Book Synopsis Use of a Two-dimensional Flow Model to Quantify Aquatic Habitat by : D. Michael Gee
Download or read book Use of a Two-dimensional Flow Model to Quantify Aquatic Habitat written by D. Michael Gee and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the impacts of potential hydropower retrofits on downstream flow distributions at Lock and Dam No. 8 on the upper Mississippi River. The model used solves the complete Reynolds equations for two-dimensional free-surface flow in the horizontal plane using a finite element solution scheme. RMA-2 has been in continuing use and development at the Hydrologic Engineering Center and elsewhere for the past decade. Although designed primarily for the simulation of hydraulic conditions, RMA-2 may be used in conjunction with related numerical models to simulate sediment transport and water quality. In this study, velocity distributions were evaluated with regard to environmental, navigational and small-boat safety considerations. Aquatic habitat was defined by depth, substrate type and current velocity. Habitat types were quantified by measuring the areas between calculated contours of velocity magnitude (isotachs) for existing and project conditions. The capability for computing and displaying isotachs for the depth-average velocity, velocity one foot from the bottom and near the water surface was developed for this study. The product of this study effort is an application of the RMA-2 model that allows prediction of structural aquatic habitat in hydraulicaly complex locations. Elements of the instream flow group methodology could be incorporated to provide detailed predictions of impacts to habitat quality. Calibration of the numerical model to field measurements of velocity magnitude and direction is also described.

Book Synopsis Determination of Land Use from Satellite Imagery for Input to Hydrologic Models by : Robert P. Webb
Download or read book Determination of Land Use from Satellite Imagery for Input to Hydrologic Models written by Robert P. Webb and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A land use/land cover identification methodology using LANDSAT imagery has been applied to six watersheds across the U.S. The land use information is stored in a grid cell data bank and is the basis for calibration of hydrologic parameters for watershed models. Flood frequency studies have been completed on four of the watersheds with land use derived from both satellite data and conventional low altitude aerial photography. This paper discusses our experience using the LANDSAT land use classification procedure and compares hydrologic results obtained from the alternative determinations of land use. (Author).

Book Synopsis Development of Generalized Free Surface Flow Models Using Finite Element Techniques by : D. Michael Gee
Download or read book Development of Generalized Free Surface Flow Models Using Finite Element Techniques written by D. Michael Gee and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two finite element hydrodynamic models, one for two-dimensional free surface flow in the horizontal plane and one for the vertical plane are being evaluated. Although the models are formulated to solve dynamic flow problems, all work to date has been with steady state solutions. Recent research has focused on mass continuity performance of the models, proper boundary condition specification, and comparison with finite difference techniques. The objective of this research is to develop generalized mathematical models for routine use by the engineering community. This paper presents recent results of evaluation and application of the models. (Author).

Download or read book Flood Damage Assessments Using Spatial Data Management Techniques written by Darryl W. Davis and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center has developed techniques that perform the spatial data analysis approach and individual structure approach and work is near completion on an integrated analysis package. The capability therefore exists to perform damage appraisals in a manner that encourages a general geographic and land use approach (thus greatly facilitating the study of nonstructural measures) while preserving the ability to analyze individual, unique structures should the need arise. This paper discusses the basic concepts of a spatial data management approach to damage appraisals and highlight(s) its integrated use with more traditional individual structure approaches. Selected example results are presented"--Page 2
