Book excerpt: Claire Hatwell is a wife, a mother of four and an advocate for sober living, having fought a battle with alcohol addiction and won. Addiction comes in many forms, there isn't a stereotypical addict or a certain way into recovery, and what works for one person won't necessarily work for all. Claire shares her personal experiences to give hope to those in situations similar to the one she was in. Her intention is to show those in need that there is a way out of addiction, a way for families to understand those close to them, and a way to see light at the end of the tunnel. Claire says, if she can get sober, anyone can, "There were so many years when I wondered about my drinking, but people like me don't have problems like that... or do they? Sometimes it's hard to admit something to others, and harder still to admit it to yourself."Having written the popular blog My Not So Secret Diary for the past few years, this is Claire's first book, and the story of her recovery and my journey to a life of sobriety. Claire has been sober since 2016.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE • Winner of The New York Public Library’s Helen Bernstein Book Award • “A new classic of science reporting.”—The New York Times The riveting true story of a small town ravaged by industrial pollution, Toms River melds hard-hitting investigative reporting, a fascinating scientific detective story, and an unforgettable cast of characters into a sweeping narrative in the tradition of A Civil Action, The Emperor of All Maladies, and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. One of New Jersey’s seemingly innumerable quiet seaside towns, Toms River became the unlikely setting for a decades-long drama that culminated in 2001 with one of the largest legal settlements in the annals of toxic dumping. A town that would rather have been known for its Little League World Series champions ended up making history for an entirely different reason: a notorious cluster of childhood cancers scientifically linked to local air and water pollution. For years, large chemical companies had been using Toms River as their private dumping ground, burying tens of thousands of leaky drums in open pits and discharging billions of gallons of acid-laced wastewater into the town’s namesake river. In an astonishing feat of investigative reporting, prize-winning journalist Dan Fagin recounts the sixty-year saga of rampant pollution and inadequate oversight that made Toms River a cautionary example for fast-growing industrial towns from South Jersey to South China. He tells the stories of the pioneering scientists and physicians who first identified pollutants as a cause of cancer, and brings to life the everyday heroes in Toms River who struggled for justice: a young boy whose cherubic smile belied the fast-growing tumors that had decimated his body from birth; a nurse who fought to bring the alarming incidence of childhood cancers to the attention of authorities who didn’t want to listen; and a mother whose love for her stricken child transformed her into a tenacious advocate for change. A gripping human drama rooted in a centuries-old scientific quest, Toms River is a tale of dumpers at midnight and deceptions in broad daylight, of corporate avarice and government neglect, and of a few brave individuals who refused to keep silent until the truth was exposed. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR AND KIRKUS REVIEWS “A thrilling journey full of twists and turns, Toms River is essential reading for our times. Dan Fagin handles topics of great complexity with the dexterity of a scholar, the honesty of a journalist, and the dramatic skill of a novelist.”—Siddhartha Mukherjee, M.D., author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning The Emperor of All Maladies “A complex tale of powerful industry, local politics, water rights, epidemiology, public health and cancer in a gripping, page-turning environmental thriller.”—NPR “Unstoppable reading.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer “Meticulously researched and compellingly recounted . . . It’s every bit as important—and as well-written—as A Civil Action and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.”—The Star-Ledger “Fascinating . . . a gripping environmental thriller.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “An honest, thoroughly researched, intelligently written book.”—Slate “[A] hard-hitting account . . . a triumph.”—Nature “Absorbing and thoughtful.”—USA Today

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The road to sobriety is hard, and I don't intend to sugar coat any part of it for you. In this book I will take it back to the beginning. My life was that of a hardcore weekend binge drinker, one blackout night after another. I welcome you into my rock bottom moments, my losing all control, and my putting my life back together, piece by piece. Sober as F*** is a personal memoir of my first two years of sobriety, but it is not only about becoming sober from alcohol. I was forced to face and accept many sobering realities about myself along the way when I put down the bottle. Everything in my life had to be broken down to nothing in order to rebuild it from the ground up. I would have to acknowledge my unhealthy relationships with men, come to terms with depression and anxiety, and to realize that I had been drowning all of my issues and emotions away, one swig of vodka at a time. In the beginning of my sobriety, I looked for support in many places. All of the books and stories I found never fit what mine looked like. So this one is for all the people out there with stories like mine, looking for reassurance that there can be a light at the end of the tunnel. I was so desperate to find that kind of reassurance during my journey, so I hope my story can be that for you. To the millennial weekend binger, to the young woman so desperate to feel love, to the one losing all hope that things can get better ... This one is for you.

Book excerpt: This book is a road map. It doesn't hold the 'secret short cut' to sobriety, because there are none, but it does sign-post you through the "getting sober" and guide you towards "living sober" (two very different things). This book is full of practical guidance for all the phases of the sober journey - what to do when your first pink cloud dissipates, how do you prepare for your first sober outing, why aren't your friends cheering you on? What's up with that? And when do you actually get to BE sober? And is there life beyond this journey - in the scary new non-drinking world? This book acknowledges that this journey is dual purpose - to ditch the booze and find oneself - and the power and success of recovery comes when you can use sobriety as a tool in your life, rather than a destination.Everybody has a unique sober journey - but everyone's path goes in the same direction. This book will help you get there, hopefully without too many detours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At birth, I was brought home in a limousine. I was born into affluence, an influential family and a promising future. At age thirteen, I had my first drink. My high school years were full of fun, friends, success in athletics and respect. I drank. In my twenties and thirties, I owned an advertising agency, a catering business, a used car dealership, acquired my pilot's license, a thirty foot Winnebago, sail boats, a home, a wife, and three kids. I drank more. In my forties, I lost my advertising business, my catering business, my car business, my pilot's license, my driver's license and got my first DUI. I drank more even after admitting I was an alcoholic. My early fifties found me becoming general manager and Vice President of a multi-million dollar manufacturing company. My drinking increased from alcoholism to addiction. At age fifty-five I was cuffed and shackled in a caged bus to two years in prison with a felony 5 DUI record. My wife filed for divorce, I lost my job and lost my financial security through bad investments and legal fees. I found the exit off this road to destruction. At fifty-seven I am happy, spiritual, sober, believing in myself again and blessed with the return of my family, my home and my dreams. Get in and ride with me on my journey to sobriety and salvation.
