This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evaluation of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) by the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) focuses on maternal conditions, childhood illness, and malnutrition. Specifically, the chapters address acute illness and undernutrition in children, principally under age 5. It also covers maternal mortality, morbidity, stillbirth, and influences to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy. Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous economic, sociocultural, and health problems continue to impede the optimal progress of many millions of people in the developing countries in tropical and other geographic regions of the world. Thus, tropical medicine has many aspects including parasitology, bacteriology, and virology, environmental sanitation and hygiene, nutrition, pharmacology, immunology, agriculture, eco nomics, political science, anthropology, sociology, and behavioral sciences. Like the mythical Proteus, the individual dealing with tropical medicine must assume many roles. There is a growing recognition of the unique problems of the tropical countries. This has led to concerted efforts by many international agencies to attempt to obtain new tools to control many of the tropical diseases that have defied previous attempts at large-scale control. The involvement of the world's leading scientists and institutions as well as the best talents and resources of the developing countries themselves has inspired considerable research in tropical medicine with an inevitable exponential growth in publications. The new series Critical Reviews in Tropical Medicine is being launched to provide topical state of-the-art critiques of selected subjects in this burgeoning field. Authored by active investigators in their chosen topics, these reviews should be useful for all health professionals, social scientists, and administrators involved in planning interventions, both preventive and therapeutic, in developing regions of the world. Contributions included in Volume 1 span parasitology, infectious disease, immunology, gastroenterology, liver disease, and nutrition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MIT International Nutrition Planning Program (INP) was initiated in the fall of 1972 with a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, later supplemented by funds from USAID under the 2110 Program. Con ceived as a multidisciplinary undertaking, the INP was a joint effort of the Department of Nutrition and Food Science and the Center for Inter national Studies at MIT that also included representatives of the Depart ments of Economics, Political Science, Urban Studies, Humanities (Anthropology), and Civil Engineering. It has been successful in attract ing graduate students and conducting research on various international food and nutrition problems, including the design of intervention pro grams. A condition of the original grant from the Rockefeller Foundation was the organization of a meeting to summarize and evaluate the prog ress of the program. It was ultimately decided that the best approach would be a workshop that would attempt to assess what had been learned about the implementation of food and nutrition policies since the start of the INP. Out of concern for food and nutrition policy issues, the World Hunger Programme of The United Nations University (UNU) and the Ford Foundation also agreed to cosponsor the workshop.

Book Synopsis A Good Nutritional Start, Improving the Nutrition of Mothers and Young Children by : International Union of Nutritional Sciences
Download or read book A Good Nutritional Start, Improving the Nutrition of Mothers and Young Children written by International Union of Nutritional Sciences and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Recommendations for the improvement of maternal and child nutrition are presented in a report prepared in recognition of the International Year of the Child. Prenatal nutrition and infant feeding have great consequences for subsequent development or mortality in early life, as well as for health and disease in adulthood. Methods of infant feeding have become a world concern. Nutritional needs and problems of the mother/child dyad are considered in 3 stages: materno-fetal feeding, breast feeding, and weaning. Public health and education measures to protect mothers and children from malnutrition and infection through these stages are discussed. The nutritional adequacy of breast milk, especially in developing countries, is also at issue. Practical approaches to inadequate lactation are described in terms of interference with milk let-down reflexes and poor maternal diet. Current views on weaning mixtures are examined with respect to time for introduction, infant physiological needs and maturity, and potential hazards. (nm).
