Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Population and Development is designed to fill a significant gap in introductory teaching materials on population for undergraduate and Masters students of demography, development studies, economics, geography, and related disciplines. The text grew out of Nigel Crook's lecturesat SOAS, University of London, and its use of models and data from a wider-than-normal geographical base reflects his intention to produce a truly international course book. The book considers the debate over the relationships between population, natural resources, and development from Malthus on, and introduces recent thinking on population and environment issues. The political economy of famine and health, and of fertility and birth control, is discussed in detail. The final chapters focus on interrelationships between population change and urbanization and industrialization in the developing world. Each chapter introduces theories and ideas about population and development and then moves on to empirical and quantitative material and case studies. Demographic measures and principles are explained fully in boxes, without taking any prior technical knowledge for granted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-First Century India is the first study of India's development giving a fully integrated account of population and development. It is built on new projections of the population for fifty years from the Census of 2001. India's population then had already passed 1 billion. Twenty-five years later it will exceed 1.4 billion, and will almost certainly pass 1.5 billion by mid-century. The projections incorporate for the first time both inter-state migration and the role of HIV/AIDS. Theyalso show India's urban future, with close to half a billion urban inhabitants by the year 2026. The implications of this population growth are then traced out in a range of modelling and analytical work. Growing numbers are found to complicate the task of achieving widespread education in a number of India's states, while other states are already experiencing declines in their school-age population. Demographic growth also contributes to poverty, and increasing divergence in social conditions among the states. As population growth slows in the country overall, the labour force continues to grow relatively fast, with difficult consequences for employment. But national economic growth could be accelerated by the 'demographic bonus' of the declining proportion of dependents to workers in the population. The book is reasonably optimistic about India's food prospects: the country can continue to feed itself. It can also enjoy higher levels of energy use, manufacturing, and modern forms of transport, while experiencing less chemical pollution. India's cities can become cleaner and healthier places to live. Perhaps the most difficult environmental issue, and the one most strongly related to population growth, is water. Some states also face severe pressures on common property resources. A policy chapter concludes the book. India's future problems are large, but in principle manageable. However, whether the country will actually achieve sustainable development for allis another matter.

Book excerpt: One million women are "missing" from India's population due to female neglect of various sorts--and possibly one million more due to acts of direct elimination before birth. Within that context, this collection employs several field surveys to explore the connections between population, gender, and development by way of two distinct sets of conditions. The first set involves individual endowments--the resources that a household will allocate to its women. The second set concerns the ways in which the productive and reproductive roles of men and women are structured in societies. With the help of theoretical reviews and empirical studies, this book illustrates the powerful, intermediary effects of gender relations in modifying or reinforcing gender biases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of migration as a livelihood strategy in influencing food access among rural households. Migration forms a key component of livelihoods for an increasing number of rural households in many developing countries. Importantly, there is now a growing consensus among academics and policymakers on the potential positive effects of migration in promoting human development. Concurrently, the significance of food security as an important development objective has grown tremendously, and the Sustainable Development Goals agenda envisages eliminating all forms of malnutrition. However, the academic and policy discussions on these two issues have largely proceeded in silos, with little attention devoted to the relationship they bear with each other. Using the conceptual frameworks of 'entitlements' and 'sustainable livelihoods', this book seeks to fill this gap in the context of India - country with the most food-insecure people in the world and where migration is integral to rural livelihoods.
