Download or read book Positron Annihilation written by A.T. Steward and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positron Annihilation focuses on the process of positron annihilation in different environments. Partitioned into two parts with 42 chapters, the book contains the contributions of authors who have done research on the annihilation of positrons, which brought about valuable information on the properties of matter. The first part of the book deals with lengthy review articles, including a survey of the physics of positron annihilation; positron annihilation in metals and the theory involved in the process; and positron annihilation in alkali halides and ionic crystals. Positronium formation and interaction in gases, molecular substances, and ionic crystals are also given attention. Gaseous positronics and positron annihilation in condensed gases and liquids are also discussed. The second part of the book focuses on developments on positron annihilation and the direction of research on this field. The studies concentrate on positron annihilation in various crystals, metals, mercury, liquefied gases, helium, and metal oxides. Numerical representations and analyses are presented to support the processes involved. The book can best serve the interest of those who want to explore further the annihilation of positrons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of positron annihilation in metals, including electron-positron and electron-electron interaction, is discussed. It is well-known that the Coulomb force of the positron causes very major changes in the motion of the electrons. It is established that a sharp 'break' in the angular correlation curve of the two gamma-rays resulting from singlet state annihilation occurs at precisely those angles where it should be expected in the absence of electron-positron interaction. This makes positron annihilation in metals a useful tool for the investigation of the true Fermi surface. Taking advantage of such a break in the angular correlation curve, a simple experiment is proposed to measure the effective mass of the positron in metals. The experiment consists in a study of the temperature dependence of the angular correlation curve. It is found that an electron-positron bound state or a positronium-like state does not exist in metals. A more general result is derived: in a noninteracting electron gas in the presence of a localised external potential, there is no sharp distinction between bound and unbound states. (Author).

Download or read book The Possible Existence of a Quasi-bound State of a Positron in an Electron Gas written by Alan. E. Held and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Positrons can be used as a probe in the investigation of metals. We intend here to investigate one aspect of their use. We will develop a theoretical description of the interaction of one positron with a sea of electrons. Then with the use of this model we will investigate the possible existence of a quasi-bound state of the positron. Most investigations into annihilation of positrons ignore the possibility of the formation of a quasi-bound state and it's effect on positron lifetime. It is assumed that; a positron introduced into the 'electron gas' will be annihilated from a scattering state." --
