Book excerpt: Excerpt from Postage Stamps as Propaganda In recent years I have been particularly struck by the rapidly increasing tendency to use postage stamps for propaganda pur poses. To my good fortune, my duties in the Philatelic Division of the Pan American Union and my graduate studies at George town University have afforded me excellent opportunities for delving into many facets of this subject. I am exceedingly grateful to Mr. Albert F. Kunze, Chief of the Philatelic Division of the Pan American Union, and Dr. James B. Atkinson, acting head of the Department of Political Science at Georgetown University, for their interest in this connection. While I have benefited by the encouragement of both Mr. Kunze and Dr. Atkinson, it need hardly be pointed out that the views expressed in this monograph are my own and do not in any way reflect the official policies of either the Pan American Union or George town University. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Postage Stamps of the United States As has been previously remarked, the introduction of adhesive postage stamps in Europe was followed by a demand for similar conveniences in this country. Tut the Government was slow to accede to popular wishes and did not yield until the example had been set by the local posts and by issues of a semi-private nature on the part of certain postmasters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly sixty years after the end of World War II the Third Reich continues to fascinate both authors and readers. Nazi propaganda, in particular, has been the topic of countless books, as have the personalities involved in the German propaganda machine. Yet, despite all of the efforts in this regard, one aspect of that propaganda study has remained largely unexamined. It is the regimes use of postal materials as a tool for expressing its propaganda message. In this new, profusely illustrated book, Albert L. Moore offers readers an overview of the images and messages that filled the mailboxes of Hitlers subjects and victims. As official documents of Nazi Germany, the stamps, postcards, and even postmarks used during the time provide the reader with an explicit picture of the types of propaganda messages every German was expected to see and act upon on a daily basis. Moores groundbreaking work helps us to better understand this powerful, yet heretofore unrecognized, weapon in Hitlers propaganda arsenal. This is not merely a book for those interested in stamps or postcards as collectibles, it is a book for those who desire to better understand what it was like to live inside the Third Reich!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Postage Stamps and Their Collection, Vol. 1 Of the many advantages to be derived from a hobby of some sort it seems hardly necessary to speak, but a few words may be said on the hobby of stamp collecting, which by many, nowadays, has been reduced to a science. Intelligent collecting of anything - stamps, coins, books, objects of art, or the like - is to be commended, whether a man confines himself by force of circumstances or choice, to a limited field, or whether he feels at liberty and induced to cover a larger territory. And this commendation of stamp collecting is due not only because of the solace and enjoyment that it gives a man, tired by the days duties, but also to the increase in knowledge of history, geography, and politics, which march hand in hand with his increasing interest in the technical side of his subject. On the other side, there are two kinds of collecting to be deprecated; the mere striving for numbers or amount; and the purchase of stamps from a purely mercenary point of view. Of the special school to be followed in collecting stamps, each collector must take his own choice, being governed by his means and desires. However, it is safe to say that he is a courageous man who, today, starts out to make a general collection of stamps from the first, even along narrow lines. Specializing is becoming, if it has not already become, the order of the day, and in stamp collecting this is almost inevitable to a greater or lesser degree. From the mere law of supply and demand, this specializing is obviously bound to increase as time goes on. To the stamp collecting public commendation of this little book and its author seems almost superfluous. As a close student of stamps for many years, not only in business, but as a collector, Mr. Colson is admirably fitted to write on die subject he has chosen. It is a pleasure to wish him and his book the success that both deserve. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adhesive Postage Stamps of Europe, Vol. 2: A Practical Guide to Their Collection, Identification, and Classification; Especially Designed for the Use of Those Commencing the Study This, the latest work of one of the most accomplished, and certainly the most sound of philatelic writers, is a worthy monument to his memory. In it he has popularised the subject he treats of, while the advanced specialist will find indubitable proofs of the master hand that, alas! Will no more instruct and delight. Of the many services to the science rendered by him, none is more noticeable than the present work, in which the fruit of his long experience, and the results of his matured judgment, are placed before the student with all the author's accustomed perspicuity and skill. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Postage Stamps, Envelopes, Wrappers, and Posts Cards of the North American Colonies of Great Britain: With Autotype Illustrations Reference Lists of the North American Colonies have nevertheless been hitherto crude, as well as deficient, and even incorrect in detail, thus affording but superficial aid to the Philatelist: and the endeavour of the Society in the following pages has been to amplify the information at present in the possession of collectors; and by the collation of contents of recent papers in Canadian and English journals, as well as by reference to official gazettes and correspondence, to present as far as possible a complete history of the Postal Service in these Colonies. In this endeavour it has derived a large amount of assistance from the researches of its late Secretary, Mr. E. D. Bacon, whose Notes at the head of each Colony were originally intended to have been read as a paper before the London Society, but which, by the desire of the Committee entrusted with the revision and publication of the accompanying lists, he has consented should be amalgamated with them, thus adding to the completeness of the present work. The Society is also largely indebted to Mr. Donald A. King for the permission to reproduce the valuable contents of certain papers he contributed to the Halifax Philatelist. The lists of Canada and Newfoundland, the only two of the Colonies now using distinct stamps, have been completed to the end of June, 1889. Book excerpt: This thesis hopes to bridge the gap between philately and history and examines how postage stamps issued by the Third Reich during the Second World War portrayed their colonial and racial policy in the Netherlands and Poland. Through my research where I examine Nazi primary source documents and rely on an expansive discourse community whose focus is communications theory, postal history, and colonial history, I focus on how these stamps were an extension of the Reich's Ministry for Propaganda. Dutch stamps closely align with German-issued stamps from the same period, through the depiction of hypermasculine men in a rural setting while Polish stamps help to reflect the power dynamic that the Nazis instilled through their brutal occupation. This thesis further encourages historians to develop a new field of postal history, as it accurately can show the effects that regime change has on society.
