This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988. This book has grown from a research workshop that began at the University of North Carolina under the direction of Maynard Hufschmidt. Professor Hufschmidt's long-held interest in the incorporation of environmental and other social values into benefit-cost analysis led to a research project entitled, "The Role of Environmental Indicators in Water Resource Planning and Policy Development," funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior. That project brought together the authors of this volume for a two-year period during which the groundwork for this book was laid.

Book Synopsis Concepts of Transportation Economics by : Barry E Prentice
Download or read book Concepts of Transportation Economics written by Barry E Prentice and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-11-16 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation is the world's largest invisible industry. Modern society is completely dependent on transportation to sustain its way of life, and it is all around us constantly. Yet the economics of transportation is a mystery to most people. Why do air fares rise and fall? Why do urban transit systems struggle to survive and require such large public subsidies? Why does freight transport cost more to move in one direction than an equal distance in another? Why is the government so heavily involved in transportation? Concepts of Transportation Economics provides explanations to these queries and many more, as well-renowned experts in the field, Barry E Prentice and Darren Prokop interpret the unique dynamics underlying transportation through the lens of applied economics, and demonstrate that the operations of transportation are completely logical and obvious once the concepts that underlie business decisions and consumer reactions are explained.

Book Synopsis Institutional Economics: Theory, Method, Policy by : Marc R. Tool
Download or read book Institutional Economics: Theory, Method, Policy written by Marc R. Tool and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-07-27 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume appraises, refines, and extends the institutionalist's evolutionary theory of political economy in six different areas of inquiry: (a) the provision of a fresh and comparative overview of institutional economics in general; (b) the presentation and refinement of pragmatic methods of inquiry; (c) the exploration of extensions and clarifications of instrumental value theory; (d) the distillation of an emergent institutionalist theory of labor markets; (e) the explication of a culture-based theory of economic development; and (f) the formulation of an analytical design that provides direction for institutional policy making. Institutional Economics: Theory, Method, Policy appears at an especially opportune time, when there is widespread and accumulating analytical dissatisfaction with received economic doctrine. The traditional neoclassical and Marxist views of how to explain, order, and operate a political economy are now in question throughout the world. Appeals are being made for more relevant and pragmatic, less doctrinaire and dogmatic, approaches to economic inquiry and problem solving. This volume provides fresh theoretical underpinnings for such problem solving efforts.

Download or read book Rescuing Reason written by R. Nola and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do knowledge and science arise from the application of canons of rationality and scientific method? Or is all our scientific knowledge caused by socio-political factors, or by our interests in the socio-political - the view of sociologists of "knowledge"? Or does it result from interplay of relations of power - the view of Michel Foucault? Or does our knowledge arise from "the will to power" - the view of Nietzsche? This volume sets out to critically examine the theses of those who would debunk the idea of rational explanation. The book is wide-ranging. The theories of method of Quine, Kuhn, Feyerabend (amongst others) are discussed and related to the views of Marx, Foucault, Wittgenstein and Nietzsche as well as sociologists of science such as Mannheim and Bloor. The author provides a wide interpretative framework which links the doctrines espoused by many of these authors; it is argued that they inherit many of the difficulties in the Strong Programme in the sociology of "knowledge", and that they fail to reconcile the normativity of knowledge with their naturalism. It is argued that neither relativists, sceptics, nihilists, sociologists of "knowledge" nor the postmodernists successfully debunk the claims of rational explanation, far from it: these theorists presuppose much of the theory of methodology they deny.
Book Synopsis Theories of Scientific Method by : Robert Nola
Download or read book Theories of Scientific Method written by Robert Nola and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it to be scientific? Is there such a thing as scientific method? And if so, how might such methods be justified? Robert Nola and Howard Sankey seek to provide answers to these fundamental questions in their exploration of the major recent theories of scientific method. Although for many scientists their understanding of method is something they just pick up in the course of being trained, Nola and Sankey argue that it is possible to be explicit about what this tacit understanding of method is, rather than leave it as some unfathomable mystery. They robustly defend the idea that there is such a thing as scientific method and show how this might be legitimated. This book begins with the question of what methodology might mean and explores the notions of values, rules and principles, before investigating how methodologists have sought to show that our scientific methods are rational. Part 2 of this book sets out some principles of inductive method and examines its alternatives including abduction, IBE, and hypothetico-deductivism. Part 3 introduces probabilistic modes of reasoning, particularly Bayesianism in its various guises, and shows how it is able to give an account of many of the values and rules of method. Part 4 considers the ideas of philosophers who have proposed distinctive theories of method such as Popper, Lakatos, Kuhn and Feyerabend and Part 5 continues this theme by considering philosophers who have proposed naturalised theories of method such as Quine, Laudan and Rescher. This book offers readers a comprehensive introduction to the idea of scientific method and a wide-ranging discussion of how historians of science, philosophers of science and scientists have grappled with the question over the last fifty years.
