Book excerpt: This report is an updated version of the report 99-0001 that was written in January 1999. It gives a practical interpretation of the National Radiation Protection Board (NRPB) statement on restrictions on human exposure to static and time varying electromagnetic fields (EMF) and radiation, and includes a section on NRPB-R301 1998. In addition to this update is a new section on hazards to flammable atmospheres. The report is presented in three main sections covering the following topics: a review on the NRPB's guidelines of 1993 and also the 1998 ICNIRP guidelines of major factors that govern the coupling and absorption of EM energy into the human body, the information required by the site surveyor in order to make the initial calculations and comparison of the measured EMF parameters with the investigation levels, to name a few proposals for the procedures required to perform the site survey and the fuller assessment if the investigation or the reference levels have been changed. Two other effects of radio frequency radiation are discussed - ignition of flammable atmospheres and initiation of electro-explosive devices.

Book excerpt: Keys, wallet, cell phone . . . ready to go! Cell phones have become ubiquitous fixtures of twenty-first-century life—suctioned to our ears and stuck in our pockets. Yet, we’ve all heard whispers that these essential little devices give you brain cancer. Many of us are left wondering, as Maureen Dowd recently asked in the New York Times, “Are cells the new cigarettes?” Overpowered brings readers, in accessible and fascinating prose, through the science, indicating biological effects resulting from low, non-thermal levels of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation (levels considered safe by regulatory agencies), coming not only from cell phones, but many other devices we use in our homes and offices every day. Dr. Blank arms us with the information we need to lobby government and industry to keep ourselves and our families safe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide on the contribution of electromagnetic fields to cancer formation. Review the science (over 60 academic references) and learn how test for EMFs, the best meters to buy, and strategies to shield, mitigate, or avoid harmful exposure. “Brandon LaGreca has done an extraordinary job of articulating the science underlying the EMF health effects issue, the different types of EMFs that are ubiquitous in our world, and the many steps that we can take to begin cleaning up our electromagnetic environment.” —Charles Keen, EMF Services, LLC Bonus afterword content: Find out what questions to ask when hiring an EMF inspector, which providers to avoid, and how to select the best meter for testing a home or office yourself. Cancer and EMF Radiation details the science showing DNA damage from nonionizing EMFs, mechanisms of action leading to cancer formation from EMF exposure, and practical strategies to protect you and your family. Four corroborating lines of evidence suggest EMFs are a far more significant risk factor for the development of a number of cancers than previously thought: 1. Experimental research showing DNA damage from EMF exposure 2. Long-term epidemiological studies on cancer development from EMF exposure 3. Mechanistic research on the effects of EMFs on melatonin and calcium channels 4. Research from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Toxicology Program documenting “clear evidence” of increased cancer growth from EMF radiation in animal models Learn about these sources of EMFs: 1. Microwave radiation—radiofrequency fields from mobile phones, smart meters, and Wi-Fi networks 2. Low-frequency EMFs—AC electric and magnetic fields from household wiring and connected devices 3. Voltage transients—higher-frequency harmonics in the electrical grid known as dirty electricity Protect yourself and your family from EMFs with three practical and actionable strategies: 1. Avoid: Properly measure EMFs to determine safe exposure. 2. Remediate: Change lighting and alter electrical circuits to remove voltage transients. 3. Shield: Employ technologies that effectively block EMF transmission into the body.

Book excerpt: This Safety Guide provides recommendations and guidance on a general framework for performing prospective radiological impact assessments for facilities and activities, to estimate and control the radiological effects on the public and on the environment. This radiological environmental impact assessment is intended for planned exposure situations as part of the authorization process and, when applicable, as part of a governmental decision making process for facilities and activities. The situations covered in the assessment include both exposures expected to occur in normal operation as well as potential exposures. The assessment of the radiological impacts includes consideration of the risk of radiation effects for humans and for populations of non-human biota. Guidance is provided on the assumptions and input data to be used, the necessary models for environmental transfer and radiation dose assessment and the definition and use of criteria for informing decisions.

Book excerpt: In the late 1980s, the National Cancer Institute initiated an investigation of cancer risks in populations near 52 commercial nuclear power plants and 10 Department of Energy nuclear facilities (including research and nuclear weapons production facilities and one reprocessing plant) in the United States. The results of the NCI investigation were used a primary resource for communicating with the public about the cancer risks near the nuclear facilities. However, this study is now over 20 years old. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission requested that the National Academy of Sciences provide an updated assessment of cancer risks in populations near USNRC-licensed nuclear facilities that utilize or process uranium for the production of electricity. Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations near Nuclear Facilities: Phase 1 focuses on identifying scientifically sound approaches for carrying out an assessment of cancer risks associated with living near a nuclear facility, judgments about the strengths and weaknesses of various statistical power, ability to assess potential confounding factors, possible biases, and required effort. The results from this Phase 1 study will be used to inform the design of cancer risk assessment, which will be carried out in Phase 2. This report is beneficial for the general public, communities near nuclear facilities, stakeholders, healthcare providers, policy makers, state and local officials, community leaders, and the media.

Book excerpt: Though overall cancer incidence and mortality have continued to decline in recent years, cancer continues to devastate the lives of far too many Americans. In 2009 alone, 1.5 million American men, women, and children were diagnosed with cancer, and 562,000 died from the disease. There is a growing body of evidence linking environmental exposures to cancer. The Pres. Cancer Panel dedicated its 2008¿2009 activities to examining the impact of environmental factors on cancer risk. The Panel considered industrial, occupational, and agricultural exposures as well as exposures related to medical practice, military activities, modern lifestyles, and natural sources. This report presents the Panel¿s recommend. to mitigate or eliminate these barriers. Illus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ergonomics is the branch of engineering science in which biological science is used to study the relationship between workers and their environments. Because of the use of electricity for many purposes, one environmental factor that has become omnipresent today is the electromagnetic field, also referred to as electromagnetic radiation or a fraction of the non-ionizing radiation. The complex interactions of electromagnetic energy with material objects contribute to ergonomics issues because they can cause health hazards in workers, trigger accidental situations, limit the ability of workers to work safely and disturb the function of electronic devices, including medical implants, etc. A better understanding of complex electromagnetic issues in the work environment is considered in this book. This title will be beneficial to workers affected by electromagnetic hazards including wireless transfer of information or power, wireless (induction) heating, joining metal elements with electric-supplied techniques, capacitive heating of dielectric materials, physiotherapeutic or cosmetic electromagnetic treatments, antitheft gates and other monitoring or control systems using wireless solutions, electric transportation and many more. It will help prevent common misunderstandings about electromagnetic hazards and sufficiently reduce where they appear. Electromagnetic Ergonomics is designed to have a positive influence on public health and worker safety in the work environment and brings broad benefits, in particular with respect to research planning and the interpretation of the results, as well as the implementation of science-based evidence regarding the evaluation and elimination of EMF hazards in the operations of enterprises and environmental, labor and sanitary inspections, as well as government regulators responsible for environmental safety issues in the workplace and the daily life environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone, whether they like it or not, is exposed to electromagnetic fields, most of the time, at very low levels. In this case, they are inconsequential, but they can cause adverse health effects when they become intense enough. This topic is complex and sensitive. Covering frequencies from 0 Hz to 300 GHz, Human Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields provides an overview of this vast topic. After a reminder of the concepts of electromagnetic fields, the author presents some examples of sources of radiation in daily life and in the industrial or medical sectors. The biophysical and biological effects of these fields on the human body are detailed and the exposure limits are recalled. The exposure assessment and the implementation of the appropriate regulation within companies are also covered. Technically and practically, this book is aimed at people with a scientific background, risk prevention actors, health physicians, especially occupational doctors, and equipment designers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world of waves. The Earth shakes to its foundations, the seas and oceans tremble incessantly, sounds reverberate through land, sea, and air. Beneath the skin, our brains and bodies are awash with waves of their own, and the Universe is filled by a vast spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, of which visible light is the narrowest sliver. Casting the net even wider, there are mechanical waves, quantum wave phenomena, and the now clearly detected gravitational waves. Look closer and deeper and more kinds of waves appear, down to the most fundamental level of reality. This Very Short Introduction looks at all the main kinds of wave, their sources, effects, and uses. Mike Goldsmith discusses how wave motion results in a range of phenomena, from reflection, diffraction, interference, and polarization in the case of light waves to beats and echoes for sound. All waves, however different, share many of the same features, and, as Goldsmith shows, for all their complexities many of their behaviours are fundamentally simple. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
