Book Synopsis What About Us? Global Perspectives on Redressing Religious Inequalities by : Mariz Tadros
Download or read book What About Us? Global Perspectives on Redressing Religious Inequalities written by Mariz Tadros and published by Institute of Development Studies. This book was released on 2022-10-26 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we make religious equality a reality for those on the margins of society and politics? This book is about the individual and collective struggles of the religiously marginalised to be recognised and their inequalities, religious or otherwise, redressed. It is also about the efforts of civil society, governments, multilateral actors, and scholars to promote freedom of religion or belief whatever shape they take. The actors and contexts that feature in this book are as diverse as health workers in Israel, local education authorities in Nigeria, indigenous movements in India, Uganda, or South Africa, and multilateral actors such as the Islamic Development Bank in Sudan and the World Bank in Pakistan. Some of the case studies engage with development discourses and narratives or are undertaken by development actors, while other cases operate completely outside the international development paradigm. These case studies present some important insights, which while highly relevant for their contexts also draw out important insights for academics, practitioners, activists, and others who have an interest in redressing religious inequalities for socioeconomically marginalised populations.

Book Synopsis We Need to Talk About Defence by : Andrew Curtis
Download or read book We Need to Talk About Defence written by Andrew Curtis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-19 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a distinguished 35-year career in the RAF as an Air Commodore, Andrew R. Curtis highlights what is wrong with the way defence is managed today, and presents evidence-based proposals to fix it. Defence is failing to deliver. From the ability of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to develop defence policy, to the single service's - Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force (RAF) - ability to acquire and maintain military capability, and undertake military operations. This is not a new problem; indeed, ever since the creation of the MoD in 1964, there have been tensions between the department of state and the armed forces over allocations of responsibility, authority and accountability. Concerned with political oversight; the allocation of responsibility, authority, and accountability; administration of people; organisational structures; and policies and processes, Curtis compellingly demonstrates the critical need to reform the management of Defence for the UK's armed forces to fight and win in the future.

Download or read book Home written by Alison Blunt and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-05-30 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Home articulates a ‘critical geography of home’ in which home is understood as an emotive place and spatial imaginary that encompasses lived experiences of everyday, domestic life alongside a wider, and often contested, sense of being and belonging in the world. Engaging with the burgeoning cross-disciplinary interest in home since the first edition was published, this significantly revised and updated second edition contains new research boxes, illustrations, and contemporary examples throughout. It also adds a new chapter on ‘Home and the City’ that extends the scalar understanding of home to the urban. The book develops the conceptual and methodological underpinnings of a critical geography of home, drawing on key feminist, postcolonial, and housing thinkers as well as contemporary methodological currents in non-representational thinking and performance. The book’s chapters consider the making and unmaking of home across the domestic scale – house-as-home; the urban – city-as-home; national – nation-as-home; and homemaking in relation to transnational migration and diaspora. Each chapter includes illustrative examples from diverse geographical contexts and historical time periods. Chapters also address some of the key cross-cutting dimensions of home across these scales, including digital connectivity, art and performance, more-than-human constructions of home, and violence and dispossession. The book ends with a research agenda for home in a world of COVID-19. The book provides an understanding of home that has three intersecting dimensions: that material and imaginative geographies of home are closely intertwined; that home, power, and identity are intimately linked; and that geographies of home are multi-scalar. This framework, the examples used to illustrate it, and the intended audience of academics and students across the humanities and social sciences will together shape the field of home studies into the future.

Book Synopsis The South African Response to COVID-19 by : Pieter Fourie
Download or read book The South African Response to COVID-19 written by Pieter Fourie and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the first two years of South Africa’s response to the COVID-19 epidemic, from its emergence in early 2020. Drawing on the perspectives of a range of public health experts, economists and other social scientists, and development practitioners, this book argues that understanding this early response will be essential to moderate and improve future policy thinking around health governance and epidemic readiness. This book provides a systemic analysis of not only the epidemiological progression of COVID-19 in South Africa, but also the socio-political factors that will be key in determining the future of the country as a whole, including health system challenges, socio-economic disparities and inequalities, and variable (often contradictory and tardy) policy responses. Overall, this book exposes Manichean thinking and the spurious policy dichotomies that pitch public health against human rights, economic recovery against viral vector control, and science against ideology, with lessons not just for South Africa, but also for elsewhere on the African continent, and beyond. This book will be perfect for researchers and practitioners across Public Health, Health Policy, and Global Health, as well as those with an interest in South African politics and development more generally. Book Synopsis Blue Economy and Ocean Sustainable Development in a Globalised World: Social, Political, Economic and Environmental Issues by : Ibukun J. Adewumi
Download or read book Blue Economy and Ocean Sustainable Development in a Globalised World: Social, Political, Economic and Environmental Issues written by Ibukun J. Adewumi and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade, the concept of a Blue Economy has ignited a deep theoretical debate. Ranging from the integration of the triple bottom line of sustainability to the optimization of profit from ocean exploitation, the meaning of the term blue economy differs considerably between epistemic communities and even more so among national and regional policies. There is a general sense of the opportunity to realise enhanced social and economic benefits from the sustainable utilisation of their ocean and coastal resources under the umbrella framework of blue economy. Blue economy is gaining traction already as a significant component of national policies, even in spite of a clear conceptualization of the term. Many countries are now preparing national policies towards realising their blue economy ambitions, utilizing the concept as they see fit. Likewise, multilateral and regional organisations are developing guidelines, and providing investment in new research, technologies, and financing tools that promote blue economy. Critical challenges abound, in particular in less privileged countries. These include the gap in research capabilities, governments prioritizing social wellbeing and economic profit in contrast to environmental protection, the identification of new and emerging areas of ocean economic activity that are both socially and ecologically sustainable and holds viable business models that can attract private investment.
Book Synopsis Imposter Doctors by : Rebekah Bernard
Download or read book Imposter Doctors written by Rebekah Bernard and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you experience a medical emergency, you expect to be treated by a licensed physician with expertise in your condition. What happens when you look up from your hospital gurney to find that the doctor has been replaced by a non-physician practitioner with just a small fraction of the training and experience? From the co-author of Patients at Risk: The Rise of the Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant in Healthcare, the first book to warn of the systematic replacement of physicians, comes Imposter Doctors, an even more frightening exposé of patient endangerment at the hands of for-profit corporate entities and healthcare conglomerates. In the two years since Patients at Risk debuted, the employment of non-physician practitioners has continued to skyrocket. While advocates insist that nurse practitioners and physician assistants are ‘just as good’ as physicians, they are wrong. Despite over fifty years of scientific analysis, there is no conclusive evidence that non-physicians can provide safe and effective medical care without physician oversight. In fact, recent studies have shown the opposite: that the replacement of physicians puts patients at risk. The only cure for today’s healthcare crisis is for patients to become informed about who is providing their care. We must all know the difference in clinician education and training, and demand answers from those who would deprive us of physician-led care. REVIEWS and WORDS OF PRAISE This book is well-written, richly researched, and scientifically based. Imposter Doctors explains how scope expansion has been facilitated by the corporatization of American medicine, and exposes the fallacy of NP/PA and physician equivalency. It is a must-read for anyone concerned about our nation’s healthcare system. --Susan Rudd Bailey, MD, Past President American Medical Association Another frank and hard-hitting discussion from the author of Patients at Risk. While some will likely dismiss this book as aiming to protect the status quo in healthcare, I sincerely hope it creates important conversations about training, qualifications transparency, and public safety. --L Allen Dobson Jr, MD, FAAFP, Editor-in-Chief Medical Economics This follow-up book to Patients at Risk articulates the desperate need for reform to the healthcare system to re-insert physicians as the ultimate decision maker for the sake of patient care. After reading this book, one must ask "will a physician be available to care for me and my family when the need arises?" --Linda Lambert, FAAMSE
