The higher prices, combined with only modest increases in production costs, are expected to improve returns to producers. Egg output during March November is expected to trail last year, possibly by 1 percent. The size of the lay ing flock may remain smaller than a year ago, because the number Of replacement pullets has been below a year earlier. Also, the laying flock is older, and more hens have been force molted than a year ago, and this could hold down the rate of lay. Prices for cartoned large eggs in New York averaged 78 cents a dozen during December February, up from 76 cents last year. Prices in the second quarter averaged slightly above last year's 70 cents. However, rising production costs will about offset these price increases. Turkey and broiler production is likely to exceed last year's levels, while egg production may be about the same. Egg production in 1981 will probably continue about the same as last year. Following negative returns most of last year, the number of young pullets to entering the laying flock continues to trail 1980 levels, and the aver age age of the laying flock is older. Producers will prob ably keep old hens in the flock, to maintain output. Egg production in the first quarter may be down 1 percent from last year, because of one less production day in February, but second quarter production may equal april-june 1980. February egg prices in New York averaged about 71 cents per dozen, 10 cents below December, but 11 cents above February a year ago. Prices may average 72-74 cents for the entire quarter. Prices usually weaken in the spring. However, reduced supplies of meat may limit the decline this year. Egg prices during april-june may hold near first quarter levels. Prices of' eggs were at the lowest level since 1931] and prices of chickens were lower than at any time since the winter of 1937. The lower prices this year than last reflect chiefly larger seasonal marketings of chickens and eggs and larger storage stocks of these products. A recent supporting factor to eggrprices has been the purchase of cars of eggs by the Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation for relief distribution. The feed egg price ratio continues much less favorable for farmers than a year earlier. Receipts of eggs at the four markets New York, Chicagp, Philadelphia and Boston have been declining seasonally but continue above last year. Since late May, combined storage holdings of shell and frozen eggs have been above last year. By August 1 holdings may be 5 to 10 percent larger than on that date last year. The number of chickens from this year's hatchings in farm flocks on June 1 was about 3 percent larger than on that date in 1938 as compared with 5 percent above last year on May 1. On the basis of past relationships be tween changes in numbers of chickens on January 1 and changes in number of chicks and young chickens the preceding June 1, the size of laying flocks on January 1, 19110 may be little if any larger than'in i939. The expected expansion of the industry in 1959 may lead to some temporary contraction of production in 1940. Unless unfavorable conditions intervene, however, the swing of production over the next 4 or 5 years is likely to be upward from.the relatively low levels of the past several seasons. The high point in numbers of chickens on farms, around 475 millions, was reached in 1928. Since that time numbers have declined to about 587 millions in 1958 due to droughts and disturbing economic conditions. In view of the volume of production of the poultry industry at its peak in 1928, it seems reasonable to expect some re-expansion over the next few years. While the increase in population over the past decade would require some increase in average production if per capita consumption is to be maintained, the trend toward increased efficiency of layers has been such that former levels of pro duction can be attained with fewer birds.
