Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent debates on migration have demonstrated the important role of concepts in academic and political discourse. The contributions to this collection revisit established analytical categories in the study of migration such as border regimes, orders of belonging, coloniality, translation, trans/national digital culture and memory. Exploring notions, images and realities of migration in their cultural framings, this volume sheds light on the powerful work of these concepts. Including perspectives on migration from history, visual studies, pedagogy, literary and cultural studies, cultural anthropology and sociology, it explores the complex scholarly and popular notions of migration with particular focus on their often unspoken assumptions and political implications. Revisiting established analytical tools in the study of migration, the interdisciplinary contributions explore new approaches and point to the importance of conceptual nuance extending beyond academic discourse.

Und wie reagieren sie auf unerwünschte Transnationalisierungsfolgen?
Book Synopsis Transforming Gendered Well-Being in Europe by : Mercè Renom
Download or read book Transforming Gendered Well-Being in Europe written by Mercè Renom and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European social movements improve the well-being of men and women but need further analysis through a gender-sensitive lens. Taking an international and cross-disciplinary perspective, this book examines the impact of European social movements on gendered political and material well-being. Insights from history, politics, sociology and gender studies help identify how social movements have been instrumental in changing individual well-being through participation and empowerment. These movements have contributed to collective well-being thanks to victories in health, sexualities, political recognition and access to material goods. The contributions pay particular attention to the role of women activists in social movements varying from unions and religious movements to the women's movement itself. The settings range from 19th century Catalonia to Switzerland and Poland, including studies on European transnational movements today and their impact on global gendered well-being. The authors consider how gender has been important in defining the goals, strategies and outcomes of social movements. Thanks to the international spread of contributions a comparative record can be examined. Together the authors provide unique and concrete illustrations of the role of collective action and the participatory process on transforming women and well-being in European societies. The book provides essential insights for students and scholars working on social and women's movements, European well-being and welfare, and transnational action.

Book Synopsis Living Diversity – Shaping Society by : Bertelsmann Stiftung
Download or read book Living Diversity – Shaping Society written by Bertelsmann Stiftung and published by Verlag Bertelsmann Stiftung. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious, cultural and linguistic diversity has always been a reality in Germany. Yet determining what constitutes success in terms of dealing with diversity on a day-to-day basis is a matter often subject to debate. Demonstrating respect for each other while living together in diversity must be cultivated but also involve the active participation of everyone affected. We experience diversity every day in our communities: in our neighborhoods, schools, at work and in our free time. The "Living Diversity - Shaping Society" publication accompanying the Reinhard Mohn Prize 2018 offers insight into how Germany can effectively target living well together in a multicultural society marked by social inclusion and respect for diversity. It analyzes current approaches in Germany, examines good practices found in other countries and recommends actions that can be taken to cultivate a positive experience with diversity. Contributions by distinguished authors such as Armin Nassehi, Doug Saunders and Bart Somers explore the issue from various viewpoints.
Book Synopsis Fragmented Fatherland by : Alexander Clarkson
Download or read book Fragmented Fatherland written by Alexander Clarkson and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1945 to 1980 marks an extensive period of mass migration of students, refugees, ex-soldiers, and workers from an extraordinarily wide range of countries to West Germany. Turkish, Kurdish, and Italian groups have been studied extensively, and while this book uses these groups as points of comparison, it focuses on ethnic communities of varying social structures—from Spain, Iran, Ukraine, Greece, Croatia, and Algeria—and examines the interaction between immigrant networks and West German state institutions as well as the ways in which patterns of cooperation and conflict differ. This study demonstrates how the social consequences of mass immigration became intertwined with the ideological battles of Cold War Germany and how the political life and popular movements within these immigrant communities played a crucial role in shaping West German society.
Book Synopsis Politicizing Islam in Austria by : Farid Hafez
Download or read book Politicizing Islam in Austria written by Farid Hafez and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among its Continental peers, Austria has stood out for its longstanding state recognition of the Muslim community as early as 1912. A shift has occurred more recently, however, as populist far-right voices within the Austrian government have redirected public discourse and put into question Islam’s previously accepted autonomous status within the country. Politicizing Islam in Austria examines this anti-Muslim swerve in Austrian politics through a comprehensive analysis of government policies and regulations, as well as party and public discourses. In their innovative study, Hafez and Heinisch show how the far-right Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) adapted anti-Muslim discourse to their political purposes and how that discourse was then appropriated by the conservative center-right Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP). This reconfiguration of the political landscape prepared the way for a right-wing coalition government between conservatives and far-right actors that would subsequently institutionalize anti-Muslim political demands and change the shape of the civic conditions and public perceptions of Islam and the Muslim community in the republic.

Book Synopsis Becoming Multicultural by : Triadafilos Triadafilopoulos
Download or read book Becoming Multicultural written by Triadafilos Triadafilopoulos and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2012-04-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world of nation-states, international migration raises questions of membership: Should foreigners be admitted to the national space? And should they and their children be granted citizenship? Canada and Germany’s responses to these questions during the first half of the twentieth century consisted of discriminatory immigration and citizenship policies aimed at harnessing migration for economic ends while minimizing its costs. Yet, by the end of the century, the admission, settlement, and incorporation of previously excluded groups had transformed both countries into highly diverse multicultural societies. Becoming Multicultural explains how this remarkable shift came about. Triadafilopoulos argues that dramatic changes in global norms after the Second World War made the maintenance of established membership regimes difficult to defend, opening the way for the liberalization of immigration and citizenship policies. It is a thought-provoking analysis that sheds light on the dynamics of membership politics and policy making in contemporary liberal-democratic countries.
Book Synopsis The Color of Desire by : Christopher Ewing
Download or read book The Color of Desire written by Christopher Ewing and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Color of Desire tells the story of how, in the aftermath of gay liberation, race played a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of queer, German politics. Focusing on the Federal Republic of Germany, Christopher Ewing charts both the entrenchment of racisms within white, queer scenes and the formation of new, antiracist movements that contested overlapping marginalizations. Far from being discrete political trajectories, racist and antiracist politics were closely connected, as activists worked across groups to develop their visions for queer politics. Ewing describes not only how AIDS workers, gay tourists, white lesbians, queer immigrants, and Black feminists were connected in unexpected ways but also how they developed contradictory concerns that comprised the full landscape of queer politics. Out of these connections, which often exceeded the bounds of the Federal Republic, arose new forms of queer fascism as well as their multiple, antiracist contestations. Both unsettled the appeals to national belonging, or "homonationalism," on which many white queer activists based their claims. Thus, the story of the making of homonationalism is also the story of its unmaking. The Color of Desire explains how the importance of racism to queer politics cannot—and should not—be understood without also attending to antiracism. Actors worked across different groups, making it difficult to chart separable political trajectories. At the same time, antiracist activists also used the fractures and openings in groups that were heavily invested in the logics of whiteness to formulate new, antiracist organizations and, albeit in constrained ways, shifted queer politics more generally.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of European Islam by : Jocelyne Cesari
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of European Islam written by Jocelyne Cesari and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, Muslim countries and Europe have engaged one another through theological dialogues, diplomatic missions, political rivalries, and power struggles. In the last thirty years, due in large part to globalization and migration from Islamic countries to the West, what was previously an engagement across national and cultural boundaries has increasingly become an internalized encounter within Europe itself. Questions of the Hijab in schools, freedom of expression in the wake of the Danish Cartoon crisis, and the role of Shari'a have come to the forefront of contemporary European discourse. The Oxford Handbook of European Islam is the first collection to present a comprehensive approach to the multiple and changing ways Islam has been studied across European countries. Parts one to three address the state of knowledge of Islam and Muslims within a selection of European countries, while presenting a critical view of the most up-to-date data specific to each country. These chapters analyze the immigration cycles and policies related to the presence of Muslims, tackling issues such as discrimination, post-colonial identity, adaptation, and assimilation. The thematic chapters, in parts four and five, examine secularism, radicalization, Shari'a, Hijab, and Islamophobia with the goal of synthesizing different national discussion into a more comparative theoretical framework. The Handbook attempts to balance cutting edge assessment with the knowledge that the content itself will eventually be superseded by events. Featuring eighteen newly-commissioned essays by noted scholars in the field, this volume will provide an excellent resource for students and scholars interested in European Studies, immigration, Islamic studies, and the sociology of religion.
