Der Autor untersucht, inwieweit deren Berichterstattung über Politiker, politische Parteien, Institutionen und Ereignisse Politikverdrossenheit fördert oder entgegenwirkt. Die Politikberichterstattung der Massenmedien beschränkt sich zumeist nicht auf die neutrale Überlieferung von Fakten. Massenmedien verkürzen die Realität, weil sie sie nicht vollständig abbilden können. Wenn Massenmedien das politische Geschehen ungefiltert wiedergeben würden, müsste die politische Berichterstattung aller Medien weitgehnd identisch sein, was in einem ausdifferenzierten Mediensystem wie dem von Deutschland vermutlich jedoch nicht der Fall ist. Wenn unterschiedliche Medien über identische Ereignisse unterschiedlich berichten, können die dargestellten Ereignisse nicht als einzige Ursache möglicher Folgen der Berichterstattung betrachtet werden. Als weitere Ursache muss die Art der Darstellung betrachtet werden. Wenn sich die Medien in ihrer Politikdarstellung unterscheiden, kann man vermuten, dass sich die Rezipienten je nach Mediennutzung in ihren Urteilen über Politik unterscheiden. Der Einfluss der Massenmedien auf die Rezipientenurteile über Politik wurde deshalb zuletzt häufig untersucht. Soche Momentaufnahmen können allerdings nur Aufschluss über den Zusammenhang zwischen der Mediennutzung und den Rezipientenurteilen über Politik geben. Um untersuchen zu können, ob die Rezipientenurteile tatsächlich eine Folge der Medienberichterstattung sind, müssen sowohl die individuellen Veränderungen der Politikdarstellung einzelner Medien als auch die individuellen Veränderungen der Mediennutzung und der politischen Urteile einzelner Repzipienten über einen längeren Zeitraum erfasst werden. Diese Forschungslücke wird mit der voliegenden Publikation geschlossen.

Die Politik vollzieht sich jedoch für die meisten Bürger außerhalb ihrer persönlichen Erfahrungsgrenzen. Den unmittelbaren Kontakt durch Parteimitgliedschaften oder andere Wege der politischen Partizipation beschreitet lediglich ein prozentual kleiner Teil der Bevölkerung (vgl. Kepplinger 1998, S. 209 - S. 210). Daraus resultierend stammt "vieles, wenn nicht das meiste, was die Durchschnittsbürger einer komplexen Gesellschaft westlicher Prägung über die Politik erfahren, (..) aus den Medien" (Pöttker 1996, S. 59). Die Medien nehmen folglich eine Stellung als Binde glied zwischen Politik und Gesellschaft ein und dienen u.a. als politische Informationsquelle. An diesem Punkt setzt diese Hausarbeit an. Da die Medien durch ihre Berichterstattung zur Informationsbefriedigung der Gesellschaft in einem erheblichen Maße beitragen, leitet sich daraus eine interessante Fragestellung in Bezug auf die Politikverdrossenheit ab: Welchen Einfluss haben die Medien auf die Politikverdrossenheit? Die hohe Reichweite der Massenmedien und die ebenso starke Nutzung dieser Informationskanäle durch den Rezipienten, lässt zu der Vermutung kommen, dass dort eine Verbindung besteht. Viele Untersuchungen, die sich mit den Wirkungen der Medien auseinandergesetzt haben, lassen erkennen, dass den Medien bei der Beeinflussung der Gesellschaft eine erhebliche Stellung zugesprochen werden kann. Die Medienwirkung ist, entgegen früherer Annahmen, nicht zu unterschätzen (vgl. Meyn 1999, S. 295). It is based on national election surveys held in "old" and "new" democracies in Europe (Germany, Britain, Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Bulgaria), North and South America (the United States, Chile and Uruguay), and Asia (Hong Kong) between 1990 and 2004. It is methodologically innovative, notwithstanding the fact that its core concern with "political intermediation" (i.e., the flow of political information from parties and candidates to voters through the mass-communications media, membership in secondary associations, and direct, face-to-face contacts within interpersonal networks) was first introduced to the study of electoral behavior by Paul Lazarsfeld and his collaborators in the 1940s. In addition to reviving that long-neglected analytical framework, this book breaks new ground by systematically exploring the impact of socio-political values on electoral behavior. It also analyzes the role of political intermediation in forming basic attitudes towards democracy (which are crucial for the consolidation of new democracies), and, in turn, channeling those orientations into various forms of political behavior. Some of the findings presented in this volume are dramatic, and clearly reveal that these channels of information are among the most powerful factors influencing the development of political attitudes and partisan electoral behavior. So, too, are socio-political values in some countries (particularly the United States). This volume is the first book-length product of the now 18-country Comparative National Elections Project.
