Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough approach for mastering the behavior and operation of induction motors, an essential device in the modern industrial world. Its way of presentation renders this book suitable for selfteaching by students, engineers, and researchers in the field of electrical engineering. It covers the modern theory of induction motor applications and control methods. The transient analysis of both three-phase and single-phase induction motors as well as that of the double-cage motors are developed. The principles of such modern control methods as Fiel-Oriented Control, Direct Torque Control and Computed Charges Acceleration Method are clearly treated in this monograph. Numerous equations, simulations, and figures are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controlling the level of noise in electrical motors is critical to overall system performance. However, predicting noise of an electrical motor is more difficult and less accurate than for other characteristics such as torque-speed. Recent advances have produced powerful computational methods for noise prediction, and Noise of Polyphase Electric Motors is the first book to collect these advances in a single source. It is also the first to include noise prediction for permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motors. Complete coverage of all aspects of electromagnetic, structural, and vibro-acoustic noise makes this a uniquely comprehensive reference. The authors begin with the basic principles of noise generation and radiation, magnetic field and radial forces, torque pulsations, acoustic calculations, as well as noise and vibration of mechanical and acoustic origin. Moving to applications, the book examines in detail stator system vibration analysis including the use of finite element method (FEM) modal analysis; FEM for radial pressure and structural modeling; boundary element methods (BEM) for acoustic radiation; statistical energy analysis (SEA); instrumentation including technologies, procedures, and standards; and both passive and active methods for control of noise and vibration. Noise of Polyphase Electric Motors gathers the fundamental concepts along with all of the analytical, numerical, and statistical methods into a unified reference. It supplies all of the tools necessary to improve the noise performance of electrical motors at the design stage.

Book excerpt: Provides the general background for design of electrical motors by placing motor design in the context of the overall drive and its function, and with a survey of the various electrical and mechanical components. The design itself is addressed using an original approach based on first principles: it begins with the design specifications, expresses them in terms of electric and magnetic stresses, establishes appropriate geometry, and arrives at the dimensions. Unconventional topologies are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Induction motors having more than three phases were investigated to determine their suitability for electric vehicle applications. The objective was to have a motor with a current rating lower than that of a three-phase motor. The name chosen for these is high phase order (HPO) motors. Motors having six phases and nine phases were given the most attention. It was found that HPO motors are quite suitable for electric vehicles, and for many other applications as well. They have characteristics which are as good as or better than three-phase motors for practically all applications where polyphase induction motors are appropriate. Some of the analysis methods are presented, and several of the equivalent circuits which facilitate the determination of harmonic currents and losses, or currents with unbalanced sources, are included. The sometimes large stator currents due to harmonics in the source voltages are pointed out. Filters which can limit these currents were developed. An analysis and description of these filters is included. Experimental results which confirm and illustrate much of the theory are also included. These include locked rotor test results and full-load performance with an open phase. Also shown are oscillograms which display the reduction in harmonic currents when a filter is used with the experimental motor supplied by a non-sinusoidal source. Klingshirn, Eugene A. Book excerpt: The asynchronous polyphase induction motor has been the motor of choice in industrial settings for about the past half century because power electronics can be used to control its output behavior. Before that, the dc motor was widely used because of its easy speed and torque controllability. The two main reasons why this might be are its ruggedness and low cost. The induction motor is a rugged machine because it is brushless and has fewer internal parts that need maintenance or replacement. This makes it low cost in comparison to other motors, such as the dc motor. Because of these facts, the induction motor and drive system have been gaining market share in industry and even in alternative applications such as hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehicles. The subject of this thesis is to ascertain various control algorithms0́9 advantages and disadvantages and give recommendations for their use under certain conditions and in distinct applications. Four drives will be compared as fairly as possible by comparing their parameter sensitivities, dynamic responses, and steady-state errors. Different switching techniques are used to show that the motor drive is separate from the switching scheme; changing the switching scheme produces entirely different responses for each motor drive.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Analysis of Induction Motor Applications: Thesis Experience has proven that power may be produced more economically by one large station than by a number of small ones. It is for this reason and the additional fact that continuity of service is better assured, that the large central station has come into general use. On the other hand, the con sumers are scattered over a large territory and this necessitates the transmission of power for long distances. To avoid excess ive line losses the power should be transmitted at high volt ages, and the ease with which alternating current may be hand led makes it especially desirable. Three phase current is used because of the advantages of the polyphase motor and be cause of the economy of copper in the construction of line for transmitting polyphase current. Book excerpt: Modeling of Induction Motors with One and Two Degrees of Mechanical Freedom presents the mathematical model of induction motors with two degrees of mechanical freedom (IM-2DMF), formed in the electromagnetic field as well as in circuit theory, which allows analyzing the performance of these three groups of motors taking into account edge effects, winding and current asymmetry. The model derived is based on the concept of magnetic field wave moving in the air-gap with a helical motion. In general, the rotor moves helically too with the rotary-linear slip. The electromagnetic field as well as motor performance of the particular motors is analyzed. The mathematical model of IM-2DMF is more general to the model of induction motors with one degree of mechanical freedom, i.e. rotary and linear motors. Examples of modeling two types of rotary disc motors and flat linear motor with twisted primary part are presented with inclusion of finite stator and rotor length and width effects. The simulation results are backed by the measurements carried out on the laboratory models, which were tested on the unique measurement stand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Design of Polyphase Generators and Motors During several recent years the author has given courses of lectures at three technical schools in London, on the subject of the design of electric machinery. These three schools were: the Northampton Institute of Technology; Faraday House; and University College. Various methods of procedure were employed and these ultimately developed into a general plan which (so far as it related to the subjects of Polyphase Generators and Polyphase Motors), has been followed in the present treatise. It was the author's experience that the students attending his lectures took an earnest interest in calculating designs of their own, in parallel with the working out of the typical design selected by the author for the purpose of his lectures. At the outset of the course, each member of the class was assigned the task of working out a design for a stipulated rated output, speed and pressure. Collectively, the designs undertaken by the class, constituted a series of machines, and co-operation was encouraged with a view to obtaining, at the conclusion of the course of lectures, a set of consistent designs. If a student encountered difficulty or doubt concerning some feature of his design, he was encouraged to compare notes with the students engaged in designing machines of the next larger and smaller ratings or the next higher and lower speeds. Ultimately the results for the entire group of designs were incorporated in a set of tables of which each student obtained blue prints. At two of these colleges, the "sandwich" system was in operation, that is to say, terms of attendance at the college were "sandwiched" with terms during which the student was employed in an electrical engineering works.
