Book excerpt: The reliability of electrical energy networks depends on the quality and availability of their electrical equipment, e.g., power transformers. Local failures inside their insulation can lead to breakdowns resulting in high outage and penalty costs. To prevent these destructive events, power transformers are tested for partial discharge (PD) activity in a routine test before shipment. Furthermore, PD activity can be evaluated as a diagnostic measurement on-site (on-line or off-line) or be constantly monitored during service using the ultra-high frequency (UHF) method. In this thesis, a calibration procedure is proposed for the UHF method used in power transformers, which is lacking so far. The calibration process is required to ensure both reproducibility and comparability of UHF measurements. Only a calibrated UHF measurement procedure can be deemed reliable and eventually be introduced to supplement in (site-)acceptance tests of power transformers. The proposed calibration method considers two factors: The influence of the UHF sensors' sensitivity and that of the UHF instrument characteristics, including accessories like cables, pre-amplifier, etc. The UHF instruments' influence is corrected by using a defined and invariable test signal as a reference for all recording devices comparable to the calibration method used in IEC 60270 for electrical PD measurement. The sensitivity of the UHF sensor is addressed by a characterization of UHF sensors using the antenna factor (AF) measured in a special reproducible setup, i.e., a GTEM cell. In this thesis, a self-built GTEM cell is presented, which is oil-filled to address the environmental conditions inside a transformer where the sensor will be used. With such a cell, influences on the AF of UHF sensors are investigated, and it is shown that sensor sensitivities measured in an air-filled cell can be corrected to the oil environment. A practical evaluation of the proposed calibration procedure is performed in a laboratory setup on a distribution transformer with different UHF instruments and sensors using artificial PD signals and real high voltage driven PD sources. Finally, this thesis identifies future research topics, which may be needed to improve the proposed UHF calibration procedure for power transformers and the UHF method in general.

Book excerpt: The stability of any distribution network is very much dependant on the performance of the power transformers. These transformers need to be monitored to ensure that any unwanted conditions, including high risk defects, are detected. The previous and current transformer failures in the Northern Cape Operating Unit show that the health status in the Plant Health Indicator of the transformers was on category A. Category A status means the transformers were healthy. The root causes of failure were that only some of the Dissolved Gas Analysis parameters were monitored. The transformers were shown to be healthy by the Plant Health Indicator at the time of the failure. Parameters such as cooling, bushings, tap changers, operating temperatures, ageing and loss of life were not monitored. The majority of transformer failures recorded were affected by the parameters mentioned above, of which some are not monitored in the Plant Health Indicator. This research study discusses the application of integrated online condition monitoring for power transformers as one of the techniques to assess the condition of the power transformer during operation. The integrated online condition monitoring allows for transformer condition assessment without having to switch off the transformer, thereby minimising power supply interruptions. The integrated online condition monitoring system is unique technology that monitors the condition of various parameters of the power transformer such as the cooling fans, on-load tap changer, bushings, transformer operating temperatures, dissolved gas analysis, transformer ageing and loss of life. The research design is quantitative with data analysis retrieved directly from the online condition monitoring server. The results from the bushings, cooling fans, tap changer and temperatures form part of the analysis. Data analysis lead to a discussion of these parameters, which highlights the problems currently experienced with transformer failures in the Northern Cape Operating Unit. The research study revealed that, although Eskom is having the best maintenance practices in power transformers, there is a need to improve and save costs, as the current maintenance strategies of power transformers are expensive. The results of the study should be regarded as exploratory, and provide directions to researchers for further, more in-depth studies in this field. The cost analysis was performed over a period of ten years, as compared to the current costs of maintenance/monitoring and asset replacement strategies of power transformers. The total saving per year was a great benefit for tasks such as inspections/maintenance/monitoring and asset replacement. This was validated by the results from the proposed transformer online monitoring technology that can predict the defects which may result in catastrophic transformer failures.

Book excerpt: Recent Trends in the Condition Monitoring of Transformers reflects the current interest in replacing traditional techniques used in power transformer condition monitoring with non-invasive measures such as polarization/depolarization current measurement, recovery voltage measurement, frequency domain spectroscopy and frequency response analysis. The book stresses the importance of scrutinizing the condition of transformer insulation which may fail under present day conditions of intensive use with the resulting degradation of dielectric properties causing functional failure of the transformer. The text shows the reader how to overcome the key challenges facing today’s maintenance policies, namely: The selection of appropriate techniques for dealing with each type of failure process accounting for the needs of plant owners, plant users and wider society; and Cost-efficiency and durability of effect. Many of the failure-management methods presented rely on the fact that most failures give warning when they are imminent. These potential failures give rise to identifiable physical conditions and the novel approaches described detect them so that action can be taken to avoid degeneration into full-blown functional failure. This “on-condition” maintenance means that equipment can be left in service as long as a specified set of performance standards continue to be met, avoiding the costly downtime imposed by routine and perhaps unnecessary maintenance but without risking equally expensive failure. Recent Trends in the Condition Monitoring of Transformers will be of considerable interest to both academic researchers in power systems and to engineers working in the power generation and distribution industry showing how new and more efficient methods of fault diagnosis and condition management can increase transformer efficiency and cut costs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electrical power is an important part of daily life and a necessity for the development of modern industry. The dependency of a country's economic development on electrical power is growing rapidly. Consequently, planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining power delivery systems must keep pace with the escalating demand of such development. Power transformers are a key component of a power transmission system, and condition monitoring and failure diagnosis techniques are commonly required by transformer owners for reliability and maintenance purposes. Despite several decades of research into transformer vibration and condition monitoring techniques, state-of-the-art development in this area still falls short in the understanding of the mechanisms involved and in industry implementation. The objective of this thesis therefore is to investigate the vibration characteristics of a power transformer with and without structural damage and to develop a vibration-based transformer condition monitoring technique. It is hoped that this work could give a better understanding of transformer vibration and its application to condition monitoring. To that end, several aspects of transformer vibration are studied experimentally and numerically, including its excitation forces, modal characteristics, and vibration frequency responses. The finite element (FE) method is employed as the main approach for numerical analysis of the aforementioned aspects. The effect of the arrangement of ferromagnetic parts on the modelling of winding electromagnetic (EM) forces is discussed in detail with the purpose of improving its modelling accuracy. Special considerations, i.e., the anisotropic mechanical properties of core lamination, of transformer vibration modelling are summarised based on the traditional experimental modal analysis. Vibration features of a transformer with structural anomalies, especially with cases of winding failure, are investigated using a verified FE model. In addition, the frequency response function and its variations caused by structural anomalies are studied experimentally under both mechanical and electrical excitations. It is shown that a structural anomaly will produce shifts in the natural frequency and changes in the vibration response. The experimental results also demonstrate that the transformer mechanical resonance can be excited by internal electrical excitations, which enables operational modal analysis (OMA) and OMA-based online monitoring. An algorithm based on the time-domain NExt/ITD method is employed as an OMA technique to identify transformer modal parameters. The features of transformer vibration and operational conditions are considered in the proposed algorithm, which improves the identification accuracy in some cases. The identification method is also applied to the same transformer with core and winding anomalies. Results show that the OMA method is capable of identifying transformer modal parameters and thus can be utilised for online condition monitoring.
