Book excerpt: This text treats the fundamentals of optical and infrared detection in terms of the behavior of the radiation field, the physical properties of the detector, and the statistical behavior of the detector output. Both incoherent and coherent detection are treated in a unified manner, after which selected applications are analyzed, following an analysis of atmospheric effects and signal statistics. The material was developed during a one-semester course at M.I.T. in 1975, revised and presented again in 1976 at Lincoln Laboratory, and rewritten for publication in 1977. Chapter 1 reviews the derivation of Planck's thermal radiation law and also presents several fundamental concepts used throughout the text. These include the three thermal distribution laws (Boltzmann, Fermi-Dirac, Bose Einstein), spontaneous and stimulated emission, and the definition and counting of electromagnetic modes of space. Chapter 2 defines and analyzes the perfect photon detector and calculates the ultimate sensitivity in the presence of thermal radiation. In Chapter 3, we turn from incoherent or power detection to coherent or heterodyne detection and use the concept of orthogonal spatial modes to explain the antenna theorem and the mixing theorem. Chapters 4 through 6 then present a detailed analysis of the sensitivity of vacuum and semiconductor detectors, including the effects of amplifier noise.

The book dexterously deals with problems such as the jurisdiction of a Police Officer, the dying declaration of victims, the conducting of inquest, arrest, interrogation and confession of the accused, etc. Apart from Police Officers, Advocates, Law and Judicial Officers would also find this book very useful as a reference book. The reference to judgements pertaining to a host of criminal cases during the period 1965-2018 merit careful study by the guardians of Law. The checklist provided at the end of each chapter can serve as a ready-reckoner to the Police Officers at various stages of the investigation. A trainee and a veteran equally will find this book a useful aid. To cite an example, under chapter 14, “Arrest”, he has cited 37 landmark judgements. A most praise-worthy feature of the book is its detailed discussion on the immature juveniles, who are in conflict with law and the crimes against children and women. The annexure to the book is of immense use as a ready- reckoner, especially annexure I and II by which a Police Officer may easily find whether a particular offence in any of the most frequently used special enactment is cognizable, bailable etc. The Author has fulfilled the needs of the investigating Officers in the epilogue by providing 47 points which may go against the prosecution, and therefore, has given 48 tips for the successful prosecution of a criminal case by a Police Officer. Again, in the spirit of an academic researcher, the Author has given a catalogue of 724 Checklists in all the Chapters so that the readers would find the book highly informative to have a statutorily authorised answer to any doubt in a given situation in any of the investigative procedures.
