Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madison Heights is known as the "City of Progress," with high levels of community spirit and volunteerism. Incorporated as a city on January 17, 1955, the area grew from contiguous, productive farmlands in the mid-1800s. Pioneering families such as Kendall and Lamphere contributed portions of their land for one-room schools. Later, mom-and-pop stores, automobile services, and taverns gave rise to the first businesses. The area, then known as Royal Oak Township, saw major growth following World War II, when many residents were employed by the auto industry. With a population expanding to over 40,000, the area offered a wide range of homes, senior housing, three quality school districts, and a variety of recreational, sports, and church opportunities for community involvement through numerous organizations. Emphasis has shifted from auto manufacturing to light industrial, medical, and technology companies. Madison Heights is a city of "hometown" warmth, and all of these qualities are illustrated through photographs and personal recollections in Images of America: Madison Heights.

Book Synopsis Colored Property by : David M. P. Freund
Download or read book Colored Property written by David M. P. Freund and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-04-13 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern whites in the post–World War II era began to support the principle of civil rights, so why did many of them continue to oppose racial integration in their communities? Challenging conventional wisdom about the growth, prosperity, and racial exclusivity of American suburbs, David M. P. Freund argues that previous attempts to answer this question have overlooked a change in the racial thinking of whites and the role of suburban politics in effecting this change. In Colored Property, he shows how federal intervention spurred a dramatic shift in the language and logic of residential exclusion—away from invocations of a mythical racial hierarchy and toward talk of markets, property, and citizenship. Freund begins his exploration by tracing the emergence of a powerful public-private alliance that facilitated postwar suburban growth across the nation with federal programs that significantly favored whites. Then, showing how this national story played out in metropolitan Detroit, he visits zoning board and city council meetings, details the efforts of neighborhood “property improvement” associations, and reconstructs battles over race and housing to demonstrate how whites learned to view discrimination not as an act of racism but as a legitimate response to the needs of the market. Illuminating government’s powerful yet still-hidden role in the segregation of U.S. cities, Colored Property presents a dramatic new vision of metropolitan growth, segregation, and white identity in modern America.

Download or read book Detroit written by Joe Darden and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 1990-06-28 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hub of the American auto industry and site of the celebrated Riverfront Renaissance, Detroit is also a city of extraordinary poverty, unemployment, and racial segregation. This duality in one of the mightiest industrial metropolises of twentieth-century North America is the focus of this study. Viewing the Motor City in light of sociology, geography, history, and planning, the authors examine the genesis of modern Detroit. They argue that the current situation of metropolitan Detroit—economic decentralization, chronic racial and class segregation, regional political fragmentation—is a logical result of trends that have gradually escalated throughout the post-World War II era. Examining its recent redevelopment policies and the ensuing political conflicts, Darden, Hill, Thomas, and Thomas, discuss where Detroit has been and where it is going. In the series Comparative American Cities, edited by Joe T. Darden.

Book Synopsis The Southern Diaspora by : James N. Gregory
Download or read book The Southern Diaspora written by James N. Gregory and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006-05-18 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1900 and the 1970s, twenty million southerners migrated north and west. Weaving together for the first time the histories of these black and white migrants, James Gregory traces their paths and experiences in a comprehensive new study that demonstrates how this regional diaspora reshaped America by "southernizing" communities and transforming important cultural and political institutions. Challenging the image of the migrants as helpless and poor, Gregory shows how both black and white southerners used their new surroundings to become agents of change. Combining personal stories with cultural, political, and demographic analysis, he argues that the migrants helped create both the modern civil rights movement and modern conservatism. They spurred changes in American religion, notably modern evangelical Protestantism, and in popular culture, including the development of blues, jazz, and country music. In a sweeping account that pioneers new understandings of the impact of mass migrations, Gregory recasts the history of twentieth-century America. He demonstrates that the southern diaspora was crucial to transformations in the relationship between American regions, in the politics of race and class, and in the roles of religion, the media, and culture.
