Book Synopsis Tales of the Prague Ghetto by : Siegfried Kapper
Download or read book Tales of the Prague Ghetto written by Siegfried Kapper and published by Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trained in philosophy and medicine, the writer, translator, scholar, and political and cultural activist Siegfried Kapper (1821–1879) devoted significant effort to the advancement of Jewish culture in Bohemia, Jewish emancipation, and to the commitment of Jews to contemporary Czech society. The three stories in this collection, which first appeared in the press in the 1840s and were posthumously published as a collection at the end of the century, offer a Romantic and folkloric vision of Jewish culture in Prague. The first story, “Genenda,” displays Kapper’s operatic eye for detail and drama with its account of a dutiful rabbi’s daughter being swept away by a dashing young man, a Christian nobleman disguised as a Jew, a deceit that ends in tragedy. “The Curious Guest” is an intricate tale of a quest for wisdom and power that inevitably leads to the undoing of the arrogant protagonist. The final story, “Glowing Coals,” is a supernatural tale of romantic desire and revenge, displaying Kapper’s skill at deploying the tropes of folklore for dramatic literary effect. The collection not only provides a colorful snapshot of nineteenth-century Czech-Jewish culture but also resonates with universal human themes that transcend a single national experience.

Download or read book Prague Pictures written by John Banville and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-12-10 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the foremost chroniclers of the modern European experience, a panoramic view of a city that has seduced and bewitched visitors for centuries. Prague is the magic capital of Europe. It has been a place of mystery and intrigue since the days of Emperor Rudolf II, who in the late 1500s summoned alchemists and magicians from all over the world to his castle on Hradèany hill. Wars, revolutions, floods, the imposition of Soviet communism, and even the depredations of the tourist boom after the Velvet Revolution of 1989 could not destroy the unique atmosphere of this beautiful, proud, and melancholy city on the Vltava. In this fascinating exploration of a city he loves, celebrated Irish novelist John Banville weaves together stories of Prague past and present. He traces Prague's often tragic history and portrays the people who made it: the emperors and princes, geniuses and charlatans, heroes and scoundrels. He also paints a portrait of the city as he grew to know it, from his first visit in the depths of the Cold War to the eve of the Czech Republic's accession into the European Union at the start of the new millennium. Banville brings the city to vivid life with a colorful tapestry of the people he met, the friends he made, the places he came to know in The City of a Hundred Spires. The fourth book in Bloomsbury's Writer and the City series.

Book excerpt: Few words are as ideologically charged as “ghetto,” a term that has described legally segregated Jewish quarters, dense immigrant enclaves, Nazi holding pens, and black neighborhoods in the United States. Daniel B. Schwartz reveals how the history of ghettos is tied up with struggle and argument over the slippery meaning of a word.
