Book Synopsis Schumpeter’s General Theory of Capitalism by : Tristan Velardo
Download or read book Schumpeter’s General Theory of Capitalism written by Tristan Velardo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-24 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph A. Schumpeter made multiple contributions to economic science and beyond. Drawing on this wide range of writings, this book argues that Schumpeter provided a theoretical account of capitalism as a total phenomenon. It methodically reconstructs the “general theory” of capitalism present in Schumpeter's work and shows its consistency and limits. The book identifies three key dimensions of a Schumpeterian general theory of capitalism. First, capitalism is defined at its core as a form or method of economic change: the entrepreneur disrupts a static, equilibrium economy (which is the foundation of all economic activities) with the introduction of an innovation. He is an unbalancing and disruptive force. Second, capitalism is defined as an institutional order composed of private property, private initiative for private profit and credit. Finally, capitalism is defined as a "civilization" or culture: a set of values, attitudes, and beliefs. The general theory thus accounts for capitalism as an economic form (innovation and entrepreneurship) which is the source of economic change; supported and enabled by a particular institutional order without which innovation would remain a dead letter (private property, private profit, and credit); all this generates the culture of capitalism. This book will be of interest to readers in the history of economic thought, economic theory, innovation, political economy, and social theory.

This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the sheer complexity of the SSM’s institutional design adopting an comprehensive approach to banking supervision. At its core, this work examines the tangible mechanisms of prudential regulation or supervision both at the European and national levels, offering a comparative analysis of ten national systems. Reflecting the results of an intensive, four-year research project that saw the collaboration of academics and practitioners, it addresses two interrelated issues. It investigates the efficacy of the shared national- and EU-level enforcement system the EU introduced in reaction to the financial and banking crisis.Secondly, it scrutinizes the role that criminal law can play in sanctioning the breaches to banking regulation.

Book Synopsis Macro-Prudential Policies to Mitigate Financial System Vulnerabilities by : Mr.Stijn Claessens

This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macro-prudential policies aimed at mitigating systemic financial risks have become part of the policy toolkit in many emerging markets and some advanced countries. Their effectiveness and efficacy are not well-known, however. Using panel data regressions, we analyze how changes in balance sheets of some 2,800 banks in 48 countries over 2000–2010 respond to specific macro-prudential policies. Controlling for endogeneity, we find that measures aimed at borrowers––caps on debt-to-income and loan-to-value ratios––and at financial institutions––limits on credit growth and foreign currency lending––are effective in reducing asset growth. Countercyclical buffers are little effective through the cycle, and some measures are even counterproductive during downswings, serving to aggravate declines, consistent with the ex-ante nature of macro-prudential tools.
Book Synopsis Macroprudential Policy by : International Monetary Fund
Download or read book Macroprudential Policy written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides the most comprehensive empirical study of the effectiveness of macroprudential instruments to date. Using data from 49 countries, the paper evaluates the effectiveness of macroprudential instruments in reducing systemic risk over time and across institutions and markets. The analysis suggests that many of the most frequently used instruments are effective in reducing pro-cyclicality and the effectiveness is sensitive to the type of shock facing the financial sector. Based on these findings, the paper identifies conditions under which macroprudential policy is most likely to be effective, as well as conditions under which it may have little impact.
Book Synopsis Dealing with the New Giants by : Tito Boeri
Download or read book Dealing with the New Giants written by Tito Boeri and published by Centre for Economic Policy Research. This book was released on 2006 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pension funds are becoming the largest institutional investors in global financial markets. They help individuals save for their old age and protect the value of their pensions. In so far as they improve risk sharing along time and across individuals, pension funds may also support innovation and growth in the economy. However, pension funds operate in an environment characterised by a number of serious market imperfections (poor financial education of investors and managers, informational asymmetries in the delegation of saving and portfolio management decisions, imperfect labour markets, and potential supply versus demand imbalances in financial markets). This eighth ICMB/CEPR Geneva Report on the World Economy takes a stance on a number of controversial issues concerning the future of pension funds."

Book Synopsis Twenty Years of Inflation Targeting by : David Cobham
Download or read book Twenty Years of Inflation Targeting written by David Cobham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-16 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is now a remarkably strong consensus among academics and professional economists that central banks should adopt explicit inflation targets and that all key monetary policy decisions, especially those concerning interest rates, should be made with a view to ensuring that these targets are achieved. This book provides a comprehensive review of the experience of inflation targeting since its introduction in New Zealand in 1989 and looks in detail at what we can learn from the past twenty years and what challenges we may face in the future. Written by a distinguished team of academics and professional economists from central banks around the world, the book covers a wide range of issues including many that have arisen as a result of the recent financial crisis. It should be read by anyone concerned with better understanding inflation targeting and its past, present and future role within monetary policy.

Book Synopsis Spoils of Truce by : Reinoud Leenders
Download or read book Spoils of Truce written by Reinoud Leenders and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Spoils of Truce, Reinoud Leenders documents the extensive corruption that accompanied the reconstruction of Lebanon after the end of a decade and a half of civil war. With the signing of the Ta’if peace accord in 1989, the rebuilding of the country’s shattered physical infrastructure and the establishment of a functioning state apparatus became critical demands. Despite the urgent needs of its citizens, however, graft was rampant. Leenders describes the extent and nature of this corruption in key sectors of the Lebanese economy and government, including transportation, health care, energy, natural resources, construction, and social assistance programs. Exploring in detail how corruption implicated senior policymakers and high-ranking public servants, Leenders offers a clear-eyed perspective on state institutions in the developing world. He also addresses the overriding role of the Syrian leadership’s interests in Lebanon and in particular its manipulation of the country’s internal differences. His qualitative and disaggregated approach to dissecting the politics of creating and reshaping state institutions complements the more typical quantitative methods used in the study of corruption. More broadly, Spoils of Truce will be uncomfortable reading for those who insist that power-sharing strategies in conflict management and resolution provide some sort of panacea for divided societies hoping to recover from armed conflict.
