Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2003, this volume studies village politics and the changes brought about in rural society through political developments. It focuses on the social, political and cultural circumstances of communist mobilization in rural West Bengal. It analyses the emergence of rural communism in the local context of changes in the position of women, in caste practices, in economic conditions and in new efforts to create ‘development’. It investigates how this cultural change interacts with the mechanisms and tools of village politics, and using anthropological methods and oral history as tools, allows for a detailed and intimate ethnographic description of village politics and its changes.
Book Synopsis Rank and Rivalry by : Marvin G. Davis
Download or read book Rank and Rivalry written by Marvin G. Davis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983-03-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropological enquiry is best done by attending equally to both social and cultural material. This is the view propounded here by Marvin Davis, who uses such an holistic approach to develop an original perspective on hierarchy and politics in rural Bengal. In the first part of the book, Professor Davis describes the indigenous theory of rank held by Hindus in rural West Bengal and shows that the premise of inequality is a central organising principle of their entire society and cosmos. In the second part, he shows that the Bengali preoccupation with rank generates frequent political rivalries at each level of rural social organisation. His book will interest all anthropologists and other social scientists concerned with the social and political organization of rural India. In addition, his explication of the links between ideology and social structure, often viewed in isolation from each other, makes the book an important contribution to anthropological theory and method.

Book excerpt: This volume offers for the first time a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the making and maintenance of a modern caste society in colonial and postcolonial West Bengal in India. Drawing on cutting-edge multidisciplinary scholarship, it explains why caste continues to be neglected in the politics of and scholarship on West Bengal, and how caste relations have permeated the politics of the region until today. The essays presented here dispel the myth that caste does not matter in Bengali society and politics, and make possible meaningful comparisons and contrasts with other regions in South Asia. The work will interest scholars and researchers in sociology, social anthropology, politics, modern Indian history and cultural studies.

Book Synopsis Development, Devolution and Democracy by : G K Lieten
Download or read book Development, Devolution and Democracy written by G K Lieten and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 1997-02-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the longest surviving, democratically elected communist regime in the world, the Left Front government in West Bengal has drawn considerable attention. Development, Devolution, and Democracy critically examines the achievements of the government in the areas of land reforms, rural development, devolution of administration to the grass-roots level, and above all in ensuring the democratic participation of the poorest classes. Basing his study on primary field research, author G. K. Lieten analyzes the differing composition of village councils in terms of caste, class, gender, and the ability of the panchayats to mediate between an interventionist state and the goal of grass-roots empowerment. Lieten observes that political maturity and acumen, embodied in class-based organizations, has played a key role in assisting development initiatives to percolate through to the villages. The study also shows how the West Bengal government has not only assisted agrarian development but has done so with a strong pro-poor orientation. With the current emphasis on decentralized and grass-roots-level governance, this detailed and useful case study will interest administrators, politicians, economists, planners, sociologists, and political scientists as well as professionals and researchers in rural development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, industrialization and urbanization are leading to improvement in society's economic condition which is often accompanied by lifestyle changes including physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and harmful use of tobacco and alcohol. These altered lifestyles bring about non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like obesity, hypertension (HTN) and diabetes mellitus (DM). The risk factors of the lifestyle induced NCDs are measurable and largely modifiable. So, continuous surveillance on the levels and patterns of risk factors is of fundamental importance to control NCDs. Chapter 1 focuses on this and conducted a study on 1216 male individuals of different socio-economic status residing at Kolkata, West Bengal. The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was initiated in India in 2006 with a view to creating more wage employment in rural areas thereby ameliorating rural poverty. But after the completion of more than a decade, the effects and roles of the scheme are found to be manifolds. Particularly, if we consider the impact of women. Chapter 2 looks at how the role of women have changed, especially in the family, and how that impacts society. In chapter 3, the authors performed a study to assess age trends in anthropometric measures and nutritional status among adult Mahali females. It was a community-based cross-sectional study, carried out in selected four villages of Bankura district, West Bengal, India.
