Book excerpt: In this work, a comprehensive review on Photoplethysmography, its clinical applications and the analysis of PPG signals are given. Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a simple and low-cost optical technique that can be used to detect blood volume changes in the micro vascular layer of tissue. Mostly it is used as a non-invasive technique to make measurements at the skin surface. Five known PPG recordings are studied. Chapter 1 reviews the PPG signals as a marker for clinical applications. Chapter 2 emphasizes the review on PPG analysis with respect to the Heart Rate Turbulence and Ventricular Premature Beat. Chapter 3 analyzes the PPG signals with respect to Hurst component, Singular Value Decomposition, Euclidean Distance and K-means Clustering. Chapter 4 analyzes the PPG signals with respect to the statistical parameters like mean, variance, standard deviation, skewness and Kurtosis. Chapter 5 discusses the conclusion and future scope. This monograph is particularly useful for signal processing engineers, undergraduate and postgraduate student community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book trains the next generation of scientists representing different disciplines to leverage the data generated during routine patient care. It formulates a more complete lexicon of evidence-based recommendations and support shared, ethical decision making by doctors with their patients. Diagnostic and therapeutic technologies continue to evolve rapidly, and both individual practitioners and clinical teams face increasingly complex ethical decisions. Unfortunately, the current state of medical knowledge does not provide the guidance to make the majority of clinical decisions on the basis of evidence. The present research infrastructure is inefficient and frequently produces unreliable results that cannot be replicated. Even randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the traditional gold standards of the research reliability hierarchy, are not without limitations. They can be costly, labor intensive, and slow, and can return results that are seldom generalizable to every patient population. Furthermore, many pertinent but unresolved clinical and medical systems issues do not seem to have attracted the interest of the research enterprise, which has come to focus instead on cellular and molecular investigations and single-agent (e.g., a drug or device) effects. For clinicians, the end result is a bit of a “data desert” when it comes to making decisions. The new research infrastructure proposed in this book will help the medical profession to make ethically sound and well informed decisions for their patients.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we present the results of the spectral analysis of photoplethysmography (PPG) signals for normals and patients with various cardiovascular disorders. Photoplethysmography is a non-invasive technique that measures relative blood volume changes in the blood vessels close to the skin. The PPG signal of 10 subjects was recorded from the earlobes. Five of the subjects were critically ill patients (2-Atrial Flutter, 3-Post Myocardial Infarction) and the remaining five were normals. The spectral analysis indicates that the contents of the PPG signal are different for normals and cardiovascular patients. We also investigated Heart Rate Van ability (HRV) using the PPG signal. These results show that PPG can be used to analyze cardiovascular disorders and supplement existing methods of analyzing HRV.
