Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'It has been a long while in Italian fiction since such an authentic and engaging voice has appeared.' Bruno Quaranta in La Stampa 'This memoir of four generations of a family provides a vivid and eloquent picture of Italian life stretching from the late 19th century, when the peasant lifestyle had changed little from medieval times, up to the consumer culture of the 1950s. It’s a saga that embraces characters like Maria, who emigrated to the USA for an unwise marriage, returning a few years later with a daughter and paralysis down one side of her body, and the author’s father, Angelo, a feckless chap who was interned in a German POW camp. In writing about her female-dominated family, some of whom she is old enough to remember – most notably the matriarchal grandmother Ninin – Giacobino imbues her account with a real sense of intimacy. She has a powerful feel for traditional Italian culture, her early chapters conjuring up a time when the hierarchy of the family was the only true reality, fairness was unknown and “a moment’s tenderness must last a week”. Alastair Mabbutt in The Herald 'An epic novel, which is the story of an Italy which no longer exists, becomes the portrait of a family. It is a novel which touches the heart.' Valeria Parrella in Grazie Beautifully and sympathetically evoking the intense world of working-class Turin, this story is a pleasure to read. The Catholic Herald '... well written and a fascinating read. I learned a great deal about aspects of Italian social history through the eyes of this one family. The translation is clever too, trying to keep a flavour of Piedmontese dialect while making sure English-speaking readers are not alienated by the use of too many foreign words. The characters are all vividly portrayed, from Ninin’s drunken and predatory grandfather, to the various aunts, and down to happy-go-lucky dog Pucci. .' The Historical Novel Society Review A warm and direct story, memorable for its vivid description and depth of cultural understanding. Thomas Tallon in The Tablet 'It's like a rural version of Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan saga . It’s a powerful and atmospheric record of largely unexplored terrain.' Margaret Drabble's Book of the Year in The Times Literary Supplement

Book excerpt: From the author of the New York Times Well Blog series, My Fat Dad Every story and every memory from my childhood is attached to food… Dawn Lerman spent her childhood constantly hungry. She craved good food as her father, 450 pounds at his heaviest, pursued endless fad diets, from Atkins to Pritikin to all sorts of freeze-dried, saccharin-laced concoctions, and insisted the family do the same—even though no one else was overweight. Dawn’s mother, on the other hand, could barely be bothered to eat a can of tuna over the sink. She was too busy ferrying her other daughter to acting auditions and scolding Dawn for cleaning the house (“Whom are you trying to impress?”). It was chaotic and lonely, but Dawn had someone she could turn to: her grandmother Beauty. Those days spent with Beauty, learning to cook, breathing in the scents of fresh dill or sharing the comfort of a warm pot of chicken soup, made it all bearable. Even after Dawn’s father took a prestigious ad job in New York City and moved the family away, Beauty would send a card from Chicago every week—with a recipe, a shopping list, and a twenty-dollar bill. She continued to cultivate Dawn’s love of wholesome food, and ultimately taught her how to make her own way in the world—one recipe at a time. In My Fat Dad, Dawn reflects on her colorful family and culinary-centric upbringing, and how food shaped her connection to her family, her Jewish heritage, and herself. Humorous and compassionate, this memoir is an ode to the incomparable satisfaction that comes with feeding the ones you love.

Book excerpt: If ten girls were asked to describe the “perfect” girl, they would likely rattle off an eerily similar list of qualities—from hair, skin, and weight to a cute button nose. That’s a problem, because God has given girls a desire to be desirable. If girls think that they will be most wanted if they fit a one-size-fits-all image of “perfection,” they will continually chase that proverbial carrot their entire lives. Backwards Beauty examines ten cultural lies young women listen to regarding beauty to help them unpack how they’re looking at themselves through the wrong lens. The “tips to feel ugly” range from “compare yourself to every other girl” to “eat junk and diet, diet, diet.” Reading a book by Jessie Minassian is like sitting down with a friend and talking about the hard things in life. Girls will be able to find freedom and hope in the midst of a culture that idolizes beauty.

Book excerpt: Grazia Deledda is one of the most important women writers of the twentieth century. Her depiction of the primitive and isolated communities of northern Sardinia in a perceptive, intense and individual style gained her the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1927. 'The interest in La Madre lies in the presentation of sheer instinctive life. The love of the priest for the woman is sheer instinctive passion, pure and undefiled by sentiment. The instinct of direct sex is so strong and so vivid, that only the bling instinct of mother obedience, the child instinct, can overcome it.' D. H. Lawrence ‘ Deledda’s talent for capturing the internal torment of her characters, and the inspired use of the dual perspective of Paul and his titular mother, saw her win the 1927 Nobel Literature Prize, and ensures the novella remains a compelling and refreshing read today.' Alex Payne in Buzz Magazine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hilarious guide to that incomparable creature -- the Southern mother. Southern society is arranged along matriarchal lines, since the Southern matriarch is a far more formidable being than the much nicer Southern male. She has to be this way; she was put on earth with a sacred mission: to drum good manners and the proper religion--ancestor worship--into the next generation. In Some Day You'll Thank Me for This, Gayden Metcalfe and Charlotte Hays, bestselling authors of Being Dead Is No Excuse and Somebody's Going to Die If Lily Beth Doesn't Catch That Bouquet, deliver up a hilarious treatise--complete with appropriate recipes from those finicky, demanding moms--on the joys, trials, and tribulations of being the daughter of a Southern mother. Including sections such as A Crown in Heaven (a Southern mother's favorite fashion accessory), Grande Dames, Toasting the Southern Mother, and why grandmothers prefer their "precious angel baby" grandchildren to their own "bad" children, this is the perfect gift for any Southern mother -- or daughter of one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margherita Giacobino’s book is a fictionalised biography/autobiography of Patricia Highsmith, taking the form of diary entries supposedly written by her, interspersed with a third-person narrative. It focuses on her psychological and emotional life, with the emphasis on feelings, relationships and aspirations rather than facts, dates and events. A lesbian in an era when to be homosexual was to be reviled and discriminated against, and made to feel guilty and ashamed, Patricia Highsmith struggled with her sexual identity in this social context, and the book fruitfully explores how this might have contributed to her creative output. The title is a reference to PH’s second novel The Price of Salt, a lesbian romance originally published under a pseudonym after it was rejected by the publisher of her first novel. It was not until 1990 that PH agreed to its reissue under her own name, with the new title Carol. 'The Price of Dreams has captured something essential about Patricia Highsmith - a unique but altogether plausible version, whose voice so echoes the voices the woman created throughout her writing life. This is just an astonishing work - a revelation.' Dorothy Allison

Book excerpt: Take an evolutionary journey through time and space in an unexpected vegan book that includes branding, hunting, spanking, torture, death and cannibalism. 21st Century Historian (Gentile Rainn): On occasion, before dying out and destroying themselves, the meat-eaters were seen hanging around back alleys of pubs drinking and fighting, sometimes sodomizing each other. 21st Century Historian (Herb Dean): If you look at things with hindsight, the meat-eaters never really had a chance. I mean, they were so hypocritical to the point where they would have one animal, whom they loved and cared for, living with them (Some of these animals were referred to as dogs. Note the dyslexic reference to God), and in the same moment would bleed and suffer another animal so they could devour its charred flesh for supper. Local Vegan (Said Huster): The idea that vegetarians and meat-eaters were both Homo sapiens is a post-mortem thought gone the way of the moo-cow. Homo sapiens were by nature very self-gratifying. In other words, they didn't care what they murdered or whom they hurt in crimes of hunger and passion. They acted very cruelly towards one another. Religions were developed to try to right these instinctual behaviors, but these religions did little to deter most Homo sapiens hell-bent on self-delusions of pride. Sometime around the turn of the twenty-fourth century, the first true Homo nexus was born. (See also Homo vegetare.) 21st Century Historian (Herb Dean): Moo-cows became extinct, though it is unknown whether this happened before or after the demise of the human (meat-eater) omnivore. A strain of CuuD Disease (almost always spelled capital C, lower case u, lower case u, capital D), a mutation of mad cow disease, killed roughly 99 percent of the cows, roughly two-thirds of the carnivores on the land, and most human omnivores. It is believed the other human omnivores destroyed themselves through wars, terrorist acts and unhealthy diets, or starved to death rather than eat vegetables. 21st Century Historian (Willow Whittier): It is said the last meat-eater died sometime around the turn of the 23rd century. His name was said to have been Ronald McDonald.
