It is a compilation of 30 years of quality-related work experience and the result of frustration at the number of books necessary, at times, to provide statistical support. To that end, the intent of this book is to provide the quality professional working in virtually any industry a quick, convenient, and comprehensive guide to properly utilize statistics in an efficient and effective manner. This book will be a useful reference when preparing for and taking many of the ASQ quality certification examinations, including the Certified Quality Technician (CQT), Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB), Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB), and Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE). This book is an expansion of the work of Robert A. Dovich in his books Quality Engineering Statistics and Reliability Statistics. It builds on and expands Dovich's method of presenting statistical applications in a simple, easy-to-follow format.

The importance of reliability assumes new dimensions, primarily because of the higher cost of these highly complex machines required by mankind and the implication of their failure. This is why all industrial organizations wish to equip their scientists, engineers, managers and administrators with a knowledge of reliability concepts and applications. Based on the author's 20 years experience as reliability educator, researcher and consultant, Reliability Engineering introduces the reader systematically to reliability evaluation, prediction, allocation and optimization. It also covers further topics, such as maintainability and availability, software reliability, economics of reliability, reliability management, reliability testing, etc. A reliability study of some typical systems has been included to introduce the reader to the practical aspects. The book is intended for graduate students of engineering schools and also professional engineers, managers and reliability administrators as it has a wide coverage of reliability concepts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how statistical methods can be effectively applied in the work of an engineer in terms that can be readily understood. Application of these methods enables the effort involved in experiments to be reduced, the results of these experiments to be fully evaluated, and statistically sound statements to be made as a result. Products can be developed more efficiently and manufactured more cost-effectively, not to mention with greater process reliability. The overarching aim is to save time, money, and materials. From the examples provided, the nature of the practical application can be clearly grasped in each case. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Statistik für Ingenieure by Hartmut Schiefer and Felix Schiefer, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2018. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). The present version has been revised technically and linguistically by the authors in collaboration with a professional translator. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliability engineering is a rapidly evolving discipline, whose purpose is to develop methods and tools to predict, evaluate, and demonstrate reliability, maintainability, and availability of components, equipment, and systems, as well as to support development and production engineers in building in reliability and maintainability. To be cost and time effective, reliability engineering has to be coordinated with quality assurance activities, in agreement with Total Quality Management (TQM) and Concurrent Engineering efforts. To build in reliability and maintainability into complex equipment or systems, failure rate and failure mode analyses have to be performed early in the development phase and be supported by design guidelines for reliability, maintainability, and software quality as well as by extensive design reviews. Before production, qualification tests on prototypes are necessary to ensure that quality and reliability targets have been met. In the production phase, processes need to be selected and monitored to assure the required quality level. For many systems, availability requirements have also to be satisfied. In these cases, stochastic processes can be used to investigate and optimize availability. including logistical support as well. Software often plays a dominant role, requiring specific quality assurance activities. This book presents the state-of-the-art of reliability engineering, both in theory and practice. It is based on over 25 years experience of the author in this field, half of which was in industry and half as Professor for reliability engineering at the ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich).
