Book excerpt: Random walks, Markov chains and electrical networks serve as an introduction to the study of real-valued functions on finite or infinite graphs, with appropriate interpretations using probability theory and current-voltage laws. The relation between this type of function theory and the (Newton) potential theory on the Euclidean spaces is well-established. The latter theory has been variously generalized, one example being the axiomatic potential theory on locally compact spaces developed by Brelot, with later ramifications from Bauer, Constantinescu and Cornea. A network is a graph with edge-weights that need not be symmetric. This book presents an autonomous theory of harmonic functions and potentials defined on a finite or infinite network, on the lines of axiomatic potential theory. Random walks and electrical networks are important sources for the advancement of the theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multivariate polysplines are a new mathematical technique that has arisen from a synthesis of approximation theory and the theory of partial differential equations. It is an invaluable means to interpolate practical data with smooth functions. Multivariate polysplines have applications in the design of surfaces and "smoothing" that are essential in computer aided geometric design (CAGD and CAD/CAM systems), geophysics, magnetism, geodesy, geography, wavelet analysis and signal and image processing. In many cases involving practical data in these areas, polysplines are proving more effective than well-established methods, such as kKriging, radial basis functions, thin plate splines and minimum curvature. - Part 1 assumes no special knowledge of partial differential equations and is intended as a graduate level introduction to the topic - Part 2 develops the theory of cardinal Polysplines, which is a natural generalization of Schoenberg's beautiful one-dimensional theory of cardinal splines - Part 3 constructs a wavelet analysis using cardinal Polysplines. The results parallel those found by Chui for the one-dimensional case - Part 4 considers the ultimate generalization of Polysplines - on manifolds, for a wide class of higher-order elliptic operators and satisfying a Holladay variational property

Book excerpt: The Bochner-Martinelli integral representation for holomorphic functions or'sev eral complex variables (which has already become classical) appeared in the works of Martinelli and Bochner at the beginning of the 1940's. It was the first essen tially multidimensional representation in which the integration takes place over the whole boundary of the domain. This integral representation has a universal 1 kernel (not depending on the form of the domain), like the Cauchy kernel in e . However, in en when n > 1, the Bochner-Martinelli kernel is harmonic, but not holomorphic. For a long time, this circumstance prevented the wide application of the Bochner-Martinelli integral in multidimensional complex analysis. Martinelli and Bochner used their representation to prove the theorem of Hartogs (Osgood Brown) on removability of compact singularities of holomorphic functions in en when n > 1. In the 1950's and 1960's, only isolated works appeared that studied the boundary behavior of Bochner-Martinelli (type) integrals by analogy with Cauchy (type) integrals. This study was based on the Bochner-Martinelli integral being the sum of a double-layer potential and the tangential derivative of a single-layer potential. Therefore the Bochner-Martinelli integral has a jump that agrees with the integrand, but it behaves like the Cauchy integral under approach to the boundary, that is, somewhat worse than the double-layer potential. Thus, the Bochner-Martinelli integral combines properties of the Cauchy integral and the double-layer potential.

Book excerpt: This is the first of two volumes dedicated to the centennial of the distinguished mathematician Selim Grigorievich Krein. The companion volume is Contemporary Mathematics, Volume 734. Krein was a major contributor to functional analysis, operator theory, partial differential equations, fluid dynamics, and other areas, and the author of several influential monographs in these areas. He was a prolific teacher, graduating 83 Ph.D. students. Krein also created and ran, for many years, the annual Voronezh Winter Mathematical Schools, which significantly influenced mathematical life in the former Soviet Union. The articles contained in this volume are written by prominent mathematicians, former students and colleagues of Selim Krein, as well as lecturers and participants of Voronezh Winter Schools. They are devoted to a variety of contemporary problems in functional analysis, operator theory, several complex variables, topological dynamics, and algebraic, convex, and integral geometry.

Cubature formulas, for calculating the volumes of bodies in multidimensional space, were named by analogy with quadrature formulas, used to calculate the areas of plane figures. Topics include basic concepts and formulations, the polyharmonic equation, simple problems of the theory of computations, order of convergence of cubature formulas, considering a regular boundary layer, optimal formulas, and formulas for rational polyhedra. Book excerpt: This volume of the Proceedings of the congress ISAAC '97 collects the con tributions of the four sections 1. Function theoretic and functional analytic methods for pde, 2. Applications of function theory of several complex variables to pde, 3. Integral equations and boundary value problems, 4. Partial differential equations. Most but not all of the authors have participated in the congress. Unfortunately some from Eastern Europe and Asia have not managed to come because of lack of financial support. Nevertheless their manuscripts of the proposed talks are included in this volume. The majority of the papers deal with complex methods. Among them boundary value problems in particular the Riemann-Hilbert, the Riemann (Hilbert) and related problems are treated. Boundary behaviour of vector-valued functions are studied too. The Riemann-Hilbert problem is solved for elliptic complex equations, for mixed complex equations, and for several complex variables. It is considered in a general topological setting for mappings into q;n and related to Toeplitz operators. Convolution operators are investigated for nilpotent Lie groups leading to some consequences for the null space of the tangential Cauchy Riemann operator. Some boundary value problems for overdetermined systems in balls of q;n are solved explicitly. A survey is given for the Gauss-Manin connection associated with deformations of curve singularities. Several papers deal with generalizations of analytic functions with various applications to mathematical physics. Singular integrals in quaternionic anal ysis are studied which are applied to the time-harmonic Maxwell equations.
