An account of the historical and clinical aspects of porphyrins and bile pigments is also given. This volume is organized into 12 chapters and begins with an overview of protoporphyrins and their metabolic intermediates, paying particular attention to their synthesis and biosynthesis. The discussion then shifts to the biosynthesis of porphyrins and chlorophylls; the in vivo formation and metabolism of bile pigments such as biliverdin and bilirubin; and yellow, green, and blue bile pigments. The reader is then introduced to bile pigments of plants including phytochrome and phycobiliproteins; the general structures and nomenclature of bile pigment derivatives; and the Stokvis reaction. The book also considers the clinical chemistry of porphyrins, and then concludes with a chapter on milestones in the history of bile pigments. This was held between June 28 and July 1, 1977, under the joint chairman ship of Professor Samuel Schwartz and the editor. The organizers and chairmen of the symposium wish to thank the Sozialminister of Hessen, Armin Clauss, the President of the German Society for Clinical Chemis try, Professor A. Delbrlick, and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Philipp University, Professor F. Neurath, for their support and patronage. We are also grateful to Professor A. Treibs of the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Technical University of Munich. Professor Treibs, a former pupil, co-worker and now successor to the Nobel laureate Hans Fischer, kindly accepted the honorary presidency of this international symposium. The opening ceremony was inaugurated by the chairmen, with welcoming speeches by the President of Philipps University, Mr. Rudolf Zingel and patrons of the university. The editor outlined the 10 years of development of clinical biochemistry at Philipp University and traced in detail the continual development of its chief research effort in porphyria. It was pointed out that following the first international symposium on the regulation of porphyrin and heme biosynthesis in 1973 at Marburg (Doss, M. Book excerpt: Harderian glands, first described by Jacob Harder in two species of deer in 1694, are large, intraorbital glands which, with but few exceptions, are found in all land vertebrates. Certainly, their relatively large size, their phylogenetic age, and persistent conservation in all groups as they emerged from an aqueous to an air/land environment lend strong support to the logical deduction that they probably play an important role in the physiological adaptation to terrestrial life. Yet, few biologists know even what or where these glands are. For a variety of reasons, the Harderian glands have not received the attention they deserve and, as a result, the published works available have been scarce and scattered throughout the world literature. The current situation is remarkably similar to that which existed in regard to the pineal gland prior to the mid-1960s, i. e. , scattered literature, unknown function, few investigators, and little interest. Yet, following a few key papers, interest in the pineal gland expanded and soon an explosive increase in the knowledge and understanding of the pineal gland took place and continues today. Will history repeat itself? Originally, a few of us discussed the desirability of an informal Symposium on the Harderian glands.
