Download or read book Arthritis written by H. Deicher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rheumatoid arthritis is a common disease, an estimated 1. 5% of the population being under medical treatment for it in European countries and elsewhere. However, to date the origin of this chronic inflammatory disorder has not been elucidated. Evidence for the involvement of microbial agents is still tenuous, the rea son for the defective control of inflammation is still unknown, and the disease all too of ten progresses to crippling stages despite long-term treatment. As T. McKeown recently stated with regard to rheumatoid arthritis, "not enough is even known to indicate which is the more promising approach, and the pru dent course is to investigate both origins and mechanisms". While working on animal model diseases as well as on aspects of rheumatoid arthritis and related disorders in man, the members of the Special Research Area on patho physiology of rheumatoid inflammation in man and. animals (Sonderforschungsbereich 54 "Pa thomechanismen der rheumatoiden Entztindung bei Mensch und Tier"; maintained by the Deut sche Forschungsgemeinschaft) at the Veterinary and Medical Schools, Hannover, have been guided by the concept that by studying clinically and morphologically similar diseases in several species, mutually stimulating results might lead to improved knowledge of the pathophysio logy of rheumatoid arthritis. In particular, from working with model diseases in animals new approaches to the etiology of rheumatoid arthritis might be derived, while detailed knowledge of pathogenetic processes in rheu matoid arthritis could further research in chronic stages of pertinent animal diseases
Book Synopsis Therapeutics in Rheumatology by : H. A. Bird
Download or read book Therapeutics in Rheumatology written by H. A. Bird and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the drugs used in the treatment and management of rheumatic disorders. The term 'therapeutics' used in the title is intended to mirror the relevance of drugs in the widest sense of the word. Thus, general principles underlying pharmaceutical and pharmacological study have been included together with more clinical matters concerned with applying specific rheumatic problems. The need for another work on rheumatological drugs in itself, as opposed to the different approach intended, was prompted by the ever continuing and bewildering plethora of antirheumatic drugs flooding the market at present. We believe that such a burgeoning of new preparations is welcome in an era when in general there are still no 'cures' available. Moreover, we also feel that a continued update of this rapidly advancing field is essential, not only for its own sake, but also to place it in perspective with itself and with neighbouring fields.
Book Synopsis Pathology and Pathobiology of Rheumatic Diseases by : Hans G. Fassbender
Download or read book Pathology and Pathobiology of Rheumatic Diseases written by Hans G. Fassbender and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pathology and Pathobiology of Rheumatic Diseases glows with the uncommon precision of the pathologist, the clarity of the tea cher, and the unswerving commitment of the investigator. Fass bender has produced a major contribution to the literature of rheumatic diseases. The practical experience and wisdom brought together in this book, substantiated by excellent exam ples of histopathology, produce a landmark for all who have made the study of rheumatic diseases their profession. The enor mous achievements made in molecular biology, genetics, struc tural biochemistry, and clinical science have been assembled in this book to interact in a meaningful way with the anatomical histology of the rheumatic diseases. It is not easy for any single investigator to paint the picture of a disease process, from its clinical description to its mechanisms, and then to a defined hypothesis, and finally an understanding. Nonetheless, Fassbender has done this in a clear and convincing way that integrates our current knowledge of this group of dis eases. Scientific discovery in medicine moves from the bedside to the bench, back to the bedside, and then back to the bench, etc. It is this iterative process of new observation and new discovery that has given us the achievements in medicine over the past century.

Book Synopsis Clinical Trials in Rheumatology by : Ruediger Mueller
Download or read book Clinical Trials in Rheumatology written by Ruediger Mueller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 765 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A huge number of therapeutic studies has been published in rheumatology and clinical immunology. This number grows substantially by the year. As such, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep track of this multitude of studies and the ensuing therapeutic trends. Further to this, a particular study can be referred to in a variety of ways, either as a shortened version of the title or an acronym, adding to the confusion. The book Clinical Trials in Rheumatology provides a summary of the important studies in the field for easy reference. Every study is shown with name, acronym (if in existence), authors, complete citation, study design, results, and summary. An acronym finder is supplied at the beginning of the book. This book is a valuable reference tool for rheumatologists and other clinical specialties, as well as for research scientists interested in immunomodulatory and selected other drug therapies in rheumatologic diseases.

Book Synopsis Modern Paleopathology, The Study of Diagnostic Approach to Ancient Diseases, their Pathology and Epidemiology by : Bruce M. Rothschild
Download or read book Modern Paleopathology, The Study of Diagnostic Approach to Ancient Diseases, their Pathology and Epidemiology written by Bruce M. Rothschild and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-27 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of paleopathology has two very different constituencies, the medical scientist and the zoologist/paleontologist/anthropologist. Their investigative procedures and professional jargon are different, sometimes to the point of mutual incomprehensibility. Paleontologists/anthropologists/zoologists have a limited data base for the characterization and interpretation of pathology. This must come from the human and veterinary medical experience. What, beyond intellectual satisfaction, can the health care community expect from this relationship? The past history of the appearance and dispersal of infectious disease and cancer is of considerable theoretical importance and leads to new insights on the nature and transmission of diseases that are otherwise ambiguous. The discovery of rheumatoid arthritis in pre-Columbian North America exemplifies insights gained. The current effort delineates osseous impact of disease (as manifest in clinical populations diagnosed in life), representation in the zoologic, paleontologic and anthropologic record, and assessment techniques that can be confidently applied. The chapters form “columns” that provide the foundation for scientific critical thinking. The actual integration of the information is in its application. Our purpose is to provide a data base and atlas of actually documented skeletal impact of diseases (as population phenomenon), an initial data base of reported skeletal pathology, and a methodology for expanding this to new arenas. The first section of the book examines the scientific basis of paleopathology, its transition from speculation-based musings, resolution of misconceptions and the denouement of paleo-epidemiology. The second section provides holistic analysis of the gamut of pathology/diseases with significant skeletal impact, with a validated archeologic/zoological/paleontological record. The third section provides a glossary to resolve the semantic challenges inherent to interdisciplinary efforts. The fourth section provides an atlas of pathology representation in the fossil record. Ultimately, this book intends to present a scientifically-validated approach to recognition of disease in the archeological, zoological and paleontological record, superseding previous speculation-based offerings.
