Book excerpt: The Book Traces The Birth, Growth And Fulfilment Of The State People S Movement In The State Of Talcher Which Was One Among The Twenty-Six Princely States In Pre-Independent Orissa. The People Of The Princely States Were Subjected To A Dual Pressure; On One Hand By The Feudal Lord Directly And On The Other, The Colonial Authorities Indirectly Who Were There Behind The Local Ruler. Suppressed By The Feudal Lords Over Centuries Through The Collection Of Various Illegal Dues Like Rashad, Magan, Bethi, Bheti, Etc., The People, Towards The Closing Years Of Nineteenth Century, Raised Their Voice Of Protest In 1898 For The First Time. It Was Followed By Uprisings In 1908 And 1911.The Strengthening Of The National Movement In The Twenties Gave Impetus To Another Popular Upsurge In Talcher In 1922, Which Was Again Suppressed. The Indomitable Zeal Of Talcher People Again Came To The Forefront During The Second Of 1930 S When The All Orissa States Peoples Conference Met In 1937 And Gave An Organised And Coordinated Shape To The Prajamandal Movements. To Oppose The Royal Pressure The People Of Talcher Took Recourse To A Unique Hizrat (Mass Exodus) Movement In 1938 In Thousands To Neighbouring British Ruled Territory. It Attracted The Attention Of Not Only Gandhiji, But The British M.P. Ms. Agatha Harrison, Who Visited Their Camps. During The Quit India Movement In 1942, The British Fired Upon The People Of Talcher From Air, Which Is One Among Five Such Incidents In The History Of India. Ultimately The Popular Victory Was Ensured When The King Was Compelled To Sign The Merger Documents In December, 1947. This Bloody Straggle Of The People Of Talcher Remains A Saga Of Self Sacrifice And Dedication Against The Unholy Nexus Of Obsolete Feudal Absolutism And Imperialism.

Book excerpt: In this informative new book, Ravi Kalia continues his examination of the planning of Indian cities begun with his earlier study of Chandigarh. Here, Kalia makes systematic inquiries into the political circumstances that brought about modern Bhubaneswar, the capital of the state of Orissa, to reveal the historical and social circumstances that shaped the city. In this account, Kalia brilliantly shows the interplay of indigenous religious forces, regional loyalty, and Western secular ideas in the context of twentieth-century international architecture and planning movements. This book will prove invaluable to historians, architects, planners, sociologists, and scholars interested in India, as well as those interested in urban planning in developing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book brings to the reader a set of political and social narratives woven around people’s resistance against big dams, mining and industrial projects, in short, displacement and dispossession in Odisha, India. This saga of dispossession abounds with stories and narratives of ordinary peasants, forest dwellers, fisher folk and landless wage laborers, which make the canvas of resistance history more complete. The book foregrounds these protagonists and the events that marked their lives; they live in the coastal plains as well as the hilly and forested areas of south and south-west Odisha. The authors have chronicled the development trajectory from the construction of the Hirakud Dam in the 1950s to the entry of corporations like POSCO and Vedanta in contemporary times. It thus covers extensive ground in interrogating the nature of industrialization being ushered into the state from post-independent India till today. The book depicts how and why people resist the development juggernaut in a state marked with endemic poverty. In unraveling this complex reality, the book conveys the world view of a vast section of people whose lives and livelihoods are tied up to land, forests, mountains, seas, rivers, lakes, ponds, trees, vines and bushes. These narratives fill a yawning gap in resistance literature in the context of Odisha. In doing so, they resonate with the current predicament of people in other mineral-rich states in Eastern India. The book is an endeavour to bring Odisha on the map of resistance politics and social movements in India and across the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: The work provides a readable analysis of the economy of British Orissa, Princely Orissa and hill tribes of Orissa. The impact of colonial economy combined with the consequences of fragmentation of Oriya-speaking areas brought about colossal change in the material condition of the people of Orissa. The poverty and starvation had taken root among the common mass of Orissa while a select class lived a parasitic life in abundance of wealth, thriving easy on the cheaply available labour and the back-breaking toil of the farmers and artisans. The crux of the problem was that indigenous economic system remained nearly intact, though stagnant and ossified, scarcely able to release more wealth to meet the growing demands. Even today any excursion to an Orissan village, unless modernised under the Five Year Plans, reveal to an observer that traditional economy in its structure in the system that supports the land-based people, however inadequately. This was the root cause of extreme economic backwardness of colonial Orissa. This work will provide some insight into the operation of a vital system in regional economy so that defects that still continue to plague it may be remedied towards a healthy regeneration of this system.
