The recent unprecedented increase in shipbuilding in the United States has resulted in a corresponding demand for workmen, draftsmen, and naval architects. It has therefore become necessary for many engineers and technical men, who have never before been confronted with shipbuilding problems, to transfer their activities from the fields of the various other engineering professions to those of the marine engineer and naval architect. These men are familiar with mechanical processes and have the necessary groundwork in theoretical and applied mathematics to fit them for duties in connection with the production of ships, but lack familiarity with those matters that are peculiar to shipbuilding. It is hoped that this book may aid in furnishing, in compact form, some of the more essential parts of this information. It should also be of value to workmen in shipyards who have only such knowledge of the shipbuilding industry as they have gained from practical experience, and who desire to fit themselves for higher positions. It is manifestly impossible to include in a single volume even a most cursory treatment of all the subjects that are involved in the profession of naval architecture. Certain girders and stringers require brackets in order to prevent collapse from oblique loading it is not an easy matter for-any form of calculation, but a close study of actual experience should produce rules for general guidance. Construction of double bottom - Even the most enlightened naval architects appear 'to have only hazy ideas concerning the structural work performed by the complicated double bottom, which is now a common feature in merchant ships. The more general practice is to dispose the internal framing in the transverse direction, retain ing a very small amount of longitudinal material mainly for local support. These longitudinal intercostal members also fulfil some function as secondary bracing, but the nature of the work performed is very obscure. It is, of course, true that facility of erection has favoured transverse framing but here, again, if economy of weight is required, Search must be made for a distribution which is more in the longitudinal sense than the present practice. Some well known efforts have already been made towards this aim, but the final solution has yet to be sought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ship-Building in Iron and Wood The question, however, whether ships with broadside guns, or ships with Captain Goles's revolving turrets, are to be preferred, still remains unsettled. It will perhaps be found that each of these classes will prove useful in a sphere of its own, and that what ever success may attend Captain Coles's ships, a considerable, if not the largest portion of our future fleet, must still consist of ships with broadside guns. It has been assumed by the advocates of turret ships, in their arguments in their favour, that in revolving turrets alone can guns of very large calibre be used; but it is submitted that this is not necessarily the case if the guns in the broadside of a ship be placed on a traversing platform worked by mechanical appliances; and it may be remarked, that though guns worked on board ship in the way here suggested might not each have individually the same extent of angular traverse as the guns in revolving turrets, yet as all screw ships have to some degree, by judicious management of the helm and the screw, the power of revolving almost on their own axis without going ahead, this objection is very much obviated. It must not be forgotten, also, that the ship to carry a turret, to prevent her being sunk or set on fire, must be as thoroughly protected as the ship to carry broadside guns and though possibly she may be built with her sides of a less height out of the water, yet for a sea-going vessel this advantage has many counter balancing evils.
