Book Synopsis Yves Congar's Vision of the Church in a World of Unbelief by : Gabriel Flynn
Download or read book Yves Congar's Vision of the Church in a World of Unbelief written by Gabriel Flynn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yves Congar (1904-1995) was one of the chief architects of a remarkable renewal in Roman Catholic ecclesiology in the twentieth century. His vision for ecclesial renewal led to a profound transformation of the Roman Catholic Church, its relationship with other churches and the world. This book considers the contribution made by Congar to that transformation. Situating Congar’s ecclesiology in the context of his whole theology, the book presents for the first time a comprehensive study of two related aspects of Congar's thought - unbelief and the notion of 'total ecclesiology'. Dr Flynn shows how unbelief provides the common inspiration for Congar's thought on the Church and constitutes the raison d’être for his entire programme of ecclesial reform at the Second Vatican Council. This study demonstrates how Congar's 'total ecclesiology' contributes to the restoration of unity and helps to redress unbelief. Congar's vision for the future and his programme for ecclesial renewal, centering on a church committed both to the preservation of its heritage and an openness to true reform, is shown to be still pertinent to the churches in the third millennium, a point accented by Pierre-Marie Gy, OP in his Preface to the work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Dedicated to God written by Abbie Reese and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second decade of the twenty-first century, Catholicism appears under siege. Reporters fixate on drama-accusations, investigations, the selection of a new pope. They ignore the inner story, the very reason why the church has survived from the Roman Empire's persecution through Renaissance splendor to the present day. This is the story of a search for truth, peace, and salvation, a story of selfless dedication that continues behind monastic walls even in our time. In Dedicated to God, Abbie Reese opens a window onto the Corpus Christi Monastery of the Poor Clare Colettine Order, a community of cloistered monastic nuns living within a 25,000-square foot enclosure near Rockford, Illinois. It is a world apart from our noisy, digital, hyper-connected world, a world of poverty, simplicity, and prayer. These women have surrendered everything-their names, shoes, even their families. They disappear from the larger world; when one dies, the order marks her grave with a simple stone indicating religious name and death date, nothing more. While they live, they pray five times a day at the Liturgy of the Hours for the victims of catastrophes and personal tragedies around the globe. The author spent six years learning their individual stories and the ancient rules they have chosen to live by. Reese makes that choice understandable, showing how each nun's values led her there, even if families were sometimes befuddled (one great-niece calls the monastery "the Jesus cage"). With an eye for complexity, Reese ranges from the challenges individuals face (she calls one "the claustrophobic nun") to the uncomprehending society that threatens this place with extinction.
Book Synopsis Catholic Schools and the Interests of the Poor by : Maria Ugonna Rita Igbo
Download or read book Catholic Schools and the Interests of the Poor written by Maria Ugonna Rita Igbo and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-10-26 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration behind this book emanated from earlier doctoral research that focused on the preferential option for the poor. Subsequent reflections focused more on the idea of religious schools subsidizing fees for poor children. The question is, How can the schools get the funding to offer free education or subsidize fees for the children? How does this reflect on each school’s mission integrity? These questions have preoccupied the thoughts of the author for a long period. The Catholic schools in Nigeria are categorized as private schools and are perceived to be expensive. However, people who have these views can hardly understand that most Catholic schools in Nigeria do not receive subsidies from the government at all levels, in contrast to the schools in countries such as Belgium, Germany, New Zealand, the Netherlands, England, Scotland, and Ireland, where Catholic schools receive significant support from public funds. The argument for the high fees is that lay teachers have to be well paid to enable them to function effectively and selflessly. There is also the need for an efficient supply of quality educational facilities and maintenance of school infrastructure. Therefore, if Catholic schools are expensive, the Church will be failing in its duty to offer educational services to the poor and to those who suffer from deprivation. These issues have been carefully analysed and dealt with in this book, and some suggestions are proffered that can help the schools to maintain their mission integrity in dealing with the principle of the preferential option for the poor. This book beseeches Catholic school board members, other Christian denominations and religious organizations, non-governmental organizations, philanthropists, individuals, and other interested parties to come to the aid of the poor by using education as an instrument.

Book Synopsis Life and Holiness by : Thomas Merton
Download or read book Life and Holiness written by Thomas Merton and published by Colchis Books. This book was released on with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is intended to be a very simple book, an elementary treatment of a few basic ideas in Christian spirituality. Hence it should be useful to any Christian, and indeed to anyone who wants to acquaint himself with some principles of the interior life as it is understood in the Catholic Church. Nothing is here said of such subjects as “contemplation” or even “mental prayer.” And yet the book emphasizes what is at once the most common and the most mysterious aspect in the Christian life: grace, the power and the light of God in us, purifying our hearts, transforming us in Christ, making us true sons of God, enabling us to act in the world as his instruments for the good of all men and for his glory. This is therefore a meditation on some fundamental themes appropriate to the active life. It must be said at once that the active life is essential to every Christian. Clearly the active life must mean more than the life which is led in religious institutes of men and women who teach, care for the sick, and so on. (When one is talking of the “active life” as opposed to the “contemplative life,” this is the usual reference.) Here action is not looked at in opposition to contemplation, but as an expression of charity and as a necessary consequence of union with God by baptism.
