Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Introduction to Latin Composition: For Schools and Colleges This volume is intended to aid the classical student in acquiring a practical acquaintance with the difficult but important subject of Latin composition. It aims to be at once simple, progressive, and complete. Starting with the beginner as soon as he has learned a few grammatical forms, it conducts him step by step through a progressive series of lessons and exercises, until he is so far master both of the theory and of the practice of the subject, that he no longer needs the aid of a special text-book. The work consists of three parts, of which the first is purely elementary, and is intended as a companion to the Reader. It aims to give the pupil familiarity with the power and use of grammatical inflections, and facility in the application of the great an controlling principles of the language. Part Second will furnish the learner instruction and practice in Latin composition throughout the subsequent stages of his preparatory course for college. The exercises have special reference to the syntax to the language, and are, to a great extent, imitations of the ordinary constructions contained in the Commentaries of Ceasar, and in the Orations of Cicero. In subject matter they also relate to topics contained in those works. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Latin Composition This book is divided into three parts, each of which provides material for a one-hour course throughout the year. The exercises are based upon outlying parts of Caesar and Cicero, unfamiliar to students in the earlier part of their college course. Parts I and II are designed specially for freshman work. They both cover practically the same ground, thus making it possible to use the book in successive years without employing the same exercise twice. In preparing the passages for translation into Latin two ends have been kept in view: first, to test the student's knowledge of forms and syntax at the places where data collected from the work of successive classes has shown the freshman student to be weak; and, second, to illustrate a few of the finer points of composition which cannot be adequately treated in the preparatory school. This latter feature renders the footnotes necessarily rather bulky. The exercises are arranged in a careful sequence, and should be used in the order in which they stand to secure the most satisfactory results. Part III provides suitable work for students who have completed either Part I or Part II. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Latin Prose Composition In the compilation of a book of this kind the main difficulty lies in determining the order in which the various constructions shall be dealt with. It is obvious that a scientific arrangement, in which constructions were grouped according to their natural relationship, however valuable for purposes of reference, would be of little use in teaching Composition. In such an arrangement constructions must necessarily be classified without regard to their difficulty or the rarity of their occurrence, and the attempt to follow such an order would involve the premature introduction of difficulties and the undue postponement of some of the easiest and most ordinary constructions. While, however, it is impossible that the practical should exactly coincide with the logical order, it is highly desirable that both pupil and teacher should be conscious of some method in the order adopted. An attempt has accordingly been made in this book to effect a compromise between the logical and the practical. Part I. is a reprint of the English Latin Exercises in First Steps in Latin, and affords practice in the Conjugation of Regular Verbs and the Declension of Nouns. Part II. affords further practice in Accidence, and introduces the more ordinary constructions of the Simple Sentence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Prose Composition A new work on Latin Prose seems at first thought altogether superfluous, the works on the subject already existing being so numerous, so varied in character, and in many cases so excellent. The reasons, however, which justified their appearance justify also the appearance of a new one. Conditions are constantly changing, and these demand new groupings and new arrangement of old material, however excellent that may be in itself. The position of Classics in our schools has undergone in late years a radical change. In competition with other subjects on the already wide curriculum of secondary education, and with others clamoring for recognition, the Classics have entered upon a struggle which renders it necessary to vindicate afresh their supreme value as an educational instrument in order to retain for them even the most limited amount of time necessary to make them of any real value to the student. The commercialism of our age has stamped itself upon our educational aims and methods. The average student has no longer at his disposal the amount of time to devote to classical study that could be given to it in former years. We must adapt ourselves to the changing mode of thought and life, and demonstrate anew by practical results the essential value of the Classics. We must so adjust our methods that the student can accomplish the same practical result in considerably less time than formerly. It is more than ever necessary to show by the results of at most three years at Latin some solid foundation of mental training derived therefrom as the hope and promise of further study. It will be readily admitted that for the best comprehension of Latin literature, and for getting the best educational results from the study of Latin, much depends upon the teaching and study of Latin Prose. The book consists of three parts arranged for practice in writing Latin during the last three years of school, and, in addition, a summary of the Elements of Syntax for reference. Treatment. - In the lessons syntax is treated systematically by topics. For content and vocabulary the exercises are based on Caesar's Commentaries and on the Orations of Cicero which are usually read in our schools. Summary of the Elements of Syntax. - The first portion of the book consists of a summary of the Elements of Syntax. This summary contains a statement and explanation of those principles of syntax which are essential for writing Latin in the school, so that in the lessons direct reference may be made to this summary instead of to the confusing mass of information given in the large grammars. References to the grammars are given, however, so that, if desired, they may be used instead of, or in addition to, those given in the summary. The illustrative examples are, for the most part, taken from Caesar or Cicero, that the student may the more easily interpret them. Part I. - Part I consists of a series of twenty-eight lessons based for content and vocabulary on Caesar's Commentaries, Books I - IV. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Latin Composition In using the Vocabulary, it will be noticed that the most general meaning comes first, and the distinctions in meaning of the words that follow are given with special reference to their use in these exercises. Therefore, where a list of several words is given, the student should compare these definitions, in order to determine which will best suit the case in hand; if there appears to be no essential difference, it will be safest to take the first. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Composition for Classes Reading Caesar This little book has grown out of a need felt in my own Caesar classes for some easy but systematic work in Latin Composition. Its purpose is not to present in most comprehensive fashion all the peculiarities of Latin syntax, but by constant repetition to fix in the student's mind some of the simplest constructions of nouns and verbs. All special grammatical notes in the several lessons have been omitted, that the pupil may early form the habit of constant reference to his grammar. Since the book is to be used in connection with Caesar, the constructions emphasized are those recurring most frequently in his text. Imperatives and independent subjunctives have therefore been lightly touched upon. The more difficult varieties of final and consecutive clauses and of relative sentences have been purposely omitted, from the conviction that the child should understand the rule before he considers its exceptions. The finding of phrases illustrative of the principles of syntax introduced in each lesson has been left to the teacher as a valuable class-room exercise. It has been my own practice to have the sections marked "Class Work" written without the aid of the grammar, making each pupil depend for forms and rules entirely upon his own memory. I have also found that a clear tabular statement of the principles studied, with the proper references to the grammar, is of great help in reviewing.
