mafia was released in 2012, viewers were fascinated by the stories of this secret group of Amish and Mennonite enforcers who used threats, extortion, and violence to keep members of the Amish community in line—and to line their own pockets. While some of the stories were based loosely on actual events, the group itself was a complete fabrication. Its members were played by ex-Amish and ex-Mennonite young adults acting out scenarios concocted by the show's producers. What is most extraordinary about Amish Mafia is that, even though it was fictional, it was cleverly constructed to appear real. Discovery Channel, which aired it, assiduously maintained that it was real; whole episodes were devoted to proving that it was real; and many viewers (including smart reality TV fans) were fooled into believing it was real. In Fooling with the Amish, Dirk Eitzen examines the fakery in Amish Mafia and how actual viewers of the show responded to it to discover answers to two questions that have long puzzled media scholars: What is it about the so-called reality of reality shows that appeals to and gratifies viewers? How and why are people taken in by falsehoods in the media? Eitzen's ultimate answer to these questions is that, in taking liberties with facts, Amish Mafia works very much like gossip. This helps to explain the workings not just of this and other reality TV shows but also of other forms of media fakery, including fake news. The book winds through numerous fascinating case studies of media fakery, from P. T. Barnum's famous "humbugs" of the nineteenth century to recent TV news scandals. It examines the social and emotional appeals of other forms of entertaining fakery, including professional wrestling and supermarket tabloids. It explains how and why conventions of contrivance evolved in reality TV as well as the ethics of media fakery. And, for readers interested in the Amish, it tells how the ex-Amish "stars" of Amish Mafia got involved in the show and the impact that involvement had on their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ghost of Weir Academy is an old-fashioned ghost story, except for one thing: It takes place in a school. The story gives a historical account of the lives of students who walked the halls of this specialized boarding school, where students studied the social sciences and classics. It tells of relationships – or the lack of relationships – between students and staff. When one staff member slowly begins to show signs of mental instability, as the weeks and months go by, the story of Mary unfolds. Mary believed her condition was caused by the school, so she plotted to exact revenge, and took it. To this day, a glimpse of her ghost can be seen hovering near Weir Academy’s walkway, replaying the fateful night that became the undoing of a once promising school.

After Willie starts a lottery on predicting football results, he makes enough money to support himself.
