Book Synopsis Popular Natural History, Vol. 1 by : J. S. Kingsley
Download or read book Popular Natural History, Vol. 1 written by J. S. Kingsley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Natural History, Vol. 1: A Description of Animal Life, From the Lowest Forms Up to Man IT has been the endeavor, in the preparation of these volumes, to present a popular account of Animal Life; but while scientific techni calities have been carefully kept in the background, it is hoped that scientific accuracy has not been sacrificed in the operation. To some there may appear an inequality in treatment. This, in part at least, has been intentional. Insects and Birds have already an enormous popular literature, while the other forms have been more or less neg lected. Believing that these other animals have their points Of interest and claims upon our attention, they have been given a prominence poissibly greater than they deserve. Another feature in these pages has been the collection of bits of unnatural history from the pages of the older writers. These have of course no place in our present science, but they belong to the history of zoology, and as such, have no small value, aside from their interest as scientific curiosities. It is hardly necessary to call attention to the fact that there is another Side to the animal kingdom which is fully as interesting and attractive as that presented here. In the last twenty years zoology has taken a new departure and a new lease of life. NO longer are zoologists content with watching the habits of well-known animals, and imposing long Latin names on those which are new. Museums are no longer necessary for the better class of work. To-day the student is trying to solve deeper problems. He is finding out how all animals grow from the egg to the adult condition; he is tracing resemblances, rather than difierences, and showmg the. Essential unity of all life, however great the apparent differences. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book American Bison written by Dale F. Lott and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the best book I've read about American bison and their habitat. It is vivid, concise, witty, erudite, first-hand, and up-to-date. Most important, it argues convincingly that the only way to assure survival of bison and their habitat in the wild is to establish a Great Plains National Park at least 5,000 square miles in extent."—David Rains Wallace, author of The Bonehunter's Revenge: Dinosaurs, Greed, and the Great Scientific Feud of the Gilded Age "Dr. Lott's scholarship is strong and thorough. American Bison presents an extensive, state-of-the-art review of key points of American bison that are unaddressed or under-addressed by previous books. Moreover, it does it in a popularized, often narrative form that makes the material comprehensible to the educated lay reader as well as to the bison scholar."—James H. Shaw, Department of Zoology, Oklahoma State University
Book Synopsis California Forests and Woodlands by : Verna R. Johnston
Download or read book California Forests and Woodlands written by Verna R. Johnston and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1996-06-16 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From majestic Redwoods to ancient Western Bristlecone Pines, California's trees have long inspired artists, poets, naturalists—and real estate developers. Verna Johnston's splendid book, illustrated with her superb color photographs and Carla Simmons's detailed black-and-white drawings, now offers an unparalleled view of the Golden State's world-renowned forests and woodlands. In clear, vivid prose, Johnston introduces each of the state's dominant forest types. She describes the unique characteristics of the trees and the interrelationships of the plants and animals living among them, and she analyzes how fire, flood, fungi, weather, soil, and humans have affected the forest ecology. The world of forest and woodland animals comes alive in these pages—the mating games, predation patterns, communal life, and the microscopic environment of invertebrates and fungi are all here. Johnston also presents a sobering view of the environmental hazards that threaten the state's trees: acid snow, ozone, blister rust, over-logging. Noting the interconnectedness of the diverse life forms within tree regions, she suggests possible answers to the problems currently plaguing these areas. Enriched by the observations of early naturalists and Johnston's many years of fieldwork, this is a book that will be welcomed by all who care about California's treasured forests and woodlands.
