Book excerpt: Roman pottery, defined for convenience as that made and used within Italy and the Roman provinces between about 100 BC and AD 600, can be characterized by a group of stylistic and technical developments which built upon those of the Hellenistic Greeks and then led to those of the Byzantine and Islamic worlds. Download or read book A Corpus of Roman Pottery from Lincoln written by Barbara Precious and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2014-01-31 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major analysis of the Roman pottery from excavations in Lincoln (comprising more than 150,000 sherds). The pottery is presented in seven major ware groups. Fine wares include a modest range of imports and are dominated by Nene Valley products. Oxidised wares are mostly local products with a few imports as are the shell- and calcite-tempered wares and reduced wares. The final three are the standard specialised wares: mortaria, mostly of German and Mancetter-Hartshill manufacture; amphorae (80% Spanish Dressel 20) and samian, mostly from Les Martres/Lezoux and 75% undecorated! The discussion explores the chronological range of the entire ceramic assemblage across the three discrete parts of the Roman fortress and later colonia.

Book Synopsis How Things Make History by : Astrid van Oyen
Download or read book How Things Make History written by Astrid van Oyen and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-06 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bright red terra sigillata pots dating to the first three centuries CE can be found throughout the Western Roman provinces. The pots' widespread distribution and recognisability make them key evidence in the effort to reconstruct the Roman Empire's economy and society. Drawing on recent ideas in material culture, this book asks a radically new question: what was it about the pots themselves that allowed them to travel so widely and be integrated so quickly into a range of contexts and practices? To answer this question, Van Oyen offers a fresh analysis in which objects are no longer passive props, but rather they actively shape historical trajectories.
