Book excerpt: This book may seem a simple accumulation of twenty-one public space projects in eight Latin American cities. On closer inspection, the presentation of project descriptions, photographs, and annotated drawings reflects a concern to analytically explain the operative aspects at work. The publication is not intended to serve only as a catalogue, guide, or manual on how to produce public space in spontaneous settlements. Rather, it goes beyond the aims of an index of best practices. It is intended, instead, as an empirical base for a critical and theoretical engagement with the problematic of development, social inclusion, public investment, (in)formal settlement, civil society and the public sphere. The publication achieves its final function at this third level, by providing a compelling argument to expand the agency of architects and urban designers and creatively find ways of justifying, financing, and building public spaces in communities —spaces that have a catalytic effectiveness in achieving significant urban and social transformation. This book was awarded by a Graham Foundation Grant and CAF Development Bank of Latin America. Book Synopsis New Sacred Architecture by : Phyllis Richardson
Download or read book New Sacred Architecture written by Phyllis Richardson and published by Laurence King Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book reflects an awakening of interest in religious faiths and the emergence of a 'global exchange of architecture and culture. While Spain's Rafael Moneo has recently completed a cathedral in Los Angeles, Britain's Thomas Heatherwick is designing a Buddhist temple in Japan, John Pawson is working on a Cistercian monastery in the Czech Republic and Richard Meier has completed his Jubilee Church in Rome. It seems, as one Wallpaper registered] pundit commented, 'religion is getting a redesign' and the architect's faith is as unimportant as his or her nationality. I Looking at ways in which contemporary architects are approaching religious or meditative space, this book focuses on churches, chapels, temples, synagogues and mosques that have been built in the last few years and that represent a late-twentieth/ early-twenty-first century aesthetic.

Book excerpt: Today, architecture schools are truly international in their intake, as students are able to select from courses worldwide. For school leavers and undergraduates, the choice is bewildering. Where different institutions provide very different courses and ultimately very different architects, the very act of shopping for a degree is an incredibly important stage in an architecture student’s career. This book is set to become a touchstone publication for anyone involved in architectural education, from the academic to the aspiring student. It provides interviews with four of the most influential educators/heads of schools around the world: Peter Cook, Chair, the Bartlett School of Architecture, London, UK Bernard Tschumi, Dean, School of Architecture at Columbia University, USA Leon van Schaik, Innovation Professor of Architecture, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia Elia Zenghelis, Berlage, Dusseldorf This is followed by short self-biographies of eleven further prominent figures including Rem Koolhaas, Anthony Vidler and Paul Virilio It is the first publication of its kind to comprehensively cover architectural education in its current context as an international market It will feature the first invaluable listing of architectural schools worldwide: no dedicated listing currently exists in printed form or on the web, giving students a useful reference from which to start the decision making process
Book Synopsis The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution by : Eric Foner
Download or read book The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution written by Eric Foner and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize–winning scholar, a timely history of the constitutional changes that built equality into the nation’s foundation and how those guarantees have been shaken over time. The Declaration of Independence announced equality as an American ideal, but it took the Civil War and the subsequent adoption of three constitutional amendments to establish that ideal as American law. The Reconstruction amendments abolished slavery, guaranteed all persons due process and equal protection of the law, and equipped black men with the right to vote. They established the principle of birthright citizenship and guaranteed the privileges and immunities of all citizens. The federal government, not the states, was charged with enforcement, reversing the priority of the original Constitution and the Bill of Rights. In grafting the principle of equality onto the Constitution, these revolutionary changes marked the second founding of the United States. Eric Foner’s compact, insightful history traces the arc of these pivotal amendments from their dramatic origins in pre–Civil War mass meetings of African-American “colored citizens” and in Republican party politics to their virtual nullification in the late nineteenth century. A series of momentous decisions by the Supreme Court narrowed the rights guaranteed in the amendments, while the states actively undermined them. The Jim Crow system was the result. Again today there are serious political challenges to birthright citizenship, voting rights, due process, and equal protection of the law. Like all great works of history, this one informs our understanding of the present as well as the past: knowledge and vigilance are always necessary to secure our basic rights.
