Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports on the final measurement of the flavor-mixing phase in decays of strange-bottom mesons (B_s) into J/psi and phi mesons performed in high-energy proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the Collider Experiment at Fermilab. Interference occurs between direct decays and decays following virtual particle-antiparticle transitions (B_s-antiB_s). The phase difference between transition amplitudes (“mixing phase”) is observable and extremely sensitive to contributions from non-standard-model particles or interactions that may be very hard to detect otherwise – a fact that makes the precise measurement of the B_s mixing phase one of the most important goals of particle physics. The results presented include a precise determination of the mixing phase and a suite of other important supplementary results. All measurements are among the most precise available from a single experiment and provide significantly improved constraints on the phenomenology of new particles and interactions.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present a measurement of relative partial widths and decay rate CP asymmetries in K−K and?−?+ decays of D° mesons produced in p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV. They use a sample of 2 x 105 D*+ → D°?+ (and charge conjugate) decays with the D° decaying to K−?+, K−K+, and?−?+, corresponding to 123 pb−1 of data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. No significant direct CP violation is observed, they measure?(D° → K−K+)/?(D° → K−?+) = 0.0992 ± 0.0011 ± 0.0012,?(D° →?−?+)/?(D° → K−?+) = 0.03594 ± 0.00054 ± 0.00040,?(D° → K−K+)/?(D° →?−?+) = 2.760 ± 0.040 ± 0.034, A{sub CP} (K−K+) = (2.0 ± 1.2 ± 0.6)%, and A{sub CP}(?−?+) = (1.0 ± 1.3 ± 0.6)%, where, in all cases, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fermilab experiments E731, E773, E799, and E832 are a series of experiments to investigate the physics of CP violation, CPT violation, and rare decays of the neutral kaon system. E731 finished data taking in 1988, during past year the full data set analysis was completed and yielded ([var epsilon][prime]/[var epsilon])[sub 2[pi]]=(7.4 [plus minus] 5.2 [stat] [plus minus] 2.9 [syst]) [times] 10[sup [minus]4] . The value favors a high top ark mass value within the Standard Model. E773 tests CPT violation by determining ([Delta][phi])[sub 2[pi]] with an accuracy of about 0.5[sup 0]. Data were taken during the last Fermilab Fixed Target run period between September and November 1991. It is anticipated the data analysis will be finished within a year. E799, with the primary goal of observing direct Cp Violation via searching for the rare decay K[sub L][yields] [pi][sup 0] l [sup +]l[sup [minus]] (where l = e, [mu] [nu]) took test data between November 1991 and January 1992 (Phase 1). Some preliminary results are shown here. E799 (Phase II) and E832 (a follow up experiment of E731) are scheduled to take data after the current Fermilab collider run with a new facility and detector.

Book Synopsis Measurement of the Branching Fraction And Search for Direct CP-Violation in the B+- --] J/Psi Pi+- Decay Mode at BaBar by : Francesco Fobozzi

This book was released on 2006 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of CP-violation in weak interactions, discovered in 1964 in decays of neutral kaons, receives a simple and elegant explanation in the Standard Model with three generations of quarks. Indeed, in this model the common source of CP-asymmetry phenomena is represented by a simple complex phase in the unitary matrix (the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix) describing the charged weak couplings of the quarks. This simple scheme has never received an accurate validation, because the phenomenological parameters determined from measurements of CP-violation in kaons decays are related to the fundamental parameters of the theory in a complex way, sensitive to large theoretical uncertainties. On the contrary, decays of neutral B mesons like B{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi} K{sub S}{sup 0} represent a unique laboratory to test the predictions of the theory because they are expected to show significant CP-violation effects, the magnitude of which is cleanly related to the Standard Model parameters. Thus experimental facilities have been built with the purpose of performing extensive studies of B decays. The BABAR experiment is operating at one of these facilities, at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. It is collecting data at the PEP-II asymmetric e{sup +}e{sup -} collider (E{sub e{sup -}} = 9.0 GeV; E{sub e{sup +}} = 3.1 GeV), a high-luminosity accelerator machine (L = 3 x 10{sup 33} cm{sup -2}s{sup -1}). The center-of-mass energy (10.58 GeV) of the e{sup +}e{sup -} system at PEP-II allows resonant production of the {Upsilon}(4S), a b{bar b} bound state, which decays almost exclusively in a B{sup 0}{bar B}{sup 0} or a B{sup +}B{sup -} pair. A high-acceptance detector, projected and built by a wide international collaboration, detects and characterizes the decay products of the B mesons. From the analysis of the data collected during the first two years of operation, the BABAR collaboration has established CP-violation in decays of neutral B mesons at the 4.1{sigma} level. Besides the primary goal of CP-violation studies, the high luminosity of PEP-II, coupled with the high acceptance of the BABAR detector, allows competitive studies of the properties of a wide set of B decay modes. In particular, measurements of non-leptonic decays are extremely useful to understand the dynamics of the non-perturbative strong interactions involved in these processes. In this thesis a study of the non-leptonic decay mode B{sup {+-}} {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup {+-}} is presented.
Book Synopsis Observation of Direct CP Violation in B° --] Kpi− Decays by :
Download or read book Observation of Direct CP Violation in B° --] Kpi− Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present an updated search for direct CP violation in the decay B° --> Kpi−. Using 227 million [Upsilon](4S) --> B{bar B} decays collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy Ee− collider at SLAC, the authors observe a total signal yield of n(K-pi+) + n(K+pi−) = 1606 ± 51 decays and measure the asymmetry [n(K−pi+)-n(K+pi−)]/[n(K−pi+)+n(K+pi−)] = 0.133 ± 0.030(stat) ± 0.009(syst). This measurement establishes direct CP violation in the B° meson system at the level of 4.2 standard deviations.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the measurement of the direct CP violation in the b → sc$\bar{c}$ transition using the decay B+ → J/[Psi]K+, and in the b → dc$\bar{c}$ transition using the decay B+ → J/[Psi][pi]+. The decays of B+ mesons are reconstructed in approximately 2.8 fb-1 of data recorded by D0 detector in 2002-2007 during Run II of Fermilab Tevatron collider. Using the unbinned likelihood fit, a signal of 40,222 ± 242 of B+ → J/[Psi]K+ and 1,578 ± 119 of B+ → J/[Psi][pi]+ events is obtained. The corresponding direct CP violation asymmetries are measured to be ACP(B+ → J/[Psi](1S)K+) = +0.0077 ± 0.0061(stat.) ± 0.0027(syst.), and ACP(B+ → J/[Psi](1S)[pi]+) = - 0.089 ± 0.081(stat.) ± 0.028(syst.). The result on ACP (B+ → J/[Psi](1S)K+) is consistent with the 2007 world average and is the most precise measurement of this asymmetry, with uncertainty approaching the level of the Standard Model prediction. The result on ACP (B+ → J/[Psi](1S)[pi]+) constitutes the first measurement of this asymmetry at the hadron collider, with uncertainty at the level of the 2007 world average. The measurement presented in this thesis has become possible due to the sophisticated online and offline tracking/vertexing implemented at D0, and the regular reversal of the polarities of the D0 detector magnets.
Book Synopsis Polarization and CP Violation Measurements by : Michael Prim
Download or read book Polarization and CP Violation Measurements written by Michael Prim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-03-28 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the thorough analysis of the rare B meson decay into φ K* on data taken by the Belle Collaboration at the B-meson-factory KEKB over 10 years. This reaction is very interesting, because it in principle allows the observation of CP-violation effects. In the Standard Model however, no CP violation in this reaction is expected. An observation of CP asymmetries thus immediately implies new physics. This thesis presents an amplitude analysis of this decay and the search for CP violation in detail and discusses methods to solve related problems: The quantification of multivariate dependence and the improvement of numeric evaluation speed of normalization integrals in amplitude analysis. In addition it provides an overview of the theory, experimental setup, (blind) statistical data analysis and estimation of systematic uncertainties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We search for CP violation in a sample of 4.7 x 104 Cabibbo suppressed D° → KK−?+?− decays. We use 470 fb−1 of data recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e− storage rings running at center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV. CP violation is searched for in the difference between the T-odd asymmetries, obtained using triple product correlations, measured for D° and {bar D}° decays. The measured CP violation parameter is A{sub T} = (1.0 ± 5.1{sub stat} ± 4.4{sub syst}) x 10−3.
Book Synopsis Searches for New Physics in CP Violation from BaBar by :
Download or read book Searches for New Physics in CP Violation from BaBar written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of recent searches for new physics in CP violation in charm decays from the BABAR experiment are presented. These results include a measurement of D0 - anti D0 mixing and searches for CP violation in two-body D0 decays, a search for CP violation in the charm decays D" 2!KS0K " and D s" 2!KS0K", KS0[pi]", and a search for direct CP violation in the singly-Cabibbo suppressed D" 2!K+K-[pi]"decays. These studies are based on the fi nal dataset collected by BABAR at the PEP-II B factory at SLAC in the period 1999-2008. No evidence of CP violation is found in these charm decays. The measured mixing parameter yCP = [0.72 " 0.18(stat) " 0.12(syst)]% excludes the no-mixing null hypothesis with a signifi cance of 3.3[sigma].

This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present results for a time-dependent Dalitz plot measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in the mode B^0 --> pi^+ pi^- pi^0, dominated by B^0 --> rho^\pm pi^\mp (rho^\pm --> pi^\pm pi^0) decays. Our dataset is derived from the complete sample of 471 x 10^6 B-Bbar meson pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, operating on the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We extract parameters describing the time-dependent B^0 --> rho pi decay probabilities and CP asymmetries, including C, DeltaC, S, and DeltaS, finding these measurements to be consistent with the results of previous analyses. Additionally, we present a two-dimensional likelihood scan of the direct CP-violation asymmetry parameters for B^0 --> rho^\pm pi^\mp decays, finding the results to be consistent with direct CP violation at ~ 2 sigma significance. Finally, we present information on the CP-violating parameter alpha, corresponding to an angle in the unitarity triangle associated with the CKM quark-mixing matrix. We perform a likelihood scan of alpha that incorporates constraints from B^\pm --> rho pi measurements by means of isospin relationships. A robustness study assessing the reliability with which alpha is extracted provides important insights into the interpretation of this result.
