This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the distinguished Roman Catholic theologian Bernard Cooke reassesses the long-standing Christian description of divine power. The word "power" evokes the spheres of economic, political, and social life. Cooke suggests, however, that the deepest questions about conflicting powers are theological and concern what Christians have traditionally referred to as "the Holy Spirit" and "salvation." He believes that the twentieth-century reappraisal of the theological view of power may represent the most radical paradigm shift to touch Christianity in eighteen hundred years. In present-day scholarly discussions of pneumatology (the theology of the Holy Spirit), there is widespread agreement that the traditional description of the Spirit of God as the third person of the trinity is both inadequate and misleading. Much more reflection on the notion of "spirit" as applied to God is needed, says Cooke, and the use of the modern understanding of "person" in reference to God's Spirit must be challenged. Granted that, however, what would replace it? There is no ready answer, and ultimately one is faced with mystery. But greater insight into personal communication and relationships, increased understanding of the function of symbols and rituals, and greater awareness of the sacramentality of creation and especially of believing Christian communities seem to open up new avenues of reflection. Cooke follows these paths in an attempt to frame an experience-based pneumatology, offering a phenomenological description of selected spheres of power-economic, political, social, personal-as arenas to perceive the agency of the Spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resurgence of Pentecostal, charismatic Christianityepitomized in the global Southhas thrown Catholicism back on itself, and has challenged it to reassess its ecclesial self-understanding. The Catholic Church has been accused of having forgotten the Spirit. Despite the progress made by the Catholic Church to redress this so-called pneumatological deficit, it nonetheless remains the case that Roman Catholicism and charismatic Christianity seems to be mutually exclusive. Why and how does the Roman Catholic Church today still lack a fully-developed pneumatological-charismatic ecclesiology?Catholicism and the Spirit sets out to address such questions, and argues that the Church must overcome its ultraconservatism and re-envision a robust Spirit-led ecclesiology to meet the demands of ecclesial renewal.

Book Synopsis Divine Worship and Human Healing by : Bruce T. Morrill
Download or read book Divine Worship and Human Healing written by Bruce T. Morrill and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Would many believers consider a wake or funeral an act of worship? What does it mean to say that in anointing the sick or administering Viaticum to the dying humans are healed? Such questions plumb the biblical and traditional depths of the paschal mystery. Just as Jesus' ministry at the social-religious margins revealed the center of his faith in God'??s reign, so also the church's ministry to sickness and death reveals much about the baptismal and Eucharistic worship so central to its entire life. In Divine Worship and Human Healing Bruce Morrill turns to the rites serving the sick, dying, deceased, and grieving to show why sacramental liturgy is so fundamental to the life of faith. Readers will appreciate both his compelling narratives from actual pastoral experience and his engagement with biblical, theological, historical, and social-scientific resources. Morrill invites readers to discover how the liturgical ministry of healing discloses God's merciful love amid communities of faith. In 2017, this Movement, celebrated its 50th Jubilee anniversary in the Roman Catholic Church. However, Cremeens presents here the never-before heard story of that Movement among the Orthodox Churches in North America. He recounts the history of this spiritual renewal movement through the first-hand accounts and eyewitnesses of Orthodox clergy and laity who testify to their life-changing encounters with the Holy Spirit.
Book Synopsis Practical Sacramental Theology by : Bruce T. Morrill
Download or read book Practical Sacramental Theology written by Bruce T. Morrill and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What motivates practice of the liturgy and sacramental rites of the church? Does the worship of God begin and end within each ritual enactment, or does the truth and value of sacramental celebration reside in the broader context of Christian life in church and society? For more than two decades, prominent Jesuit sacramental-liturgical theologian Bruce Morrill has explored the promise and problems inherent in the Second Vatican Council’s call to renew liturgy’s basic purpose—namely, the glorification of God and the sanctification of people. Morrill’s fundamental argument is that this ancient Christian principle is of a piece, that divine glory and human holiness are, so to speak, two sides of a single coin. The value of liturgy and sacraments is depleted, if not lost, unless they function within a holistic practice of faith that seeks the upbuilding of ethical lives, personal and social. With numerous real-life examples plus references to current sociological studies, the chapters address both modern challenges to and biblical and traditional resources for the celebration of sacramental rites today.
