Book excerpt: "This volume covers all the major, broad-scale, multispecies monitoring programs in Canada aimed at tracking changes in species abundance. There are many other more local monitoring programs (e.g., tracking owls in Manitoba, the Red-shouldered Hawk Survey in Ontario, and game bird harvest surveys in many provinces) and a few national-scale surveys aimed at particular species (e.g., the Canadian Lakes Loon Survey), which are not covered in any detail here"--Introd.

Book Synopsis Seabird Attraction to Offshore Platforms and Seabird Monitoring from Offshore Support Vessels and Other Ships by : William A. Montevecchi
Download or read book Seabird Attraction to Offshore Platforms and Seabird Monitoring from Offshore Support Vessels and Other Ships written by William A. Montevecchi and published by [Calgary] : Environmental Studies Research Funds. This book was released on 1999 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seabirds are attracted to large offshore structures such as oil drilling platforms. This report presents a review of the literature on seabird attraction to offshore platforms and of the scientific feasibility of monitoring fluctuations in the spatial & temporal distributions & abundances of seabirds from support vessels. Sections of the review cover the following: seabird distribution in the north-west Atlantic; influences on seabird attraction to offshore platforms, and recommendations for surveys of avian associations with offshore platforms and for quantifying seabird mortality due to offshore platforms; and seabird monitoring from ships, including seabird counting methods, experimental design, and research design. Finally, considerations relating to assessment of seabird vulnerability to oil pollution are discussed.

Book Synopsis Volume 1: Seabird Biodiversity and Human Activities by : Jaime A. Ramos
Download or read book Volume 1: Seabird Biodiversity and Human Activities written by Jaime A. Ramos and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seabirds are global travellers connecting oceans and seas all over the world, and facing multiple threats at local and global scales. Seabirds are long-lived top predators, reflecting changes at lower trophic levels, and are good models to assess ecological changes produced by human societies. Thus, world-wide collaborations are needed to understand seabird ecology and to develop effective conservation measures benefitting both humans and seabird populations. This book provides a modern overview on seabird biodiversity studies: it begins by covering the most up-to-date techniques to study seabirds, and then focus on pragmatic issues related with interactions between seabirds and humans, the use of seabirds as ecological indicators and conservation of seabirds. It gives an updated insight on all these topics and highlights gaps that need further development for a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between seabirds and human actions. This book covers the response of the seabird research community to a biodiversity crisis aiming to contribute towards environmental sustainability. It should provide inspiration to a wide range of professionals and students, including the much needed world-wide collaboration between research groups and practitioners. In this way seabird research and conservation provide an inspiration for the solution of global issues such as climate change.

Book Synopsis Changes in Seabird Populations Breeding on Small Island, Wadham Islands, Newfoundland by : Gregory J. Robertson
Download or read book Changes in Seabird Populations Breeding on Small Island, Wadham Islands, Newfoundland written by Gregory J. Robertson and published by [Mount Pearl, N.L.] : Canadian Wildlife Service. This book was released on 2002 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of ongoing efforts to monitor seabird breeding colonies on the Newfoundland coast, the breeding seabirds of Small Island, in the Wadham Island group east of Fogo Island, were inventoried in summer 2001. This report describes & presents results of that inventory with regard to numbers of breeding Atlantic puffins (Fratercula arctica), Leach's storm petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa), and razorbill (Alca torda). Results from earlier surveys, particularly 1984, are also compiled & compared with these recent estimates. Finally, factors driving changes in the size of the breeding populations are discussed.
Book Synopsis Seabirds in the North-East Atlantic by : Henry Häkkinen
Download or read book Seabirds in the North-East Atlantic written by Henry Häkkinen and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2023-08-08 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was produced by the Zoological Society of London and the University of Cambridge with two aims: to assess seabirds’ vulnerability to climate change in the North-East Atlantic, and to identify potential conservation actions that could reduce this vulnerability. 'Seabirds in the North-East Atlantic' collates information from the scientific literature, non-governmental organisations’ reports, conservation practitioner input and online databases into a single volume, and provides a reference manual to assist conservation planning. It is intended to be used by anyone who wishes to identify climate change threats to seabirds; to compare threats between different areas of the North-East Atlantic; to start a quantitative climate change vulnerability assessment for a local population; or to review options for conservation action in response to climate change. This book stems from research published in December 2022, but assessments may be updated based on feedback and newly available information.
