Book Synopsis Butte by : Ken Hamlin and Terry and Martha Lonner
Download or read book Butte written by Ken Hamlin and Terry and Martha Lonner and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Butte, Montana, began in 1864 as a small placer gold mining camp. By 1870, the placer deposits were depleted, and most miners left. A few remaining miners found significant silver ore in the nearby quartz lodes, but by the late 1870s, copper was the major ore in the district, and Butte became The Richest Hill on Earth. Thousands of immigrants came to Butte from throughout Europe to operate the underground mines, and the city grew to an unofficial estimate of about 90,000 residents in 1917-1918. The population of Butte slowly declined to about 35,000 residents when fewer miners were necessary after open-pit mining began in 1955. Today, Butte remains a city of great character and cultural diversity. The postcards in this book illustrate some of its history.
Book Synopsis Hidden History of Helena, Montana by : Ellen Baumler and Jon Axline
Download or read book Hidden History of Helena, Montana written by Ellen Baumler and Jon Axline and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinguished by statesmen and magnates, Helena's history is colored with many other compelling characters and episodes nearly lost to time. Before achieving eminence in Deadwood, Sheriff Seth Bullock oversaw Montana Territory's first two legal hangings. The Seven Mile House was an oasis of vice for the parched, weary travelers entering the valley on the Benton Road, despite a tumultuous succession of ownership. The heritage of the Sieban Ranch and the saga of "King Kong" Clayton, "the Joe Louis of the Mat," faded from public memory. From unraveling the myths of Chinatown to detailing the lives of red-light businesswomen and the Canyon Ferry flying saucer hoax, revered local historians Ellen Baumler and Jon Axline team up to preserve a compendium of Helena's yesteryear.

Download or read book Prescott written by Raymond E. Miller and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-20 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prescott was founded in 1864 as the territorial capital of Arizona. In 1900, the business center burned to the ground, but the courthouse in the town square was saved, and the burned-out areas former wooden buildings were replaced by brick structures. Because the closest interstate highway is more than 30 miles away, much of Prescotts history and sense of community have been preserved, and historical districts abound. The local chamber of commerce refers to Prescott as Everybodys Hometown. It is also known as the Christmas City of Arizona and holds an annual Christmas parade, with appropriate courthouse lighting.

Book Synopsis Vintage Postcards of New York by : Silvia Lucchini
Download or read book Vintage Postcards of New York written by Silvia Lucchini and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A delightful collection of vintage and antique postcards of New York. This book presents a rare collection of more than 100 of the best vintage New York City postcards, providing a snapshot of how much the Big Apple has changed—and how much has remained recognizably the same. During the early years of the twentieth century, postcard photographers traveled the length and breadth of Manhattan snapping images and documenting landmarks and important new architectural masterpieces, such as the Singer Building (1908), the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower (1909), and the Woolworth Building (1913)—each of which succeeded the other as the world’s tallest building at the time of their respective completion. Also celebrated were the engineering feats of the Brooklyn Bridge and the elevated trains and early subway, as well as popular amusements such as the original Madison Square Garden and the Hippodrome, which occupied an entire city block at Longacre Square—since renamed Times Square. Scenic views of the city from a distance were equally popular—and in fact led to the coining of the word "skyline" in 1896. This charming keepsake volume is the perfect souvenir for architecture and history buffs and makes a wonderful gift.
Download or read book Paris Postcards written by Leonard Pitt and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this stunning volume of historic postcards featuring the City of Light, Leonard Pitt takes us deep into the art and heart of the postcard and Paris itself. Showcasing the variety of images from his personal collection, the postcards create an enduring time capsule, one that reveals a Paris that no longer exists. The invention of the postcard in the 19th century revolutionized communication and created the original social networking tool: At the height of their popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, France was producing a million postcards a day, and collecting became a craze that spread around the world. The postcards here reveal the true artwork of the original medium, from hand-tinting techniques to nostalgic details too small to see with the naked eye: Sandwich-board men asleep on park benches, a cheese vendor eyeing a woman passerby. The messages penned to loved ones back home are perhaps the most delightful gems: “Bringing your wife to Paris is like bringing a meal to a banquet,” quips one traveler. In its colorful entirety, Paris Postcards offers an addictively voyeuristic slice of the American experience of Paris in the early 20th century.
Download or read book Mining Childhood written by Janet L. Finn and published by Farcountry Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining Childhood offers a fresh perspective on Montana history. Drawing from a broad range of archival materials and oral histories, the book offers a child’s-eye view of key events in Butte’s history and considers how social, political, and economic forces shaping life in Butte left their marks on children. With its rich stories, the book captures children’s experiences of school, play, and work by exploring their joys and miseries, their keen impressions of life in Butte, and the varied lessons learned. These stories illuminate the meaning and purpose of mining life in Butte: people came in search of a better life for themselves, and they stayed and struggled in order to build a better life for their sons and daughters—living with the hardships and dangers of mining life so that their children might have a life beyond mining. Children were, quite simply, Butte’s reason to be.
