Book Synopsis Residential Intensification Case Studies by : Ray Tomalty

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last 50 years, development patterns in Canada have emphasized building out onto greenfield lands at the urban edge at a rate that has outstripped the rate of population growth. This development pattern has resulted in the loss of farmland and natural areas, rising car dependency and traffic congestion. Moreover, many municipalities lack the resources to pay for the infrastructure needed to support expansion into greenfield areas. One of the ways municipalities have sought to address these issues is through residential intensification, i.e., encouraging housing development in existing urban areas where infrastructure and transit services are already in place. Infill development, adaptive reuse, brownfield development, lot splitting and secondary suites are examples of intensification that can result in the following: Ÿ Reduce infrastructure costs; Ÿ Use land more efficiently; Ÿ Preserve rural and natural areas outside existing urban boundaries; Ÿ Revitalize urban areas in decline; and Ÿ Create more transportation choice through easier access to daily destinations like work, shopping and entertainment (e.g., mixed-use, pedestrian- and transit-oriented neighbourhoods). Despite the considerable potential benefits, intensification faces a series of practical challenges: Ÿ Higher development costs; Ÿ Neighbourhood opposition; Ÿ Regulatory issues. This study aims to profile successful examples of municipal initiatives that have helped to overcome obstacles such as these, either by removing barriers or providing positive incentives. Most importantly, they have resulted in concrete results "on the ground, " in that they have helped trigger or facilitate projects that may not have otherwise gone ahead. The report profiles 12 case studies of local initiatives that support intensification. This document is intended to be of use to municipal officials and other stakeholders across the country who may be looking for mechanisms with which to encourage intensification.

Download or read book Environmental Analysis of Contaminated Sites written by Geoffrey I. Sunahara and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2002-03-12 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Removing Barriers by : Delcan Corporation
Download or read book Removing Barriers written by Delcan Corporation and published by National Round Table. This book was released on 1997 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to provide suggestions and to identify future research that would assist in removing or relaxing barriers to the development of housing on contaminated sites. The first chapter provides an overview of the topic of contaminated sites and housing. Chapter 2 reviews the process for approving land development, including options for site assessment, remediation, and contaminant management. Chapter 3 explores Canadian legislation, and accompanying policies and guidelines, that apply when developing contaminated sites for housing. It also reviews progress on implementation of the 13 principles prepared by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. Chapter 4 discusses issues that may act as barriers to the development of housing on contaminated sites, such as regulations, liability, and availability of suitable remediation technologies. Chapter 5 presents some best practices that should help to remove those barriers, along with initiatives that can be undertaken to pursue those practices. Appendices include case studies and reviews of applicable legislation.

Book Synopsis Extractive Industry and the Sustainability of Canada's Arctic Communities by : Chris Southcott
Download or read book Extractive Industry and the Sustainability of Canada's Arctic Communities written by Chris Southcott and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern treaties, increased self-government, new environmental assessment rules, co-management bodies, and increased recognition and respect of Indigenous rights make it possible for northern communities to exert some control over extractive industries. Whether these industries can increase the well-being and sustainability of Canada’s Arctic communities, however, is still open to question. Extractive Industry and the Sustainability of Canada’s Arctic Communities delves into the final research findings of the Resources and Sustainable Development in the Arctic project which attempted to determine what was required for extractive industry to benefit northern communities. Drawing on case studies, this book explores how northern communities can capture and distribute a fairer share of financial benefits, how they can use extractive activities for business development, the problems and possibilities of employment and training opportunities, and the impacts on gender relations. It also considers fly-in fly-out work patterns, subsistence activities, housing, post-mine clean-up activities, waste management, and ways of monitoring positive and negative impacts. While extractive industries could potentially help improve the sustainability of Canada’s Arctic, many issues stand in the way, most notably power imbalances that limit the ability of Indigenous Peoples to equitably participate in their governance. Extractive Industry and the Sustainability of Canada’s Arctic Communities emphasizes the general need to determine how new institutions and processes, which are largely imported from the south, can be adapted to allow for a more authentic participation from the Indigenous Peoples of Canada’s Arctic.
