These attorneys span the political spectrum from conservative Alexander Hamilton to liberal Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but each helped America grow and prosper. The United States grew from a weak confederation of states into a wealthy and powerful nation under our Constitutional form of government. However, America's success was not assured when the founding fathers met in Philadelphia to plan a new government. Modern America developed because the dynamic energy and creative intellect of Americans were guided by the enlightened leadership of talented leaders. The attorneys I describe applied their considerable talents during critical periods in American history to shape our Constitutional form of government, resolve the issues of slavery, preserve the Union, protect civil rights, and heal tribal divisions. I have always loved to write, even as a child. During my tenure at the University of California Berkeley, I planned to study medicine but found psychology to be my passion. My career has been in the fields of psychology and the law. For many years I was a psychology professor at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana and later at the University of California San Diego. While a professor, I authored several textbooks and research articles. During a transition period, I was a clinical psychologist for the U.S. Army and was assigned to Frankfort, Germany. My family and I enjoyed the opportunity to experience European culture while becoming friends with our German neighbors and visiting so many places during our stay. My daughter has often commented on how much she learned and saw during those years overseas. I decided to pursue a second career and attended Duke University School of Law. While in law school, I chose to specialize in Family Law and Estate Planning (wills and trusts). While I'm originally from California, I wanted to live in San Antonio, Texas, which has proven to be a wonderful choice: warm sunny winters, vibrant city life with Old World charm and great food. When I came to San Antonio, I was with a group law practice in family law and served as an expert witness in various litigated divorces. In the mid-1990s, the Texas Family Law Code changed allowing for collaborative divorces. As a psychologist, resolving divorces by collaboration appealed to me because litigated divorces are emotional damaging to spouses and their children. Collaborative divorce is a non-adversarial dispute resolution process where parties work together with their attorneys and other neutral professionals, to resolve disputes and come to an agreement without going to court. My practice is now entirely collaborative divorces, estate law (wills and trusts) and probate. I have continued to write. I write articles for the San Antonio Lawyer magazine and regular blogs for my website. In 2017 my book, Texas Divorce Guide was published. In 2019, my most recent book, The History of Marriage and Divorce: Everything You Need to Know was released. Both are available on Amazon. I am presently in the concluding stages of writing my 11th book about the history of inheritance law. When I'm not working with legal clients or writing, my favorite hobbies are reading, playing bridge, and hiking with my grandchildren. Kurland's approach to constitutional law was highlighted by his insistence on the relevance of legal history. Davis was an energetic comparativist in his work on administrative law. What distinguished these Chicagoans is that their work was practical and rooted in the law, and hence yielded concrete applications. The group's diversity, the tolerant atmosphere in which they taught and wrote, and the attachment of its individual members to empirical approaches differentiate them from today's legal scholars and make their ideas of continuing importance.

Horwitz offers a sweeping overview of the emergence of a national (and modern) legal system from English and colonial antecedents. He treats the evolution of the common law as intellectual history and also demonstrates how the shifting views of private law became a dynamic element in the economic growth of the United States. Horwitz's subtle and sophisticated explanation of societal change begins with the common law, which was intended to provide justice for all. The great breakpoint came after 1790 when the law was slowly transformed to favor economic growth and development. The courts spurred economic competition instead of circumscribing it. This new instrumental law flourished as the legal profession and the mercantile elite forged a mutually beneficial alliance to gain wealth and power. The evolving law of the early republic interacted with political philosophy, Horwitz shows. The doctrine of laissez-faire, long considered the cloak for competition, is here seen as a shield for the newly rich. By the 1840s the overarching reach of the doctrine prevented further distribution of wealth and protected entrenched classes by disallowing the courts very much power to intervene in economic life. This searching interpretation, which connects law and the courts to the real world, will engage historians in a new debate. For to view the law as an engine of vast economic transformation is to challenge in a stunning way previous interpretations of the eras of revolution and reform.
