Assistive devices such as wheelchairs are used by children with mobility limitations and all over the world for the purpose of increasing independence and mobility. This freedom of mobility raises the issue of safety provided by either the manual or power wheelchair. Researchers have looked at the safety of manual and power wheelchairs separately and identified factors that increase aild decrease risks associated with wheelchair accidents. Currently there is no data comparing the level of safety between manual and power wheelchair use. The purpose of this study was to identify only differences in safety concerns between a manual versus a power wheelchair. Methods. This study was conducted as a research survey and was distributed to parents of pediatric individuals who were wheelchair users. These children were living in the Portland metropolitan area and were independent in wheelchair mobility. The level of safety was determined by a numerical scale. Results. As predicted, there was no statistically significant difference in safety between power and manual wheelchair use. Conclusion and Discussion. Although no statistical significance was found in the total safety level, significant differences were found in individual safety questions: This data will be used to provide healthcare professionals, caregivers, and wheelchair manufactures information so that a safer wheelchair can be prescribed, designed, and distributed to children with mobility limitations.

Like the previous bestselling editions, the 4th edition follows the practice pattern categories of the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice and uses the IFC model of the disabling process as it presents up-to-date evidence-based coverage of treatment. In this latest edition, Suzann Campbell DeLapp, Robert J. Palisano, and Margo N. Orlin have added more case studies and video clips, additional chapters and Medline-linked references online, and Evidence to Practice boxes to make it easy to find and remember important information. Provides comprehensive foundational knowledge in decision making, screening, development, motor control, and motor learning, the impairments of body function and structure, and the PT management of pediatric disorders. Reflects a family-centered care model throughout to help you understand how to involve children and their caregivers in developing and implementing intervention plans. Emphasizes an evidence-based approach that incorporates the latest research for the best outcomes. Book excerpt: Washington's progressive champion explains how we can achieve a truly inclusive America that works for all of us In November 2016, Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, the first Indian American woman to serve in that role. Two years later, the "fast-rising Democratic star and determined critic of President Donald Trump," according to Politico's Playbook 2017 "Power List," won reelection with more votes than any other member of the House. Jayapal, co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, proved her progressive bonafides when she introduced the most comprehensive Medicare-for-all bill to Congress in February. Behind the story of Jayapal's rise to political prominence lie over two decades of devoted advocacy on behalf of immigrants and progressive causes—and years of learning how to turn activism into public policy that serves all Americans. Use the Power You Have is Jayapal's account of the path from sixteen-year-old Indian immigrant to grassroots activist, state senator, and now progressive powerhouse in Washington, DC. Written with passion and insight, Use the Power You Have offers a wealth of ideas and inspiration for a new generation of engaged citizens interested in fighting back and making change, whether in Washington or in their own communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Assistive technology is widely used across the population, however therapists often underutilize it for young children. The purpose of this case report was to prepare a toddler with arthrogryposis for use of a trial power wheelchair in a preschool environment. CASE DESCRIPTION: The participant was 2-year, 5-month old female with arthrogryposis. The participant was limited in her active range of motion. The participant’s father expressed interest in improving her independence via a power wheelchair. An examination was performed through observation of her functional abilities and using the Assessment of Learning Powered Mobility (ALP), the Wheelchair Skills Checklist (WSC), Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory Computer Adaptive Test (PEDI-CAT), and the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM). An interventional training program was implemented once a week for 15 weeks utilizing positive reinforcement and a power mobility device. OUTCOMES: Upon follow-up seven months later with the participant’s family, they reported that she utilized her trial device in a classroom environment. She met six out of the seven wheelchair criteria and progressed from a phase 3 to phase 4 on the ALP. The COPM demonstrated significant gains across all occupational performance measures for both performance and satisfaction. DISCUSSION: The Outcomes of this case report demonstrate the ability of a power mobility training program to prepare a toddler with arthrogryposis for trial device use in her classroom environment.

Book excerpt: The developmental challenges of children with special needs means they are often more at risk of physical or emotional exploitation. This book provides invaluable tools to help parents, carers and teachers protect vulnerable children. Difficult topics are sensitively and straightforwardly addressed through step-by-step guidelines for parents and learning activities for children. Guidance to carers includes information on how to identify warning signs of abuse, and recognise tell-tale behaviour changes in their child. Intervention activities help children learn which adults to trust and how to stay safe, while reducing the fear, shame or stigma surrounding abuse. Aimed at ages 5-12, these learning devices have been specifically designed to meet a range of comprehension and developmental abilities, with instructions for parents to adapt them to meet the specific needs of their child. This important guidebook empowers adults to fulfil their responsibility to protect and support children, and to provide a safe environment in which every child can reach their highest potential free from coercion or abuse.
