Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of my favorite words in the Bible is "ponder." I love the fact that Mary "treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart" (Luke 2:19). The Psalmist also pondered and calls us to ponder (Psalm 64:9, 111:2, 119:95). Ponder means to think about something deliberately, carefully, to engage in contemplation. That pretty much defines how I come to God's Word and how I think about life. I ponder. Then one year at Christmas I realized that pondering often led me to wonder, sometimes questioning (I wonder how or why), sometimes in astonishment or amazement, with curiosity, or surprise (the Wow factor). Thus, the title of this book. So much of life, so much of God, so much of God's Word has led me to ponder, to wonder in all the definitions of that word. May these thoughts from my ponderings lead you to Ponder in Wonder.

Book excerpt: In A Place for Wonder, Georgia Heard and Jennifer McDonough discuss how to create "a landscape of wonder," a primary classroom where curiosity, creativity, and exploration are encouraged. For it is these characteristics, the authors write, that develop intelligent, inquiring, life-long learners. The authors' research shows that many primary grade state standards encourage teaching for understanding, critical thinking, creativity, and question asking, and promote the development of children who have the attributes of inventiveness, curiosity, engagement, imagination, and creativity. With these goals in mind, Georgia and Jennifer provide teachers with numerous, practical ways--setting up "wonder centers," gathering data though senses, teaching nonfiction craft--they can create a classroom environment where student's questions and observations are part of daily work. They also present a step-by-step guide to planning a nonfiction reading and writing unit of study--creating a nonfiction book, which includes creating a table of contents, writing focused chapters, using "wow" words, and developing point of view. A Place for Wonder will help teachers reclaim their classrooms as a place where true learning is the norm.

To seek for meaning in our lives is surely one of the most rewarding endeavors we can undertake.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The close relationship between the Old Testament and archaeology goes without saying. However, the methodological nuances involved are often either underappreciated or ignored. Using William Dever's idea of convergence, this work attempts to flesh out details on how archaeology and Old Testament studies merge. It examines some of the most important archaeological finds to date and determines that, whether through a broad or narrow convergence, the history of research has shown that these two separate disciplines exhibit a tendency to inform one another. In the case of Old Testament studies, these convergences may even be paradigm-shifting. In every case, the convergences are historically and culturally informative, and therefore illuminate the depth of the biblical text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world on fire with unprecedented possibility as well as peril, what kind of mind is needed in order to thrive and survive? How can education help develop human potential to be a match for this reality? The Integrative Mind radically updates the vision that we hold for education, the pedagogy that can help us achieve it, and the human consciousness that underlies it all. Consciousness and culture has been thrown out of balance by the neglect of key ways of meeting the world. The solution at the edge of this new episteme is not so much about what we know but instead about how we know. With practical applications and contemporary research, Tobin Hart shows that the way into the future requires a recalibration of mind. Hart explores five “missing minds”: contemplative, empathic, beautiful, embodied, and imaginative. These help open the aperture of consciousness enabling us to move, as Thomas Berry said, from seeing the world as a collection of objects to experiencing it as a communion of subjects. The result is an essential deepening of understanding and our humanity.

Book excerpt: Now a Netflix film starring Florence Pugh: In this “old-school page turner” (Stephen King, New York Times Book Review) by the bestselling author of Room, an English nurse is brought to a small Irish village to observe what appears to be a miracle—a girl said to have survived without food for months—and soon finds herself fighting to save the child's life. Tourists flock to the cabin of eleven-year-old Anna O'Donnell, who believes herself to be living off manna from heaven, and a journalist is sent to cover the sensation. Lib Wright, a veteran of Florence Nightingale's Crimean campaign, is hired to keep watch over the girl. Written with all the propulsive tension that made Room a huge bestseller, The Wonder works beautifully on many levels -- a tale of two strangers who transform each other's lives, a powerful psychological thriller, and a story of love pitted against evil. Acclaim for The Wonder: "Deliciously gothic.... Dark and vivid, with complicated characters, this is a novel that lodges itself deep" (USA Today, 3/4 stars) "Heartbreaking and transcendent"(New York Times) "A fable as lean and discomfiting as Anna's dwindling body.... Donoghue keeps us riveted" (Chicago Tribune) "Donoghue poses powerful questions about faith and belief" (Newsday)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What kind of book is the Bible? Is it a rulebook or a guidebook for moral living? Is it a history book or a book filled with fascinating (and sometimes fantastic) stories? Did humans write the Bible or did God somehow speak a perfect message that the authors transcribed? Many people have asked these questions about the nature of this beautiful, odd, comforting, disturbing book the church calls its "Holy Scripture." Charlotte Vaughan Coyle shares her own journey to make sense of the Bible in this read-through-the-Bible-in-a-year project. She discovered that the crucial work of asking hard questions and even arguing with the Bible revealed the Scriptures to be a symphony of polyphonic voices, a work of art that paints an alternative vision of reality, a complex novel-like story unavoidably embedded in its own culture and time, and yet able to give witness to the God beyond history who has acted (and continues to act) within history. With the heart of a pastor and the passion of a preacher, Rev. Coyle invites seekers and students (both churched and un-churched) to strap on their scuba gear and join her for a deeper dive beneath the surface of this immense, colorful, mysterious world of the Bible.
