Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three conditions plague us individually and socially—the compulsion to be successful, to be powerful, and to be right. Jesus faced these demons in the wilderness, and they tempt us as well. When used selfishly or for personal gain, success, power, and ideology can weaken and corrupt. However, when applied humbly and compassionately, they can be useful, even transformative. Central to the Christian Scriptures are the stories of Jesus and his disciples, and no account is more inspiring than that told by an anonymous author we call Luke. His Gospel, aptly described as “the most beautiful book in the world,” and its sequel, the book of Acts, narrate the history of Jesus and early Christianity. These books, known by scholars as Luke–Acts, constitute over one quarter of the New Testament. Together they reveal what success, power, and truth look like spiritually, from God’s perspective. Because Luke does not “do theology” in a vacuum, that is, for the sake of theology alone, questions of Luke’s purpose in composing his two-volume work impact Christianity’s relationship to the secular world, particularly issues of peace, equality, and social justice. In fact, social and political categories may be as important for understanding Luke as traditional theological ones. While exploring fascinating perspectives on Luke as historian, literary artist, and theologian, Power Revealed approaches Luke–Acts exegetically, expositing the biblical text for practical, pastoral, and spiritual needs. Useful for individual or group study, each chapter contains aids to learning, including (a) chapter summaries or outlines, (b) homework assignments, and (c) learning objectives.

Book excerpt: In the composition of this book I experienced a growing conviction that the thing with which we believe we are familiar is not the New Testament; it is a conventionalized popular understanding of the New Testament. The simplicity of the New Testament can be deceptive. We have lived with it so long that its explosive power has become sweet reasonableness. I have noticed this not as a preacher but simply as a professional interpreter. It is our office to explain the text....The New Testament interpreter finds that he has the unpleasant task of liberating the text from certain encumbrances. John L. McKenzie, from the preface

In The God of Evolution, Denis Edwards tackles hard questions about the relationship between contemporary science and Christian faith. By examining traditional Christian concepts through the prism of evolutionary thought, Edwards opens up new ways of thinking about the nature of God and the universe."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Finalist for the 2020 Kirkus Prize for Nonfiction | One of Time Magazines's 100 Must-Read Books of 2020 | Longlisted for the 2020 Porchlight Business Book Awards "An entertaining quest to trace the origins and implications of the names of the roads on which we reside." —Sarah Vowell, The New York Times Book Review When most people think about street addresses, if they think of them at all, it is in their capacity to ensure that the postman can deliver mail or a traveler won’t get lost. But street addresses were not invented to help you find your way; they were created to find you. In many parts of the world, your address can reveal your race and class. In this wide-ranging and remarkable book, Deirdre Mask looks at the fate of streets named after Martin Luther King Jr., the wayfinding means of ancient Romans, and how Nazis haunt the streets of modern Germany. The flipside of having an address is not having one, and we also see what that means for millions of people today, including those who live in the slums of Kolkata and on the streets of London. Filled with fascinating people and histories, The Address Book illuminates the complex and sometimes hidden stories behind street names and their power to name, to hide, to decide who counts, who doesn’t—and why.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ask a random American what springs to mind about Sedona, Arizona, and they will almost certainly mention New Age spirituality. Nestled among stunning sandstone formations, Sedona has built an identity completely intertwined with that of the permanent residents and throngs of visitors who insist it is home to powerful vortexes—sites of spiraling energy where meditation, clairvoyance, and channeling are enhanced. It is in this uniquely American town that Susannah Crockford took up residence for two years to make sense of spirituality, religion, race, and class. Many people move to Sedona because, they claim, they are called there by its special energy. But they are also often escaping job loss, family breakdown, or foreclosure. Spirituality, Crockford shows, offers a way for people to distance themselves from and critique current political and economic norms in America. Yet they still find themselves monetizing their spiritual practice as a way to both “raise their vibration” and meet their basic needs. Through an analysis of spirituality in Sedona, Crockford gives shape to the failures and frustrations of middle- and working-class people living in contemporary America, describing how spirituality infuses their everyday lives. Exploring millenarianism, conversion, nature, food, and conspiracy theories, Ripples of the Universe combines captivating vignettes with astute analysis to produce a unique take on the myriad ways class and spirituality are linked in contemporary America.

Book excerpt: The field of school consultation, which is centered principally in school psychology and cuts across related disciplines such as special education and school counseling, has never had a comprehensive volume that examines its research perspectives and methodologies, its models of practice, and its future research directions. That is the mission of this Handbook. It provides both producers and consumers of school consultation with an invaluable snapshot of its current boundaries and rapidly growing content. Key features of this outstanding new book include the following: research oriented - whereas many books dealing with school consultation practice have appeared over the last decade, none has attempted to provide a comprehensive review of research findings and methods supporting its growing body of evidence-based practice. author expertise - chapter authors are well known for their contributions to the school consultation research literature and, collectively, are recognized for their ability to translate scientific findings into implications for practice. commentary chapters - commentary chapters written by leading scholars provide integrative critiques of the book’s three major sections. This book is intended for researchers, graduate students, and practitioners in school psychology and related human service disciplines, including special education, counselor education, counseling psychology, and school social work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From studying Paul's letter to the Romans, we can learn the content of the Christian faith like nowhere else in the New Testament. Paul's words are loaded with divine truth and require careful study and thought. Indeed the letter to the Romans is a theological jewel, but Paul's discussions in the letter are sensible and practical. "As the name of the letter indicates, Paul wrote it to a church in a city known as Rome. At the same time without knowing it, he wrote it to the whole world and for all the ages, supporting the efforts of cross-cultural ministry and providing a key to understanding the Bible. So even though this great letter was addressed to the saints in Rome during the first century, its message is eternal, and its mandates are universal." -French L. Arrington

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global icon is an omnipresent but poorly understood element of mass culture. This book asks why audiences around the world have embraced particular iconic figures, how perceptions of these figures have changed, and what this tells us about transnational relations since the Cold War era. Prestholdt addresses these questions by examining one type of icon: the anti-establishment figure. As symbols that represent sentiments, ideals, or something else recognizable to a wide audience, icons of dissent have been integrated into diverse political and consumer cultures, and global audiences have reinterpreted them over time. To illustrate these points the book examines four of the most evocative and controversial figures of the past fifty years: Che Guevara, Bob Marley, Tupac Shakur, and Osama bin Laden. Each has embodied a convergence of dissent, cultural politics, and consumerism, yet popular perceptions of each reveal the dissonance between shared, global references and locally contingent interpretations. By examining four very different figures, Icons of Dissent offers new insights into global symbolic idioms, the mutability of common references, and the commodification of political sentiment in the contemporary world.
